Earthday is fight day

If your “green” project relies on the same practices of land theft, resource extraction, and labor abuse that brought us to this point - then the grifters supporting it are just another variety of climate change deniers. Squat the trees while we still got trees. Defend what you love.

Please stop saying “Every country ever has persecuted Jews and kicked them out.” It is so ahistorical. Jewish people have had different statuses in different societies throughout different parts of history. These different statuses were made possible through certain conditions. Also, by saying this you’re concluding that antisemitism is inevitable instead of a phenomenon brought on by specific conditions that can be fought against and destroyed.

It really is patently false. Georgian Jews and Mountain Jews lived in relative harmony until the Russian Empire invaded. Cochin and Madras Jews in what is now India also coexisted in relative peace. Antisemitism has always existed for specific purposes- almost always to provide for a scapegoat to distract from the actual depradations of the ruling class.

Have u heard about the flotillas departing now/soon for palestine

yes!!! i think everyone should learn about the freedom flotilla, which is setting sail for gaza very soon and needs to have eyes and ears on it, as israel has a long history of attacking, raiding and occaisonally killing humanitarian workers on aid ships to gaza, as they did in 2010 with the first freedom flotilla (because that's how long Gaza has been under siege)

here's an interview with journalist and lawyer dylan saba, who is setting sail on it and is a good person to follow to learn more about it:

and this is their website:

remember to follow and check #freedomflotilla on twitter in the coming days.

never wear a bra if you can help it do not let them win

actually so depressing to me how the only people i see on this post talking about never wearing bras are people with small boobs.. like don't get me wrong every nipple freed is a win in my book im happy for and proud of all of you but like.. as a fat girl with Not Small boobs i really wish more fat women were comfortable going braless or even saw it as an option for themselves :( ive been braless since 2020 and its one of the best changes I've made in my life like yeah some people will be assholes about it but i think its 100% been worth it.. i just wish fat women weren't so scared i wish so many of our lives weren't dictated by fear. they don't have to be. you can make the choice. people will get used to it. you will make other women feel safer and braver, feel like it's an option for them. you will develop a new confidence in your body and sense of freedom that really goes deeper than the physical relief from ditching your bra. if you have bigger breasts and want to stop wearing a bra, and youre in a position to do so without hurting yourself or being fired, please at least seriously consider it. try it out at the grocery store. most people don't care half as much as you think they will, and you might surprise yourself with your own bravery. im rooting for all of you.

so: masking: good, unequivocally. please mask and please educate others on why they should mask to make the world safer for immune compromised people to participate in.

however: masking is not my policy focus and it shouldn't be yours, either. masking is a very good mitigation against droplet-born illnesses and a slightly less effective (but still very good) mitigation against airborne illnesses, but its place in the pyramid of mitigation demands is pretty low, for several reasons:

  • it's an individual mitigation, not a systemic one. the best mitigations to make public life more accessible affect everyone without distributing the majority of the effort among individuals (who may not be able to comply, may not have access to education on how to comply, or may be actively malicious).
  • it's a post-hoc mitigation, or to put it another way, it's a band-aid over the underlying problem. even if it was possible to enforce, universal masking still wouldn't address the underlying problem that it is dangerous for sick people and immune compromised people to be in the same public locations to begin with. this is a solvable problem! we have created the societal conditions for this problem!

here are my policy focuses:

  • upgraded air filtration and ventilation systems for all public buildings. appropriate ventilation should be just as bog-standard as appropriately clean running water. an indoor venue without a ventilation system capable of performing 5 complete air changes per hour should be like encountering a public restroom without any sinks or hand sanitizer stations whatsoever.
  • enforced paid sick leave for all employees until 3-5 days without symptoms. the vast majority of respiratory and food-borne illnesses circulate through industry sectors where employees come into work while experiencing symptoms. a taco bell worker should never be making food while experiencing strep throat symptoms, even without a strep diagnosis.
  • enforced virtual schooling options for sick students. the other vast majority of respiratory and food-borne illnesses circulate through schools. the proximity of so many kids and teenagers together indoors (with little to no proper ventilation and high levels of physical activity) means that if even one person comes to school sick, hundreds will be infected in the following few days. those students will most likely infect their parents as well. allowing students to complete all readings and coursework through sites like blackboard or compass while sick will cut down massively on disease transmission.
  • accessible testing for everyone. not just for COVID; if there's a test for any contagious illness capable of being performed outside of lab conditions, there should be a regulated option for performing that test at home (similar to COVID rapid tests). if a test can only be performed under lab conditions, there should be a government-subsidized program to provide free of charge testing to anyone who needs it, through urgent cares and pharmacies.

the last thing to note is that these things stack; upgraded ventilation systems in all public buildings mean that students and employees get sick less often to begin with, making it less burdensome for students and employees to be absent due to sickness, and making it more likely that sick individuals will choose to stay home themselves (since it's not so costly for them).

masking is great! keep masking! please use masking as a rhetorical "this is what we can do as individuals to make public life safer while we're pushing for drastic policy changes," and don't get complacent in either direction--don't assume that masking is all you need to do or an acceptable forever-solution, and equally, don't fall prey to thinking that pushing for policy change "makes up" for not masking in public. it's not a game with scores and sides; masking is a material thing you can do to help the individual people you interact with one by one, and policy changes are what's going to make the entirety of public life safer for all immune compromised people.

Your parents are not "narcissists". They're typical authoritarian assholes who treat you like their property because society allows them to.

Your ex boyfriend is not a "narcissist". He's a typical misogynistic douchebag who treats women like shit because society allows him to.

Your boss is not a "narcissist". They're a typical classist dipshit who thinks workers' entire purpose in life is to generate profit because society allows them to.

And even if they happen to be a "narcissist", that's not what gave them the power to get away with abuse.

So stop blaming mental illness and start blaming society's normalization of abuse. Stop acting like someone has to have a mental illness in order to do something cruel when ordinary people have been doing atrocious things since forever.

Yakuza Heritage Post

Normally when you see a fandom heritage post it’s some shit from two weeks ago that nobody’s seen, but this video? This video is different. This 9-year-old video is literally what convinced me to get into the series. I would not know the epic highs and lows, the laughter and tears of Ryu Ga Gotoku if it weren’t for this video of Kiryu dramatically blogging about a grandma doing a flip.

legendary

there are QR code posters here in Melbourne for reporting graffiti to the council - and someone has been printing their own and carefully placing them over the official ones

they lead to a documentary on hip-hop/graffiti culture

it's perfect because the QR posters are uglier than any bit of street art

bell hooks mentioned going through a time in her life where she was severely depressed and suicidal and how the only way she got through it was through changing her environment: She surrounded her home with buddhas of all colors, Audre Lorde’s A Litany for Survival facing her as she wakes up, and filling the space she saw everyday with reinforcing objects and meaningful books. She asks herself each day, “What are you going to do today to resist domination?” I also really liked it when she said that in order to move from pain to power, it is crucial to engage in “an active rewriting of our lives.”

I have come to think of the suicidal impulse as the brain waving a flag to say three things:

  • something needs to change here
  • this is urgent
  • I don’t know how to do it

death is the ultimate metaphor for drastic change. it’s a general specific. whatever your problems are, it is very likely that dead people don’t have to deal with them. a real solution to your problems may demand a very narrow range of action that’s likely to be out of reach at this moment, but death is sold on every street corner, so it feels like a more realistic fantasy than happiness.

you don’t really want to die per se but it’s also not completely random chemicals swamping your brain for no reason. you want the pain to stop, you want to be somewhere else, you want to be someone else. it’s urgent. you don’t know how to do it. the end is not the end but a means that feels within your reach right now.

this is the wisdom of bell hooks: daily rituals of meaning and resistance and solidarity are part of slowly building a future where you can make the change you really need. and only alive people can do that. every step you take towards change and power is another step away from death.
