Black men are my brothers, father, family, friends, and colleagues. Black men are more than the hyper-sexualized and violent individuals portrayed by society. In this body of work, I seek to explore the vulnerability, power, and humanity of black masculinity. I want the viewer to become directly involved in the observed domestic environment of the subject. I do this by painting each man in an intimate relationship to his environment. The portraits reflect the variation within their spaces as an extension of the subject’s character, and so, I urge the audience to connect to the uniqueness of an individual instead of a social idea. Each subject has a mood, essence, and experience.

Equilibrating
50x50 inches
Inspired by an original vintage photograph of a man doing a handstand on the beach, Equilibrating combines paper collage, a painted target, photographic transfer, gold leaf, and an matte epoxy resin surface. My relocation from the Midwest to South Florida is the impetus for an ongoing series of artwork with a personal narrative of self-discovery. The subsequent body of work serves as a enigmatic visual diary of artistic development and speaks to the power of transformation through translocation. Uprooting one’s life for a new and unfamiliar destination should be considered one of the great feats of strength in this world. I equate this undertaking with the exertion of a handstand; an acrobatic action that takes courage, determination, balance and at any moment can come crashing down. The piece is a reminder that advancing from point A to point B can be a defining journey full of ‘handstand’ moments in which we attempt daring acts and find either harmony, instability or both.
