“you talk like a smart/pretentious person” actually I just forget simple words constantly and am forced to rummage through my brain for the nearest synonym, which is usually twice as long and needlessly specific

The school library was a great refuge, and I used to read old books there with a dictionary by my side. Looked up everything unfamiliar. Missed out on adequate socialization to solidify my vocabulary like a normal person.

To be fair, I also got yelled at as a young teen for reading Dostoeyevski because it had ‘big words’ in it - so there was no way that I’d miss out on learning every big ass word I could. Because rebelling against anti-intellectual bigots gets weird sometimes.
