Downtown||Event:Bad Blood

Her bottles were running low, Melanie noticed as she opened her bag. The foul smell of gasoline has stopped bothering her as she took one, lighter on her left hand as she lighted the soaked rag half hanging on the opening of the bottle. The flames flickering around her gloves hand threatened to go up to her arms, but Meanie ignored the danger as she throws the Molotov cocktail.

The Molotov crashed on their legs, the fire spreading into the ranks on the hunters as she ran. She could almost feel her skin moving, the burnt splotches becoming new skin. The civilian runs around the chaos towards a shop she had taken as a refuge and stock. Hiding before an empty counter, stilling when she hears footsteps entering the empty shop. Slowly, quietly, she reaches to bring out a knife of her boot, tensing in case she needs to attacks.

“Bars in the area?” She questions wondering just which one the other is mentioning to her inside of the place. “Would you take me there or are you too busy?” Another question popping out from the beta’s mouth wondering just how much she could pry out of the girl.

“Well...” Melanie did consider it, she had her shop to open, but at the same time this time in the week, it was usually very slow for sales.  “I could take to a few, but I couldn’t stay too long, I do have the shop to tend tomorros.” She gives the blonde a small smile.

“ — It’s a great community— I love it! Black isn’t a very efficient colour. Your AC bill must be crazy during summer. That’s sad to hear— I’m sorry people are treating you like that.
image
                                  “ — I understand.

“It’s a great community, but everything has an ugly side. And don’t be sorry, I’m happy with my choices.”

“How about, do you see yourself with Mrs or Mr, raising the little ones?”

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear you were flirting with me, and not just playing to a customer.” He smirked. “Well, I should go. See you once I get cleaned up unless you happen to follow me home.”

“I can do both Olivier, I am a very versatile woman.” And of course, it never hurt o keep the captain on her good side, watching her back. “You know I don’t outside work unless entice to too. But I’ll be seeing you later.”

“What a day, honestly is there anything at all fulfilling to do? I’ve just been round the block and my gosh the city seems even more dead than I have initially  thought.”“ Complained Lavina not really bothering checking where she was headed. All she want is some fun and someone to give it to her. However it seems like the whole place has been kept in the dark since the last time she stepped out of her own home. “Well is there anyone even out here?”
image
“Mid-week is not usually the moment for the party, but I heard some of the bars are mo lively as the night comes.” Melanie offers her a weak smile, as she looks for her keys in her purse. She had taken lunch and was coming back for her night shift.

Theus frowns, because he doesn’t understand how people can think that of editing.
“ — You edit books— what’s unorthodox about that? It’s not a 9 to 5 job, but it’s not unusual. I’m just glad for you that you like it.
image
                               ” — You want children?

“We live in a white picket fence community, I already get hounded just because I painted my house black.” Melanie knows fully knows the rumor and passive-aggressive words toward her.  “Not liking my career its just an easy jab at me.”

“Maybe, when I’m older  and ready to settle down.”

“Luck? Maybe. Or at least an incentive to keep winnning night after night.” Captain Bordeaux took another sip of his coffee as he saved the image. Melanie was being particularly cheeky today. “And you know me, I enjoy to utilize all options when I wish to achieve a goal of mine.”

“I do feel safer when I know you are out there, looking out for us poor civilians.” Melanie flutters her eyelashes for a second, watching as Olivier saves the image. “I know you are very resourceful if neede Olivier.”

“ — Mystery— like Agatha Christie? If you like what you’re doing, that’s all that matters, don’t you think?
Prometheus doesn’t know how far he is from the actual subject, and he’s not remotely close to making a connection either.

” — I hope to have kids one day, but it’s hard for me to imagine having them in Cape Covaire. I love the people here, but I’d feel guilty bringing a child to this world.

“A little like Agatha Christie, yes.” She won’t break the illusion for him, there was no need. “Indeed I do. Not many think well of my career choice, since its sort of unorthodox, but I enjoy it.”

“I can see why. There are many families but I think the same.”

“ — What’s your favourite genre? I’m curious - if you don’t me asking - but when you edit a book, do you really enjoy the story, or has it become so mechanical for you, that you don’t?
Theus doesn’t see the change in her gaze— romance novels aren’t really like real romance anyway. It’s usually more dramatic, and too perfect on the other end.

“ — First, and last mostly. I leave teens, and adults to others. And yes— they’re all very cute. There’s something magical about them.

“If I had to choose, why is admittedly hard, I would choose mystery books. It's nice to see how much I can gain before the conclusion comes.  And surprisingly no, I do get bored from time to time, but I enjoyed it. Books can be like people, different in their own little way.” It is a little funny to her how easily books can be a perfect stand-in for her clients.

“Magical yes, but I believe I rather see them. Not ready anytime soon to have a munchkin of my own.”

“Uh-uh. Melanie, you’re not in the condition to be saying hey to anyone except for your bed.” She’d send a text to Effy to let her know where she’d gone. After all, Effy was meeting with someone and she didn’t want this to put a damper on anything. “See. You’re one of those friends you can’t take anywhere.” Sarah laughed before pulling one of Melanie’s arms over her shoulder and heading towards the exit. “C’mon. There are tons of taxis out front.”
image
Melanie doesn’t resist when Sarah takes her arms if anything whining a little since Sarah is taking her away from the fun. “ICan I at least say hi to Opal? So she doesn’t try to eat ankles.” She grins, missing her orange tabby already. “Hey!! I am very take-able.”

“And yet everyone once in a while you see families around her.” He was quiet for a moment before he shrugged his shoulders. “I also think things have started to quiet down since slavery was abolished, I don’t think I see quite as much blood or sex on the streets.” He pointed out with a chuckle. “I don’t know much about what husbands are meant to do, like I said I don’t really know anything about that sort of life.” He snorted and shook his head. “Love, right. As if that has any place in Covaire.”
image
“Families can survive, I mean I'm living, and my parents died because of disease, not because of hunters or anything weird.” She tries to justified, thinking of her smiling mother in her deathbed. “I guess thing changes when there only people to pay and not people to own anymore. It always felt odd, paying to have slave sometime is the same as paying for a house. But the house doesn't eat.” Maybe her metaphor could work better if she used maintenance, but Melanie isn’t sure in her ability to even pronounce the word correctly at the moment. “Maybe not, life here is hard. But people find it...so maybe we are doing something wrong.”

Effy smiled and shook, a soft laugh slipping past her lips. “Keep going like that Melanie and you’ll make me blush.” She teased, keeping her arm around the brunette as she walked with her. “Now am I taking you back to my place for some sleep or would you prefer to go home?” She wasn’t sure she was keen on leaving Melanie alone for the evening, but if she wanted to go home she would just stay with her there.
image
“Don’t you need blood for that?” Melanie sincerely asks, trying to move along with Effy. She finds it easier if she tried to match her step with the blonde, follow the rhythm instead of noticing the wavering floor. Though floor shouldn’t waver, to begin with. “ I can go home with you, dunno if I can’t remember how to use the keys. Maybe you remember?” The jeweller is torn between staying a little longer with Effy and wanting to cuddle with Opal.

Melanie is tired.

The last invasion was not so long ago, merely months. She still wakes up, from time to time, reaching for her neck, breath agasp in the darkness of night, forcing her mind to keep those banish those ghosts deep into the nothing.

How long? She wonders silently, as she once more packs her silver reservoirs to be sent into the vaults of The Dominion. Hunter claims to cleanse the Earth of the monsters of Covaire, the protectors of ignorant humanity. Yet Melanie only sees monsters in the Hunters themselves,, cruelty bearing the mask self-righteousness and justification. How more of her fellow citizens must die? How longer she must try to defend herself, left almost half dead? After so long, she would have believed half-dead isn’t as bad as dead, yet she never quite come to an understanding of the pain of clinging to life. Every nerve set alight in agony as she refuses to die by the sheer virtue of stubbornness

Maybe if she was more coward, caring only about her own well being and survival, hiding into the depth of her home until the storm passes. Melanie does consider before letting the idea go. Her home has been breached before, by Hunter who considers a much worse sin to those who live among monsters. And no matter the pain, the bitterness and fear, Covaire is her home. The city of blood and sin is lodge deep into her veins, her whole being. Leopold Kennedy made her realize, while she appreciates it, she also in the same breath hates him a little for it.

She will fight, she knows this, this is a truth as clear as the sun rising each morning. She might even die.Dying for a city that will not mourn her, too human to be anything remarkable. Melanie smiles to herself, maybe that's could be a fitting end for someone named Ashworth.

“ — What kind of work do you edit? Videos, or books?
They’re so many things someone could edit— he’s curious to know which she does. It seems like an interesting field to work in.
“ — I’m a nurse. I work at the Nursing Home, not to far from the hospital, but I also do house calls for children.

He’s more than a regular nurse, but he doesn’t like to talk about all the training he has, because it feels like bragging.

“Books, mystery books now and then, sometimes romance, though not a big fan of romance, personally.” There’s a little twinkle of mischief in her eyes but she looks forward.  “Oh, so you get a chance to see all the generations. I like the little ones, they tend to be cute.”

“TEN?!” No, more than ten. She’d stopped counting at ten. “Damn. RIP your liver.” She knew Melanie probably didn’t care right now… but she was going to feel that in the morning. Sarah was sure of it. She laughed and shook her head. “Maybe I should just talk to Effy and take you home. There’s a line between drinking for fun, and being THAT drunk girl at a party.”
image
“It’s okay, I wasn’t using much.”She jokes, grinning a little at her own joke. “I want to say hello to Effy, I miss her pretty.” Melanie lazily opens her eyes. “ I’m not that drunk, it's only the floor doesn’t cooperate anymore, which is annoying.”

“ — I understand. It’s so dangerous to lose track of time at this hour.
Their food arrives quickly enough, and Theus takes both of their orders in his hands. Since they’re going the same way, he’s happy to hold her things until they reach her place. He’ll continue with his bag on his own, until he eats home afterwards.
“ — Is your work demanding?
image
“Sort of, I am an editor at home. Can get tedious.” She smiles, the lie easily leaving her lips. she’s too used to it at this point. And there was no need to actually inform of her job, no matter how handsome he was.  “How about you? What do you do?”
