This is an awesome video that shows you how to make a paladin helmet! The one made in the video even got given to Bex Taylor-Klaus, Pidge’s voice actress! It’s super cool

The Fan’s Guide to the Altean Language

UPDATED FOR SEASON 4 - First update for season 4

Thank you all for your overwhelming support. I plan on updating this guide for every season, so stay tuned! For a more indepth guide to season 3, check out @butteredonions post here!

New season updates will be within 1 week of premier

Questions? Comments? Want to chat? Let me know! Due to the popularity of this post, I may not see commentary in the tags, so hit up my askbox, the messenger, or the comment feature on the post.

With the increase of alien characters in season 3, we are getting away from this being purely the Altean language. Unfortunately, there’s no real way of knowing what is and isn’t considered “altean”, so I’m just going to continue to use “Altean Language” as the tag.

Units of time (Confirmed with Official Guidebook!)

  • Quintant = 1 day
  • Deca-Phoeb = 1 year
  • Phoeb = 1 month
  • Dobosh = minute
  • Varga = hour
  • Tick = a tad longer than a second
  • movement = week
  • @saiikavon has pointed out that in S2E8, the Blades of Marmora base would be closed for 2 quintants. When they mention that 10 Vargas have passed, Lance correctly estimates another 30 Vargas until the base is open again. From this it can be assumed that 2 Quintants = 40 Vargas or 1 Quintant = 20 Vargas.

  • Quiznak - a swear word, similar in use to Fuck, crap, or hell (ie: “Oh quiznak” or “What the quiznak”)
  • Quintessence - a type of energy. Context from the world indicates that it is likely some form of Life/spirit energy [EDIT] It’s a real word! According to dictionary.com : noun1.the pure and concentrated essence of a substance.2.the most perfect embodiment of something.3.(in ancient and medieval philosophy) the fifth essence or element, ether, supposed to be the constituent matter of the heavenly bodies, the others being air, fire, earth, and water. • Swathian Meerakeet - giant lizard-armadillo that is attracted to lights.
  • Zaiforge cannons - very powerful galra cannons. Commandeered by the rebels and Blades of Marmora
  • Sincline ships - Lotor’s trans-reality ships. A nod to Lotor’s origional GoLion name

Other useful info

  • The paladins left earth on a monday (S1E2)
  • Cryopod, cryo replenishers, and sleep pods have all been used to describe the same unit
  • The black lion is largest, the yellow/blue lions next largest, and the red/green ones the smallest. So Lance and Hunks lions would be described as about the same size
  • The swords the blades of Mamora use are made of Luxite, which is rare
  • Coran accompanied his Grandfather while the castle of lions was being built, potentially putting his age in the 600s (not counting the 10k year cryo-sleep)
  • He/him pronouns are used for Pidge until S1E6, and She/her pronouns from S1E6 onwards
  • Coran’s full name is Coran Hieronymus Wimbleton Smythe
  • Haggar’s altean name is Honerva. Her official title is High Priestess

  • The dates on Matt’s tombstone are 0010-05-25 to 0014-04-28. This format may be the correct date format, as Pidge didn’t realize anything was off until she realized Matt’s b-day was wrong

I’m having a breakdown. So the back cover of volume 37 is out, and by now we’ve all heard the preliminary translations of Edgeshot’s spiel to Kacchan.

But we didn’t have the images! Now we do, and I have Observations. Please note that I have used a combo of Google image translate and Japanese language websites for this. I don’t read Japanese but I’m fascinated by language and can’t help analysing it.

Firstly, I just want to comment on how bloody romantic the last line is, “Connect yourself to your future where you dreamed of your ideal”, considering he does exactly that, and thinks only of Izuku.

Risō: Ideal

Yumemita: Dream

Mirai: Future

Jishin: Self-confidence, assurance

Tsunaide: Link or connect (as if tied together—nice)

Misero: Show

Gorgeous, beautiful, fantastic work Edgeshot! It also really reminded me of Jeanist’s line to him about his hero name being a representation of his ideal self. These Heroes care about him so much 😭😭😭.

BUT, but but but, the part I really want to talk about is “Omae ga matsu kare wa… Deku wa kanarazu kuru!”

Omae: very informal ‘you’. Edgeshot is literally inside him so I think he’s allowed to be casual.

Matsu: Wait or look forward to

Kare wa: ‘He is’ or ‘boyfriend is’ (bear with me)

Kanarazu: Without a doubt

Kuru: Come or arrive

The sentence is very deliberate in the way Edgeshot says “He is… Deku is definitely coming.” So, what’s interesting about that? I WILL TELL YOU.

In Japanese it’s unusual to use pronouns, which is why you hear Deku saying ‘Kacchan’ directly to Kacchan all the blinking time. If it’s obvious who you’re talking by about via the context, then they don’t say he/she/they/you if possible. Here, have some evidence from translation websites and Japanese speakers:

So we already know Edgeshot is being extremely casual from his use of ‘omae’, and ‘kare’ is a casual term for boyfriend. It is unusual for him to unnecessarily use a pronoun that could also be interpreted as a reference to Deku as his boyfriend, no? He could have very easily just said “Deku is definitely coming!” without adding that ambiguity, But He Did Not.

I just think it’s interesting. And I do believe I will be thinking about this for the rest of the manga.

Edit to add:

1) Yes, ‘kare’ is the pronoun used to refer to Deku in the infamous 348 narration. 👀

2) ‘Tsunaide’ is also used in that same chapter, when Deku describes a boyfriend as someone you hold hands with: “te wo tsunaide”.

I’m not saying either of these things mean anything, it’s just interesting! * shakes uncontrollably *

I lived and worked in a lighthouse at a previous job.  There was a thick line painted in a circle around the shack where the fog signal was kept.  The line represented how close you could get to the fog signal without experiencing physical harm in the form of eardrums shattering or worse.

Even in the house it was LOUD.  Probably the loudest thing I have ever experienced but at a normal, predictable interval.  You would begin to time your sentences with little pauses with the rest of the lighthouse crew so you would talk like this while making your………..HORN…………. tea and then carry on talking because you knew when it would go off.  It rattled the walls and the dishes in our cabinet.

At least one girl had died there. They kept photos of her everywhere “in honor of her sacrifice” because she had decided to take the winter watch alone and died in a storm where bounders the size of mini vans had been lifted out of the ocean and left scattered across the island, to say nothing of the ice chunks.  People weren’t allowed to be alone on the watch after that.

One day a dead moose washed up on shore and it took my entire crew all day but we managed to rig up a line to hang it up to dry because we thought having a moose skeleton in the house would really spice the living room up a bit.  It did.  Weird shit happens when six of you are left alone, like ALONE ALONE, no cell reception, no wifi, just a radio to contact the real world and not a lot of reason to do that.  People don’t go on lighthouse jobs if they want to stay connected, I’ve found.

That said Id do it all again, I really do treasure those days

Placing these one after another makes it look like he left got a lighthouse job and came back six months later to update the drive through employee

Update to this post: I deadpanned "Alright, you can roll a perception check if you promise to be a good boy" and there was like a solid minute of silence
