i really don’t want to be an active twitter user. that sounds like hell. twitter is just heterosexual tumblr and it has less features

it really is and you can’t blog or be self reflective on there.

I’m cackling at every man in the comments here getting upset about this last part when it’s clearly a joke.

i am so tired of peeing. i drink the water, which i apparently need to live or something, then i have to go put the water somewhere else five minutes later. i drink the water, i go to a place to un-drink the water, i wash my hands, i leave, then i have to drink more water. guess where that water ends up? not in me! i give the water to my body and like a child it tosses it out and demands more. all hours of the day all hours of the night no matter what i am doing my life is interrupted by piss and this is bullshit

Hello I am here to bring your attention to the Chilean film “Una Mujer Fantástica” (”A Fantastic Woman”). It’s directed by Sebastián Lelio (Gloria) and you wanna hear some good stuff? It’s a movie about a trans woman, with the lead role played by an actual trans woman. Hollywood is shook. The lead actress is called Daniela Vega and critics are calling her performance “ravishing”, “stellar”, “remarkable” and “exceptional”.  Just a couple quick reviews:

“[A] stunning, deeply involving portrait of a woman with the borderline superhuman capacity not to hate herself for who she is, no matter who else does.” - The Playlist

“The movie represents a huge leap in terms of trans narratives onscreen, but by any standard, it’s a powerful drama of a woman whose suffering never dims her determination to keep moving forward.” - THR

Here’s the trailer:

[tw for transmisogyny and death]

And a summary:

Marina and Orlando are in love and planning for the future. Marina is a young waitress and aspiring singer. Orlando is 20 years older than her, and owns a printing company. After celebrating Marina’s birthday one evening, Orlando falls seriously ill. Marina rushes him to the emergency room, but he passes away just after arriving at the hospital. Instead of being able to mourn her lover, suddenly Marina is treated with suspicion. The doctors and Orlando’s family don’t trust her. A woman detective investigates Marina to see if she was involved in his death. Orlando’s ex-wife forbids her from attending the funeral. And to make matters worse, Orlando’s son threatens to throw Marina out of the flat she shared with Orlando. Marina is a trans woman and for most of Orlando’s family, her sexual identity is an aberration, a perversion. So Marina struggles for the right to be herself. She battles the very same forces that she has spent a lifetime fighting just to become the woman she is now - a complex, strong, forthright and fantastic woman.

So what I’m saying is: go support this movie. Show the world that stories about trans people sell and are a success. Support this movie with a real trans actress in the lead.

I got my first tattoo today as an 18th birthday gift to myself. I wanted to recreate the classic sci-fi alien abduction but with the USS Enterprise. I also wanted to keep it minimalist and in a way childish to embody the naivety and exploring spirit that’s always been present in Star Trek. Major shoutout to my tattoo artist kenfawong on Instagram for killing the game.

p.s. you may take inspiration on this tattoo, but you may not under any circumstances copy the exact work or style. This is the work of an artist and therefore it is his property and mine.

with Oscar Isaac and Diego Luna becoming fandom faves, I think it’s important to take a moment to re-evaluate the way you talk about your latinx faves.

as a latinx, I have often seen people talk about these actors and their characters in a way which makes me uncomfortable. this mostly comes in the form of them and their speaking spanish. for example: I have seen a lot of people referring to Diego Luna’s accent when speaking English as “cute” or “adorable”, yet these are a lot of the same people who would side-eye any Mexican/latinx with English anything less than perfect. It also relates to the immediate sexualization of the spanish language when it comes to these actors. I cannot count the amount of times people post things such as “[insert latinx character] speaking spanish during sex”. It makes it seem as if speaking their native tongue is inherently a sexual activity. I also see videos of them speaking spanish being posted with captions calling them names like “papi” and this is extremely harmful to the way people view the latinx community. there is already an extremely sexualized view of latinxs, specially women, as they are expected to be suave and sexy and curvy thanks to media stereotypes. By constantly assigning a sexual value to a person speaking spanish, you are helping to perpetuate this which ultimately is not gonna help anyone.

there is a very vast difference in the way people talk about their white faves vs. their latinx faves. there is an immediate sexualization of spanish only when it’s convenient. by praising these actors for speaking their language, you are making it seem as if spanish is only beautiful when spoken by a lucky few, only by the people you deem worthy enough to speak the language and be praised for it, while latinxs everywhere get harrassed for speaking it on the street. I understand this is not the intention of most people, but it still comes off that way and it is very harmful. Even when headcanons say things such as “[insert character] swearing in spanish when they’re mad”. It glorifies these aspects of them being bilingual but only when done by them, if a normal latinx swore in spanish in public while mad they’d be viewed as aggressive. These actors/characters are viewed as a show, kind of an extension of the “omg say something in Spanish” phenomenon. You’re viewing them through a lens that makes them into objects due to their ethnicity.

In summary, I am 100% on board for latinx characters and actors becoming fan favorites. I cannot begin to tell you how happy it makes me. However, be careful of how you speak of them. Appreciate the spanish language and their latinx roots, but do it in a way which is mindful and respectful.
