Let the Flames Begin || Kanika and Gail

Gail nodded as they walked and talked.  “I understand, and I promise to talk to him.  But just so you know…no matter what any of the Order has to say, you’ll always have a place here at the shop and in my home.  Alright?”
The older witch listened carefully to Kanika’s words  “Honestly, I think it might be good for you to be there.  I remember during the first war, the other Slytherins talked pretty freely about things.  Who knows…you might overhear something useful to the Order while you’re there.  Not that I’m saying I expect you to intentionally spy on anyone, of course,” she continued, looking a little ashamed at the thought.  “But if you happened to hear something and wanted to share…I’m sure the Order would be grateful.  In the meantime, do what you can to stay safe…and if possible, to keep your classmates safe, too.  Merlin knows, the muggle-borns are going to need help…”
As they arrived  back at the book shop, she trailed off, her expression both troubled and thoughtful.  Even with knowing what was coming…having had time to prepare, there was still so much to be done.  She didn’t feel ready for this…

She nodded. ˝Yeah... Yeah, alright. Thanks, Gail. I-I really appreciate it.˝ Kanika smiled. It felt good to have a home, and someone who was ready to support you and defend you.

˝You think some muggle-borns might return? If I were one, I’d never appear again. I mean, I’d probably travel to the furthest corner of the world and just wait for it all to be over. Hell, if I were a bloody Gryffindor I’d think twice before hoppin’ back on Hogwarts Express...˝ She mumbled. The idea that she spies for the Order was not the one she liked, but if played well, maybe she could get both herself and her uncle through the war unharmed. The important thing was to know how to play her role and be careful. ˝I’ll see what’ll be goin’ on. I’m not goin’ to get involved in anythin’ bad, don’t worry about that.˝

When they got back, Kanika felt how stressed Gail was, and she wanted to help. ˝Is there anythin’ I can do?˝

Despite hating the nickname Sammy, Kanika had been the only person allowed to do so since they had been so close. Bringing up her past relationships made her body seem a tad tense. It hurt inside still but she managed to try and forget as the other words slipped from her lips. “You’ve got me now...” Sam repeated with a little nod, and a smile. “I do. Plus I’m grateful.” Samantha continued to run her hand up Kanika’s back, slipping it under her shirt.

image

˝I’m grateful, too, Sammy...˝ She smiled, and her smile grew wider as Sammy slipped her hand under her shirt. ˝You know, I’ve never been more happy than I am with you. Never. You reminded me that there are good things out there in this shitty life, and you are sometimes the only thing I can hold on, you know?˝

“Do you want to go straight to your room or would you like something? A Drink? Something to eat?” Lillian broke more silence as the other smiled, but still ended up biting her lip. She’d might as well ask, the woman didn’t have the slightest clue what the other had been through nor what she had done in the days in the center. “I can make you something if you’re hungry..”

image

˝I-I... I don’t know. W-what can I ask for? I-I mean, I don’t want to bother you a lot, and... and I am a bit hungry, but if it’s a big problem for you to... to get me somethin’, it’s really no big deal, you know? You don’t have to. You don’t have to do anythin’, I... I don’t want to be a big burden, you know?˝ She mumbled, not knowing her limits, and scared of accidentally asking for too much.

The pain, brought upon by the brute strength of an experienced woman — skilled warrior, was evident in the sky girl. By morning she would wake to an ache in her entire body as muscles would protest, she knew from her own past when being trained. To overcome the pain you needed to bear it, that was how you pushed through. Every blow you received was a method of dealing and becoming better to avoid the next one coming.
Lexa watched as the girl gathered herself up and made way to the place she had been previously that was deemed her hut for the time being. “She has the will to fight.” she commented, addressing her general who too kept an careful eye on Kanika. While she stood no chance against Indra, she had the mental strength. It was clear she wouldn’t win, but the girl never gave up. It was all she and Indra needed to know. There was potential.
Image
The sun was shining beautiful, the warmth a gentle caress against her skin as Lexa made way to the stadium — the sounds of sparring could be heard, becoming stronger the closer she reached the area. Due to a meeting with Titus she failed to meet Indra before she continued her training with the sky girl they had given a choice. To make sure progress was made, she went to see for herself on how Kanika was doing.

When Kanika returned to the hut that was called hers, she just collapsed, her body exhausted. She wasn't used to this much work, and every muscle in her body hurt, shaking from exhaustion.

A part of her did start to wonder if this was the right thing to do. After all, it didn't matter to her where she dies. It was all the same to her, dying here from exhaustion, or by Grounders' hands back in that damn camp with other juvenile prisoners. All she wanted to do was live, and so far it seemed that the world had other plans for her.

It was hard falling asleep, when her whole body hurt, but the exhaustion did win in the end. Getting up in the morning was the hardest thing of all, however. How did those stupid teenagers think they could handle Grounders if this was their training? This was unlike anything they have done in space, and there was just no way they could win this, not even with guns.

The training in the morning was not better than the day before. Because of the pain that was always present, Kanika was slower, and clumsider than yesterday, which resulted in getting more hit.

Her only hope was to figure out this woman's style and maybe predict her next move, but it was hard to focus on anything considering how quickly the attacks were coming. Kanika was defending herself as best as she could, but it still wasn't enough.

Kanika didn't even notice when Lexa came to check up on her. She was too focused on Indra and attempting to block her.

Ashe shrugs, “No more or less popular than it’s always been. It pays well, because of the risks, and there’s always jobs going.” Ashe has only really heard of the Kyphi smokes, she doesn’t use them herself, so - “It depends, I think. There are cheap ones which are only so good, and then mid-price ones which are decent. Then there’s the expensive ones with precise brews for particular purposes, which can cost tens of galleons. It depends what you’re going for.”

The smile Ashe gives in return is wide and reassuring. “I try, is all,” she says. “Everyone deserves some kindness, unless they prove themselves unwilling to accept it and unworthy of it at all. There are many repentant Slytherins still hated and not given a chance. It’s even worse when their own House won’t even help them, it’s toxic. It just… it seems wrong to ignore it, and decent to try to help. Nothing more or less - just being a decent witch.”

˝Well, if I survived Azkaban, I can survive anything...˝ She said with a small shrug and a smile. ˝Curses are not that hard to break, I guess, one just has to be more... um... it’s more about feeling it than thinking about it, I guess... One has to improvize a lot.˝ She tried to explain. Tens of galleons? Definitely not what she was going for. ˝For a bit I think I’ll be only looking for the cheapest of the cheapest...˝ She mumbled.

˝Many people do not agree with that. Many think we weren’t supposed to ever be let out. A-and many weren’t. I just got a bit more lucky because I wasn’t of age back then... So they had trouble condemning me to life in Azkaban...˝ She said quietly, her eyes growing darker as she spoke about it. ˝It’s sad, really... Slytherins are always outcasts because of the stereotypes about them, and they have stereotypes about them because they’re outcasts... Kinda a vicious circle, isn’t it...?˝

Caught Red-Handed

She was right. Wars did end in bloodshed and the loss of many and what for? A new ruler? Pride? If the King could not take care of his people than he really was no man of power at all. “You have a point, m'lady,” he said with a bow of his head. “I will have to look into helping those that need it. Maybe then I will get the respect I think I deserve.”

She felt slightly uncomfortable as he bowed his head to her. She was no royalty, or anything even remotely important, and it made her feel horribly out of place. ˝Yeah, good luck with that, sir, a-as there are quite a lot of people who need helpin’...˝ She mumbled. ˝A-are you sure you c-can win this war and all? I know that Lannisters are rich bastards, so I’d like to see them g-get beaten.˝ And it would also make her loot nicer than if the Starks were the ones getting killed.

Mildly impressed was shown in the light raise of an eyebrow, falling down as quickly and would have been missed if you weren’t looking directly at her. “Not a bad tactic.. works well.” survival mode, an instinct everyone had but not all learned to trust. Hesitation caused delay which made you vulnerable. It was best to listen to your body and let it react. Causing distractions by form of thrown sand in your opponents eyes, gave you enough time to run and hide away. It might save your life.
“However, if given the chance.. I expect my warriors to have attacked before such.. distractions are even possible.” in other words, have killed before their enemy could gather themselves and continue the fight. There was only winning in combat. Losing was not an option. Losing meant death.
Lexa chose to ignore the comment. It was in the girl’s best interest that she was oblivious to some of what she had witnessed. Their lives were hard. This mild abuse in teaching was no pain compared to what they were capable of regarding their enemies.
“Noumou“.” she held her hand up, halting Indra who was about to go in for another blow. “Stand down, Indra..” it was clear the older woman wasn’t happy but she wouldn’t disobey her commander. “That’s enough for today..” she stepped closer, halting just inches from her hand that was sprawled out on the ground. “You may return to your room.. tomorrow you are expected to be here once more. Hopefully then you will be able to stand up longer.”

Kanika had no doubt that against any of them she would have no chance whatsoever. Breathing heavily, she was recovering from the numberous blows and it felt like her whole body was burning. Just as she thought she wouldn't be able to handle much more, it all stopped, and the woman she was sparring with stood down.

Shaking, she tried to find some strength in her left to get herself up again, to put her already completely exhausted muscles to work some more.

Lexa approached her and Kanika would lie if she said she wasn't terrified as the commander did that.

˝O-Okay...˝ She whispered, breathless, her lungs hurting. A part of her didn't dare to think, let alone ask what will happen if she doesn't get better in this fighting, and proves to be useless to them.

She wiped some of the blood that was dripping from the corner of her mouth, but thankfully, it seemed that all her teeth were still in place. ˝...fuckin' hell...˝ She muttered to herself, not wanting to think how many bruises she was going to have after all this.

With a lot of effort, she managed to get up on her feet. Her knees were shaking and threatening to give in at any moment, and it was truly just her stubborness helping her stand now.

Stress Relief

Stepping out from the shadows, obvious that she seen him, he chose to approach her with a warm smile, rather than being smug and only looking to snack.  There was something about her that drew Elijah to her.  She was alluring to him, maybe because she wasn’t frightened and already he could see she was gripping something, along with taking the mans wallet.  “I hope I didn’t frighten you.”  He only stepped out so far and then stopped a few few before her.  “A creature as lovely as yourself shouldn’t be lifting wallets to be able to fend for themselves.”  Extending only his left hand to her carefully not to frighten her.  “Allow me if you will.  I know a place around the corner that has exquisite food and a view that is breathtaking.”    Elijah wasn’t one that cared for smoking but if that was the least attractive thing this lovely woman did, then it was worth it to him.  His mind had shifted from the slight anger from the earlier spat with his brother, now fully focused on this wonderful creature before him.  Who was she?  She wasn’t from around here or Elijah would have known, he knows all the locals.  More-so, why wasn’t she frightened, not even a raised pulse but for a split moment but quickly back to normal.  Intrigued even more now, Elijah needed to know more about her.

“Allow me to introduce myself….I’m Elijah….”

She didn't exepct this man to approach him. Was it even a man? She wasn't sure, and she had no intention of letting her guard down anytime soon. Cautious, she observed his every step, the grip around her stake only growing firmer. If he was any danger to her, he will become nothing but a dust in the wind.

Frighten her? That sentence made her chuckle. It's been a whilst since anything could frighten her.

Just as she was thinking that he was getting to close and pondering whether she should attack first or not, he stopped and extended his hand, doing everything he could to make himself look as innocent and harmless as possible.

The offer was good. Too good to be true. Years ago before she became a Slayer she tried to beg on the streets, wanting nothing more but a few dollars to buy herself some food, and now, a stranger was offering her a place with food and a great view? There was more to all of this.

˝...I'm not interested.˝ She said quietly, tilting her head slightly. Her accent wasn't too heavily British, as she had been living in the USA for a whilst, but it was still there.

˝Well, Elijah, I am not sure what your intentions are, but I am quite sure we're not thinkin' same things and focused on the same tasks. How I get my money is thing, and if you want to threaten me about maybe callin' the cops, blackmailin' me into doin' shit I don't want to, well fuck, I got news for you. Try somethin' like that and you'll regret the bloody day you were born.˝

She was tired, her veins itched for some heroin, and she had no intention of wasting her time with some idiot that probably only wanted to get laid. Had he been a vampire, Kanika thought, he would've attacked her right then and there, as they were the only ones in the street at the moment.

Stress Relief

It had been a long and stressful evening, dealing with his brother’s irrational behavior was enough to send anyone over the edge and Elijah needed to clear his head.  An evening stroll in the Orleans side streets and some back alleys always helped, sometimes even feeding on a stranger and then compelling them to forget it all, depending on the depth of insanity his brother Niklaus would erupt into for an evening or two at a time.  Elijah was always very careful when he would choose to take a ‘stroll’ and tonight would not be different.  Dressed as always, in a suit, and casually strolling around the darkened corners, avoiding contact with many people, the irrational behavior that Klaus displayed on this eve really had unnerved Elijah.

That was until he spotted her.  He couldn’t see her features just yet but when he stopped in the shadows, the light was casting down from behind her.  She had long wavy locks, slender build but not too slender, and she looked nervous.  She kept looking around and it seemed as if she shivered some too.  It was rather a brisk night and he soon became infatuated with watching her.  He leaned against the wall still in the shadows in the corner and it wasn’t long before the dreaded argument with his brother had soon left his thoughts while concentrating on this intriguing creature before him.  A few people poking around the area and walking past her, one even slightly bumping into her, which made Elijah lean up off from the wall, ready to come to her rescue if it were needed.  A complete oxymoron considering he was originally there to feed off her, but at least he knew that he wouldn’t kill her.  He wasn’t about to let anyone do that to her.

It was about that time that when he stepped to the side, his footing made just enough of a sound with a can that lay on the ground to grab her attention enough for her to look in his direction and for him to stay still where he was, he knew this could go one of two ways, either way, she would be safe still. h7QEA

Kanika was new to this city, but then again, it didn't matter much. Considering how much she was moving from one place to another, never staying for more than a few days, every place was new to her.

However, she knew how to take care of herself. More or less. Had it not been for her crippling drug addiction which she was fueling daily because it was easier than to deal with reality sometimes, she would be able to say that she was completely independant, capable of defeating whatever came her way.

After all, she was a Slayer. Not the best one out there, but she was doing her job alright, and was still somehow alive, so that had to count.

Even during her short time as a Slayer she knew where to look for vampires. It was streets like these that were perfect for attacking on the unsuspecting ignorant fools. But today, it seemed somewhat peaceful. Aside from dumb people, of course. When one of them bumped into her, however, she seized the moment and stole his wallet. Serves him right.

Just as she thought that maybe her patrol should be done for the day, she heard someone accidentaly kick a can and she glanced towards the direction from which that sound came, immediately noticing a man standing there. Something was off about him, she could feel it.

Her eyes never leaving this man, she took out a pack of cigarettes from her pocket and put one between her lips, lighting it in the next moment. Then, as she was putting the pack of cigarettes back in her pocket, she carefully wrapped her fingers around a stake, as she always tried to carry a few with her, no matter where she went.

This was going to be interesting, she thought, her experience telling her that everyone was a threat.

Crystallin slowed and offered Kanika the water bottle sternly. “Almost. We’ll stop for a moment though alright? You look ready t’ fall over.” She’d carry the girl if she had to, but it would make it a little harder to maintain the illusion that she was a figment of Kanika’s imagination. Still, she’d do it. Crystallin wasn’t going to let this poor child suffer. In the end, it would be okay.

“Do you need a snack?” she asked, giving Kanika time to catch her breath. She hoped the girl would make it up the stairs… Once they were there, she could relax. Hopefully Crystallin could start weaning the girl very slowly off her poison too.

Kanika took the bottle without much thinking, and was slightly confused when she found herself drinking something that didn’t have alcohol in it. ˝Y-yeah... I’m... I’m fine, though... Just... clumsy, that’s... that’s all...˝ She mumbled with a small shrug.

Snack? She wasn’t sure if she was hungry, but figured that eating something wouldn’t be such a bad idea. ˝I-I guess... H-how many stairs are there...? A-a lot or...? If there are... are lots of stairs... c-can we take a b-break every once and a whilst...? A-and snacks don’t sound that bad...˝

“ There was noone there, it is just me and you, I saw you crashing your car on the tree, left my own just a bit far from here and I came to help, “Elena said the excuse hoping it would work and for the young woman to believe at least that, she was not afraid if a bullet would hit her since she would heal instantly, but the last thing she wanted was to give the girl a chance to escape, that would ruin her plan as it would get her pissed and ended up dealing with the situation in an entire different way.

Taking a deep breath her face was remaining calm her eyes looking at the young woman as she continued to say “ consider me your guardian angel seeing as I was just in time here, “ a small smirk appeared on her lips as a thought crossed her mind that she was hardly one , more like someone’s worst nightmare, “ you should be gratefull that I found you in time  instead of pointing a gun in my face. That is your way of saying thank you when someone is offering their help?”

“ Open the door , lower the gun and I can get you to the hospital, consider the fact that you might have injuries unless you would like to stay here without any treatment and well” Elena paused in the hopes that this would work or if it would not. Then she would use her strength to get the door open , getting the girl out of there with force if it would come down to that.

˝I might be drunk, high, what not, but I know what the fuck I see. I took no shitty drugs that make me see shit tonight. Somethin' was there. Fuck me, but it was. And now it's not. But you are. Magically, you just appeared out of fuckin' nowhere. I do not buy that fuckin' shit, alright? Step away from the car. Now! Or I'm pulling the trigger!˝ She growled, not believing anything the young woman said. Guardian angel? She had no guardian angel. If she did, she wouldn't be where she was now.

˝I didn't ask for your help... I don't want it. I don't like you. I feel somethin's wrong. So I'll tell you this one more time to back the fuck off or the last thing that goes through your brain is a fuckin' bullet. Got it?˝

She wasn't hurt. And if she was, she definitely couldn't feel it, as she was panicking way too much right now to be aware of anything else but the feeling that this woman was anything else but evil.

Her green eyes rolled at the others comments, even though her heart was pounding in her chest. Tori’s adrenaline began to course though her veins, as she was getting really pumped for this fight. The danger in it alone, made a small sliver of a smirk grow on her lips. “Well, glad some motherfucker also came up with blades.”

A small scoff of a laugh tore through Tori’s lungs, sparing a glance towards the young slayer. “If you want to run, get your ass outta here. I can handle whatever the fuck this is.” Tori cracked her neck, rolling her shoulders. She was ready.

Image

Not even a second late, after her gun was out of her grip. Tori slide two daggers out of the back of her jeans. “Let’s just say, I do not reply much on just one simple weapon.” Now she was just being cocky. Her green hues began to dance around the darkness. “Let’s move to the exit, slowly.”

˝You got blades? That’s sweet! You fast enough to cut all these fuckers up?˝ She asked, hopeful. ˝Great, man, then you deal with these bastards, and I’ll be out of here, savin’ my neck and all. Enough Slayers die every day for me to end up dead as well, you know?˝

Just as she wanted to step closer to the door, she could swear she felt something move and block her way out. Everything was dark, but she could see a glimpse of movement. ˝...so yeah, guess that me escapin’ is kinda out of the question...˝ She mumbled, and returned back to being closer to the other woman.

˝Yeh, something is there... I mean, one of these things... you think you can take it down usin’ your blades? I was kinda hopin’ to save bullets in case more of ‘em come after us and start attackin’ us like cray. Figured it’s easier to defend yourself when they’re still a bit far, you know? I don’t risk bein’ hurt. And you don’t either.˝ She rambled, not quite sure what she was doing in this situation. All she wanted was to get out of here now.

“Curse-breakers found the recipe in the tomb of a witch-priestess a few years back,” Ash said smiling. “Had the Healers all in a tizzy.” Ashe still has the stack of medical journals all going on about Kyphi and how it could be used with other magical medicines to treat a variety of problems. Good bedtime reading, if only because it exhausted her to make head nor tail of what they were saying.

Not very pretty. Ashe grimaces slightly and shrugs. “They are Goblins. They’ve got their own not very pretty stories. So long as its not about hurting any of them - and you’ve told me that you haven’t - then you should be fine. They’re used to rudeness, used to horrible stories. They don’t like them, but that’s why they have the toothy poker faces they do. Scare everyone enough to consider otherwise.”

˝Curse-breakers, eh? Guess that means that such a job is quite popular...˝ She mumbled, now really hoping that she gets the job. ˝These herbal smokes and all... They’re not very expensive, right? I mean, I don’t have much money in the first place, have to roll my own cigarettes half of the time and all. ...˝ However, her addiction was strong enough to not let her stop with her habit.

¨You know, you’re good at this. Boostin’ up courage and everythin’, you know?˝ She smiled. ˝You know, man, I’ll owe you if I get this job... Hell, even if I don’t get it... you still helped and were super kind. That’s already a lot, you know?˝ She said, not knowing how she was going to repay her, but knowing that she will.

“I think I know a few places,” she nodded. “As long as you stay put we’ll be sheltered from the elements an’ hopefully even comfortable.” She had in fact gotten a small place together for herself - an abandoned attic - that was as well furnished as she could. It was clean, cozy, and she had been able to set up some basic provisions. It would be a good place to rest and start Kanika’s road to recovery.

“Come on then, it’s this way,” she nodded, slipping into a back street. She’d have to make sure Kanika didn’t fall behind or try to fuss too much about the awful habit, but all in time. Crystallin would help and Kanika would get better. That was the main goal.

Kanika just stumbled along, not really listening to what she was saying. ˝Shelter... I like that... roof and all... that’s good...˝ She mumbled, only focused on what she had in her backpack. All she wanted was to find some place and shoot up, that was all, and if this girl knew a place where she could do that, that was brilliant.

Slightly breathless, she followed the other girl, already not able to remember her name. ˝We far...?˝ She asked, tired and shaking.
