Radiant Atmospheres, an Oakland, CA based artist collective, has been doing summer tours with their psychedelic light shows for roughly 17 years. Providing kinetic spectacles to outdoor dance parties all over Northern California is a labor of love for this ragtag family of brilliant minds and misfit personalities.

Myself along with Joe Heath are collaborating on this project, not only as the filmmakers, but also as members of the collective. Lighting at live events is often times overlooked and under-appreciated, so I want to celebrate and preserve what Radiant Atmospheres is doing with their genius-harebrained light shows.

This documentary brings the audience into the fold of the little-known and even lesser appreciated culture of artistic event lighting, programming, and stagehandery. The viewer is warmly embraced into the family, presented with their history, and invited to share in their love, work, struggles, and triumphs.

I have decide on “not to film school”. Why? Because I don’t have £20,000 for tuition fees.

Both film schools I have looked at offer scholarships, though it’s one scholarship awarded per intake and they only give scholarships to “People who show promise to be exceptional filmmakers”, which is fair...

My new Vlog series on Screenwriting.

I’ll be going through exercises presented in, “The Screenwriter’s Workbook” by Syd Field with the intent (or hope) that it will help me focus my attention on completing my first feature length screenplay. I have written quite a few shorts over the past few years and want to attempt something on a larger scale. I’ve never really known how to go about focusing my ideas and concepts into a larger sized project and the task can seem daunting to those of us new to the process. So here goes!

Me and my friends had the pleasure of watching the film “Once” and it was beautiful. Just the way everything was. Just the way the music was. Just have a listen and you will understand what I mean.

David Yates to direct a film version of the sci-fi classic 'Doctor Who'

David Yates, most commonly known for directing the final four films of the "Harry Potter" series ("Order of the Phoenix" through "Deathly Hallows Part 2"), has teamed up with Jane Tranter in hopes of producing a film based on the long-running BBC series "Doctor Who."

According to an article from Variety, this will not be the first attempt to push the sci-fi show to the big screen. "Doctor Who and the Daleks" was released in 1965, followed by "Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D." only one year later. But will "Doctor Who" fans accept this new adaptation, which will apparently "take a completely fresh approach" to the story? There haven't been many positive comments on IMDB ("NO" makes a frequent appearance), but is it too soon to tell?

Let us know what you think: Reblog this post or drop a comment in our ask box.

Wanted: Intern/Editing Assistant ASAP

These one-leg-kick shenanigans are really getting to me, ladies and sirs. Though I’m supremely grateful that so much work has come in this year and that I’m releasing a new movie, it has come to my attention that I require assistance. Specifically, on the post-production side but also in many other areas in the many things that I do.
From day one I’ve tried to everything myself but I’m no longer in my twenties and sugar has more adverse effects these days as opposed to positive. My body is tired and my wee attracts ants.
I require fresh blood. Fresh blood and cleaner urine.
(Note: to all lecturers reading the above references to wee, do not be alarmed. Your students love hearing about wee. Ask them.)
Which is why I have turned to the interwebs to look for help - and boy, do I need some immediate help. The main area I need assistance is for video and audio editing but that’s not all. Not by a long shot.
Whoever I take on will be assisting in not just the post-production process, but will be coming with me on-set, assisting in pre-pro, helping out on matters related to my band, helping out with the release of my upcoming film ‘Relationship Status’, all of it.
Anything that I do that has anything to do with creativity, you’ll be a part of and hopefully learn something along the way.
I won’t be able to pay much. If I could, I’d hire a permanent staff to work nine to nine hours everyday. But what I can pay, I will. There may be a base allowance per month of ‘not much’ but I’ll definitely cover food and transport and any jobs you work on with me that are corporate paying jobs will entitle you to a cut.
This won’t be a 9am to 5pm, 5 days a week gig - you’ll be called on as and when you’re needed, and hours will be erratic. Be prepared.
If you work out as a hard working and bright individual, I will also assist you in producing a short film after the three months are up. And by assist, I mean every step of the way - the writing process, pre-production, production, post-production, all of it.
You’ll have access to all my equipment, my contacts, my gear. Hell, if you’ve got a feature film idea that’s half-decent I may even produce that, who knows. But short film? Most definitely.
Of course, if you’re not a hard-working and bright individual I’ll spot it a mile away and set my cat on you. I do not trim her claws for this very purpose, and I train her to attack at my command.
This won’t be a ‘normal’ internship/apprenticeship. No, sir. My methods may not be industry-standard and you may even find the way we do things here downright insane.
But I will tell you this - If you’re interested in learning about how to make films, you’ll learn a great deal.
If you’re interested, read on. If you’re not, please send it to someone who might be interested.

Beautiful! It’s a cool choice to only see her pointy toes, and not see the whole figure. And for those of us who know the original illustration, your film begs our eyes to make that intra-textual connection. This is a wonderful example of how to make use of the original illustration, but do so in a unique, unexpected and extremely cinematic way. Bravo Marie! You’ve done such excellent work animating Tiny Stories last year. Delighted to see you contributing your steller skills to this new volume. thanks again <3 == Contribute your Tiny Films of Tiny Stories here!

PEOPLE ARE GONNA WATCH THIS.

by Liz Shannon Miller
Nothing kills me in a horror film like the details. Endless CGI wastelands are not nearly so heartbreaking as a half-burned photograph of a family vacation, or a beheaded teddy bear waiting for the return of the child who loved it....

This essay is a great look at the film Cloverfield and why the handheld-camera technique is more meaningful than it may at first seem.

A Bright Wall in a Dark Room posts essays similar to this one on a frequent basis, all of which examine different aspects of various films.
