Rewatched episode 1 after getting to the end of the flashback arc and realized for the first time that the guy in the street who tosses money to the storyteller was Nie Huaisang and was like OH… THAT MOTHERFUCKER… HE PAID THE DUDE TO TALK UP HOW EVIL AND VENGEFUL THE YILING PATRIARCH WAS… WHERE MO XUANYU WOULD HEAR ABOUT IT…

Oh to be a fly on the wall of that commission appointment though

NHS: I want you to tell stories of the Yiling Patriarch

Storyteller guy: OK, I can do that

NHS: But I need to you to make him sound extra  bad and evil this time

SG: That does come standard in Yiling Patriarch stories, yes

NHS: Yeah, but I need you to turn it up to, like, a seventeen. I need you to make him sound like the worst dude  to ever  have lived. The kind of dude whose attention you would only wish on someone you wanted to suffer. I need you to paint a picture of a dude so bad that if an emo goth teenager was looking for a way to necromantically summon an evil demon to get vengeance on his abusive family, he would hear your stories of the dark and vengeful Yiling Patriarch and think to himself “ah, yes, that’s the bitch”

SG:

SG: this is an extremely specific scenario sir, is everything okay at home?

NHS: *crying* No

Papercraft commission of Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian (and Li'l Apple and a bunny), in a pose inspired by Gustav Klimt's famous painting The Kiss! Lan Wangji may be a little disgruntled at being interrupted, but Wei Wuxian is, of course, laughing the whole time.

This piece had some of the most complicated layering I've ever done in a papercraft, which meant I had to take even more care than usual with how every piece of paper was placed and the order in which they could be glued - and I already take a lot of care with that, no matter what I'm making! But the extra time was definitely worth it - I'm really happy with how the final piece came out. ^_^ A very sweet scene for WangXian!

At some point in tumblr history, the tumblr cycle of hipster media consumption added a component of "mandatory moral value" to its justification for praising or hating anything, which has made it exhausting to come across countless displays of mental gymnastics to justify, morally and ethically, why liking or not liking whatever piece of media (or part of it) makes you essentially a good or a bad person.

The cycle was always there, but it went from this

to this

and sometimes I think we're past it and then I go to a tag and come across some manifesto that makes me feel like I'm in hell.

I've decided not to reply to things on this post because everyone's either assigning me fandoms at random (I should start making a list), making their own dissertations, complaining that I made this counterclockwise or adding their own takes (more or less related to what I actually said) BUT I'm going to reply to @diaspro-back-here because it was the other way around, actually.

Tumblr exported this behavior with the user migration that started taking place with the consistent restriction of adult content (which began slowly in 2013 and culminated with The Big Ban in 2018).

This thing I'm talking about, this switch I illustrated, happened somewhere in the early 2010s on tumblr, by 2013 we had already moved completely to the 2nd graphic situation. In my recollection, 2011 started to show some of the changes, they became more prominent in 2012 but 2013-2018 was absolute peak of this behavior.

After that period, after the migration, for a brief moment, some of the old Tumblr ecosystem started going back to its roots. There was a new rise of the shitposts and longing for the tumblr nostalgia of cringe days past, with blogs that would compile the Tumblr Classics. It was also after this time that lesser known tumblrinas became better known youtubers and started amassing views and making coin out of past "Tumblr cringe" they weren't even a part of. It was also after this time that Tumblr Famous Users of days past, who had disappeared or became infamous, started being interviewed in The New Republic or The New York Times. There were pieces of media that became popular in this brief period (2018-2021?) that were sure candidates of this cycle and only were cancelled retroactively because the mindset had become less intense when they became popular.

I don't have the compiled receipts to throw an anthropological study but I'm positive this was a "Tumblr Original" because I was always the only one in my friend group who used Tumblr consistently and, when I brought up something of this nature in conversation, people had become accustomed to dubbing it a "Tumblr" thing.

It became "the sjw site" in a pejorative sense to outsiders who had some notion of it and it was linked in people's heads with "exaggerated discourse". It leaked naturally into AO3 because most of the users were also Tumblr users but it started invading Twitter, in my opinion, as the migrations started happening. I have tons of particular memories of trying to get people from outside the Tumblr bubble to understand this dynamic, before it had leaked elsewhere (my favorite was when my bestie thought, for the longest time, that it had singlehandedly been the fault of the Tumblr Les Mis fandom post 2012 movie).

The thing is, Tumblr developed the craft but Twitter made it mainstream.

Even in the days when Tumblr was at its most popular, the way in which the userbase determined the behavior of the site made it a complicated (and sometimes hostile) environment for brands or Famous People to be in. Unless said people understood the tumblr behavior because they too had some things in common with it (for example, eternal tumblr survivor Neil Gaiman). So Tumblr was, even at its most popular, a pretty closed containment.

Twitter, on the other hand, was the platform in which Famous People were.

Taking this discourse and putting it in the front door of those who created the media in question was a step Tumblr only took when forced to do so (for example, when interviewers thought it was so funny to read fics or show fanart to the actors playing roles in these pieces of media, without anyone's consent).

Twitter took this behavior and put it in the orbit of not only people responsible for the media discussed but also in close reach of people who wrote articles for Serious Publications. So, the Tumblr Discourse of the past, that was argued among users alone, became mainstream news in Twitter.

So, yes Twitter made it worse, but it wasn't the one that brought it here, it is Certified Tumblr Original.

Context:

The original video, for anyone who hasn't seen it:

And the relevant album cover:

Sessler was a teenager when "We're Not Gonna Take It" it was on the charts. Probably had MTV so he saw the video.

No fuckin' idea how he thought it was in support of "traditional American values."

No one disrespects my man Dee in this house.

Never forget when he sat in front of a congressional hearing about Lewd Music Corrupting the Youth and completely shut that shit down in the most professional manner that no member of that committee expected from a hair metal musician. They thought they'd get easy points off of a dumb metalhead and this man not only knew exactly what the fuck he was talking about, he tore their arguments apart.

tiktok is such an awful app, it's almost designed to feed you misinformation and expose you to insane discourse. unlike beloved tumblr, the app that feeds me misinformation and exposes me to insane discourse

No, no, no, you see on tiktok an algorithm feeds you misinformation. On Tumblr I feed myself misinformation from my charcuterie board of hand-selected unhinged mutuals.

None of that mass market junk. Only artisanal, small batch, sustainably cultivated, fair trade horseshit.
