I’m not a haladriel shipper (our girl deserves better), however I do actually think that, in a twisted way at least, Halbrand/Sauron actually did start to fall in love with Galadriel. She ‘believed in him, saw strength in him, pushed him to heights that no one else could.’ And if she did side with him, they would be an unstoppable force, quite literally. And I think Galadriel was starting to fall for what she thought Halbrand was. But Sauron’s love is very conditional. He wants her by his side but if she refuses he will tear her down for her ‘betrayal.’

I actually really like the way this was written. Especially because in the books, we know Galadriel is one of the few people Sauron actually fears. He fears her because he knows her so well. He fears her because she had been the key to putting him into power, and she may well also be the key to tearing him down. He has seen her anger, and he knows he would be a fool not to be terrified.

Edit: it’s been brought to my attention it wasn’t actually in the books (though I still plan to check and see if it’s in there) but I know in Tolkien’s commentaries he did emphasize that Sauron was afraid of Galadriel. Thanks to the person who pointed it out to me!

Edit 2: I also found a line in the Silm which backs up my point: “He [Sauron] perceived at once that Galadriel would be his chief adversary and obstacle.”
