When will creators of famous and beloved franchises realise that no fan in the history of fandoms has wanted the sequel with the new generation to have higher stakes and more angsty drama than the original.

A Fan: Wow, can’t wait to see the heroes’ children living in a world that has been made better by the original heroes, having a loving and respectful relationship with the hero I loved and respected as a child, and dealing with their own adventure that might not be as high stake as saving the world, but is important for their own personal journey.

A creator: How about the world is ending again, the new generation hates the heroes, who have become major assholes for no reason, and everything is bigger and goes more boom.

Hobbit/Lord of the Rings is the SINGLE exception to higher stakes sequel

and you know why? it’s bc nothing in lotr undid what happened in the hobbit

the hobbit was a lower-stakes story about bilbo helping some dwarves reclaim their ancestral home, and in lotr (the book at least) tolkien goes out of his way to talk about how bilbo lived for a long time rich and famous and happy, and that erebor and dale are prosperous and successful. the threat is something that bilbo brought home with him, but if bilbo hadn’t found it, it would have fallen into worse hands.

the reason why higher-stakes sequels are so often disappointing is bc it’s a betrayal of the original work, and undoes its premise and its victory. in the hobbit, they were never setting out to save the whole of middle earth, so the fact that the whole of middle earth ends up in peril during lotr doesn’t feel like a betrayal. terrible things happen in lotr, but they are better than they would have been in the hobbit hadn’t happened, and that’s why it works

some of you need to make your bed and have a shower with a soap that smells nice, and then sit in a chair near the window and have tea with milk and read a hardcover book and see how your creative block is after that tbh.

i'm not saying creative block isn't a real or difficult phenomenon. i'm saying creatives have a tendency to neglect themselves physically and emotionally in favor of manic bursts of productivity. a little softness and clean sheets and a bagel will go a long way. make a playlist and light the fancy candle you've been saving for a special occasion. life is a special occasion.

I saw the headline of that new marie kondo article that’s goes ‘mk admits to giving up on tidying up after her third child’ on twitter with just hundreds of people yelling about ‘vindication’ in the comments below, and I was like… I’m willing to bet actual money that the article is really about her priorities changing and that she still enjoys tidying up, but her approach to and amount of time spent on it has been altered because she’d rather spend time with her children? sooo I skimmed the article and I’m not saying somebody owes me money but somebody definitely should.

I wish I could say that I’m shocked that people on the internet would - still - be so erroneously outraged over an asian woman politely suggesting you treat yourself and your home with kindness (because your home has an enormous effect on your mental and physical health) while giving you tips on how to organise your home in small, achievable ways that you can adapt to suit your needs and wants, but I’ve been on the internet way too long for that.

she taught me several small tips that I still use in my everyday life and find hugely helpful, especially as a neurodivergent person who’s definitely not a minimalist. anyway, I hope marie kondo has a good day.

Hey, if Cecilsweep is making you consider to get back into Night Vale (which I strongly recommend, it’s fantastic), but you don’t feel like listening to several years worth of content, I suggest you to start with episode 210 - Ten Years Later.

It’s a redo of Episode 1, but with every single difference and development that happened in these ten years. It’s an excellent way to mostly catch up, as well is the beggining of the current arc. After that, we’re currently in Episode 220, so you won’t have to listen to that much to be caught up.

(Also, Night Vale has official transcripts now! They’re linked in the official website)

it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of when its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...

I don't Think ive seen anyone on here talking abt some US states forcing teachers to remove all books from their classrooms and force them to only have pre-vetted books available or else face possible JAIL TIME ???

Not to sound like a twitter user but why aren't people talking about this omg

Please note the third degree felony???

Also lots of articles if you search "Florida book ban" or smth similar online. I'm just shocked I've not seen much about this, maybe people don't know it's happening??

If you're not completely plugged in Ron DeSantis, the governor doing this, is the republican front runner for president next year.

Virginia's Glenn Youngkin who has presidential ambition is also doing this and almost everything else DeSantis is doing such as attacking abortion and trans healthcare access but is somehow holding onto moderate street cred. Don't fall for it. He's as extremist as DeSantis or any other republican.

all of your feelings are valid as in “worth acknowledgment and internal consideration” but some of your feelings are also stupid and mean, and you need to deal with that shit without making it anyone else’s problem

like we are all beings of light, namaste, but also every single one of us has an ugly, dumb, selfish, lazy goblin living inside of us which can never be silenced or destroyed. and being a decent person means keeping that little fuck in his special little playpen hidden away in your heart, with his colorful enrichment rattles and his favorite pieces of raw meat, where he can pipe up with his wretched little opinions and you can nod sagaciously at him and pat him on the head and tell him you understand why he feels that way and never, ever let anybody else get their feelings hurt by him, because he sucks shit and nothing he has to say is worthy of notice by anyone but you. you should pay attention to him, but only because it’s important to understand your own worst impulses, and because trying to ignore him will make him break down a wall and run out into the street where he can show passerbys his privates and eat cigarette butts right off the ground. your goblin is valid: that doesn’t mean he’s fit for company.
