The others in the village - they thought this was something I wanted. Something I chose to do. But it never felt that way to me. No, it was not a choice. It was an obligation. Because if not me, then who?

No. Killing you won’t bring my family back. I’m done. Nulla è reale, tutto è lecito. Requiescat in pace.

Hey all, I know its a bit silly, but I wanted to see if I could have the help of the internet with this go fund me. My coworker, within the last few months, had a newborn baby. Shortly after, he became ill, and then needed emergency surgery. Within the first week of being home, his wife stumbled across their dog unable to use it's hind legs. A slipped disc means thousands of dollars in vet bills, between the imaging and surgery. I know it's a lot, but if you could pass this along, I'd really appreciate it. If you can donate, wonderful! If not, please share and let's see what we can do. This family is so wonderful and loving but they never can catch a break it seems. So if we can help, even just a little, I know it'll make a huge difference for them. Please share and remember, every penny counts.

Super Mario Odyssey Review

Hello! As an opening statement I’d like to say this blog/review is for friends that trust my reviews and opinions on games. I will be keeping this open to the public for all to read and enjoy an honest opinion about video games that I play. To those that are strangers to me reading this, I thank you for your time and hope you continue to follow me!

Score: 9/10, Must play for any Switch owner

Pros: -Open and vivid worlds to explore -If you can explore it, you’re usually rewarded -Ton of content to explore even after beating the campaign -Excellent controls, easy to pick up and play, but make great use with the mechanics -Cappy may seem like a gimmick, but 80% of the game you still play as “Mario” -Variety of enemies from old with some newer enemies introduced -Soundtrack matches well with each planet Cons: -Certain moves are tied to motion control only -Camera occasionally can cause issues, making controlling awkward at some moments (it’s not enough to write a paragraph on, just annoyances at times)

Mario Odyssey is the newest entry in 2017 to the Mario series, which I would call the true successor to Super Mario 64. The game brings in mechanics from every Mario game from 1985-today. Including the roll, ground pound, triple jump, etc. With a new mechanic being introduced, the ground pound jump which is great for reaching higher ledges in a narrow area on the map. The campaign itself is about 12-15 hours long; however this is not a bad thing because there is still content to be played after you complete the game. In this new Mario entry you are collecting moons to complete each Kingdom. Every kingdom has a select number of moons that must be collected to complete. This is easily achieved as the minimum needed you will typically find as you’re playing through objectives of each Kingdom. (Typically 2-3 objectives)  Each level has gold coins and purple coins to collect. The gold coins purchase hats/outfits that are strictly cosmetic. The purple coins are kingdom specific; these are used to purchase outfits to allow you to get into certain parts of the level. Luckily this is not a necessity as it’s usually a 1-2 room bonus to earn moons.

The greatest part about this game is you can collect the minimum and still enjoy the game if you just want to complete the main story and move on. For those that enjoy finding hidden pathways and semi-obscure areas to find moons and coins there is also a lot of room for that. For a game that requires you to collect, it’s not a burden. It makes the game quite enjoyable considering once you meet the minimum you’re not forced to continue. If you’ve played Breath of the Wild and remember how tedious it was collecting the seeds, you will not find that with this game. I typically found all of the moons necessary to complete the kingdom within about 1-2 hours per kingdom; however I kept collecting the moons due to the way each level is designed. One major point to make: Odyssey takes advantage of most camera angles, the levels were designed intelligently. Typically if you’re scaling a tower or a hill you’ll typically find points of interest within the games peripheral vision. Whether it’s coins or a moon on top of a hill, the game takes great advantage of all points on the map. Exploring everywhere always seemed rewarding, even if it’s just gold coins- but some of the puzzles are simply fun to play as is. Since each Kingdom is broken into smaller worlds it makes it easier to explore each area without feeling overwhelmed looking in any direction. The new mechanic going from 3D-2D is also a very smooth transition, not only graphically- but the music continues to play the same in an 8bit mode as you’re progressing through the 2D parts. It’s a bit of a gimmick, but it’s a really fun gimmick- especially towards the last few kingdoms. As the game introduces Cappy to the series, my first impressions were “this can be cool, but how much of it is a gimmick?” (Remember F.L.U.D.D.?) Thankfully using Cappy to take possessions of enemies and creatures throughout the game is a very smooth transition. Using this mechanic is quite intuitive and fun; in a lot of ways you can only reach certain areas by using an enemy’s ability to get there. (I.E. a bullet bill to access a ledge that is not accessed simply by jumping to it) One major point to make is you spend most of your time as “Mario”. You’re not constantly having to play as creatures you don’t want to play as which makes the experience feel like a Mario game still.  It’s also a best practice to learn the skill set of each enemy you can possess. I was finding a lot of moons and kingdom currencies (purple) per each kingdom with this method.

Cappy is used as a main attack in the game; for most of the game he’s fun and easy to use. One complaint I have is being forced to use the motion controls for a few attacks, even if you disable “use motion controls” you still have to use the motion controls for those certain attacks. Which is strange considering you mostly play with B and A (X and Y are duplicated) as the jump and attack, there is no reason to not have used those buttons for the spin attack (this can easily be worked around by spinning Mario with a thumb stick, then throwing the hat.) The other two attacks are an upwards and a downwards hat throw. For 99% of the game this is fine; however there were a few moments when it was needed in order to get to a certain location. Considering you have mirrored buttons, there was no reason to not just have it go to a button press. The issue with this is also in the handheld mode, you’re still required to use the motion with joycons attached to the rails of the switch. It’s as awkward as it sounds. At a minimum the spin and homing hat could be attached to the X and Y buttons, and maybe have the hat up/down on the triggers. I found this part of the control scheme to be bad not really that fun to use. (Similar to even a PS3 gyroscope certain games made you use, if you remember that not feeling too great) Don’t let this dissuade you from playing, as most of the game is playable without using the motion controls, it’s only on the occasional moment when it becomes more cumbersome than anything.

Overall my experience with this game is very positive. Everything from the level design, characters you meet along the way and soundtrack you’re left with a fun adventure game, which has innocence at times. After beating the game I find myself coming back to it each day to play for at least 1 hour per day to collect moons I’m missing. The game is filled with clever hidden areas and puzzles to explore. Each kingdom feels unique from each other. This game is very refreshing to play and a huge success for Nintendo so far. It’s a well crafted video game that deserves a lot of the praise it has been receiving. It’s a simple to play game with a lot of fun to be had. Using your imagination and Mario’s abilities to gain access to hidden areas makes it the piece of art it truly is. This is one of the best games I’ve played in 2017.
