rule of thumb to future college students: don’t feel bad about being weird because someone is always weirder. i felt awkward because i was walking around the dorm in just socks but then a guy got on the elevator with me and as he walked out i realized he was barefoot. this is not the first time that happened. i thought it was a bit strange to watch anime with some friends in a common room at odd hours but there’s a person at my dorm with a taako poster on their door for all to see. people have whiteboards on their door exclusively to draw memes on. everything is just whatever

Yeah, dorm life has no rules, honestly. Even if you are the weirdest one, I guarantee at least one person is looking at you in awe thinking “man, they’ve really got it figured out, huh?” Or at least they’ll think you’re some kind of trickster deity.

I reblogged this earlier, but really it can’t be understated. College is a place where a bunch of people who have lived their whole life under supervision are all suddenly without parents and whatever happens happens. In high school there may have been cliques and popularity or whatever, but here that’s all out the window, and not caring might just elevate you to a higher level.

Here are some highlights of my college experience

-Some dude was studying for something, looking visibly stressed. His friend broke into the dorm study room in all fours and nothing but underwear acting like a goblin to both distract him and to help relieve some of his stress. Jury’s out on if it worked, but it was a nice gesture

-Some dude would just constantly steal potatoes from the mess hall and scatter them throughout campus/dorms

-Every single campus has a guitar guy. Some guitar guys wear cool footwear. Our guitar guy wore flip flops with fake turf

-It became tradition for me that after I finish a big programming project I would just pass out under a tree

-My friend at his campus would just draw a different chalk drawing every morning before school under the alias of “Sunrise”

-People passed out in the Student Center was a regular occurence. People brought CRT’s and played Melee next to these passed out students

Real talk, if you’re scared about college because it’s all new people and its a weird new experience, the biggest tip I can think of is you just have to lean into the strangeness of the new experience. If I could do it all over again, I would be even stranger than I was. It sounds cheesy, but college is really a time to find yourself.

My land lady is a 90lb 88 year old woman with 5 full grown Rottweiler boys. They sit around her when she gardens and watch her like the secret service. If you show up to pay rent they all stand up and stand between you and her.

It’s intimidating to have 5 pony size boys all staring at you until she stands up realizes it’a you and walks to you.

My favorite part is she wades through them like swamp water saying in her cute old voice ‘move’ ‘move please’ and each one she nudges to move wags his whole body at her touch and stumbles out of the way like he’s been knocked over by a truck. It gives me life paying my rent.
