(Hello! :D You've just found the primary tumblr of WolfenM! If you're looking for my sideblog for The Untamed, go here. This blog is devoted to Trickster dieties and characters, focusing on their more positive attributes (but still recognising the negative ones, as lessons of what not to do).

A Christmas Carol Aftermath: Tim

Less than a fortnight after Ebenezer Scrooge passed into the next world, Emily Cratchit fell ill. She had not been well for months, but now she could barely leave her bed. The doctor said there was nothing that could be done but pray for a miracle.

Threatened with the impending loss of his mother on the heels of the death of his dear friend, Tim Cratchit — now a fine young man, hale and healthy (save a slight limp he would forever walk with) — began to slip into despair. He spent less time at home, throwing himself into work (he was a ’prentice at the firm now run by his father and Fred). He was brief with his wife, cold to his son, and snapped at Fred when he gently suggested he take some time off to process his grief.

Ebenezer was distraught. He remembered far too well how the death of his sister had shaped his own life, and he saw echoes of his past regrets in Tim’s behaviour. One day, he voiced an idea that had been growing in his mind to Jacob.

“Couldn’t I visit him?”

Jacob sighed as if he had been expecting the question, and hadn’t looked forward to it. “Ebenezer…” he said carefully, with a gentleness anyone who had known him in life would not have recognized in him, “what happened that night was… not typical. It took years of pleading your case, of effort on Fan’s part and mine, and even then, if you hadn’t had such a large part to play in so many lives…”

“You’re the one who said…” Ebenezer frowned, trying to remember, “‘anyone working kindly in his little sphere will find his mortal life too short for his vast means of usefulness,’ isn’t that right?”

Jacob sighed again. “It is. But Ebenezer…”

“I don’t mean we’d need to visit Tim’s past and future, I just want to give him an assurance that… that death is not the end, that I am still watching over him, that—” but he stopped there, because Jacob was shaking his head forcefully. “Well, why not?” Ebenezer challenged.

“Because…” Jacob thought a long time, weighing his words, “…because it doesn’t work that way, Eb.”

“How do you know?”

Jacob huffed. “If help were so forthcoming every time a soul was in distress, don’t you think someone would have come to my aid? For that matter, why should you have grown old without intervention, if it were that easy? Don’t you think if Fan could have come to see you, she would, and saved you years of bitterness, saved the world around you years of the cruelty born of your grief?” Jacob heard the harshness in his own words and checked himself.

Ebenezer looked down at his hands, chastened. “I… you are right, of course. I just… I don’t see why.”

Jacob’s eyes softened, and he gave a small, sad smile. “Nor do I, honestly. But one thing I do know is that Tim will be fine.”

“How do you know that?”

“Ebenezer, when you were a young man, you didn’t have anyone to turn to, save myself, and lord knows I was a poor enough example.” Jacob gave a remorseful half-smile. “The lessons your father imparted were those of cruelty and fear, and those I gave you were of power and greed, and of taking from the less fortunate. But Tim… he has his father, his brothers and sisters, his wife and child, and the lessons you gave him growing up. He is surrounded by love, and examples of a different sort of power: the power of kindness, of charity, and of Hope. You taught him well; now you need to have faith in that, and in him. Do you truly believe he needs the sort of intervention that you’re suggesting?”

It was Ebenezer’s turn to sigh. “…No. No, I know him better than that. I just… I miss him, I suppose.” Jacob laid a comforting hand on his shoulder. “And… well, I miss being useful. During the last years of my life, I discovered that not only did I have a responsibility to others, but the joy of fulfilling it. And now… I’m happy, don’t mistake me! I cherish the time I spend with you, with Fan, and getting to know my mother at last. But… Jacob, I cannot express how wonderful it felt to make a difference, for the better! Can this really be all there is to being a spirit? Just watching, from a distance, unable to affect the lives of mortals?” He looked up to see Jacob beaming at him. “…What?”

“I’d been hoping you might say something like that. No, that is not all there is to being a spirit. There is so much work yet to be done, and I would be grateful to have my partner’s aid.”

“What do you mean?” Ebenezer asked, mystified but excited.

Jacob held out his hand. “Would you do me the honour of coming with me to see?”

Everyone’s starter anime is death note.

I don’t count sailor moon or dbz cuz you watched those as a kid and assumed they were cartoons.

I mean when you got “into” anime fully aware of what it was and actually became immmmmmersed in this bizarre weeb culture.

It’s usually death note.

Ah, youth. Bold of you to ignore the Gen Zs. ;)

If we're not counting stuff we watched as kids (which would have meant Battle of the Planets for some, like me, and Robotech -- which I didn't see until years later but still saw pre-Sailor Moon -- for many others), then I and my friends cut our anime fan teeth on the likes of Ranma 1/2 (and other pre-Inuyasha Takahashi anime), Akira, the original Vampire Hunter D, Fist of the North Star, Project A-Ko, and The Dirty Pair. And while I didn't get into them myself, there was Bubblegum Crisis and Evangelion. Back then, more than a decade before Death Note, the video store Suncoast had a steadily-growing "Japanimation" section.

The America-based anime fandom obviously isn't as old as the Japan-based fandom, of course, but still, we've been around a long time -- there are those who pre-date my crop, even, who, when Robotech originally aired in the US, in the 80s, were fully aware of what they were seeing. And there were probably fully-aware fans of still older fare, like Speed Racer and Astro-Boy.

So there's this tiny moment in Run BTS ep 51 where Tae is clearly not in a good mood (and if it's the reason I suspect, I can understand why), and RM reaches out and pats him on the back, and it makes me all gooey even though you can barely see it. RM is such a good leader -- like, even though Tae's mood was not addressed in the show, it's clear RM was aware of it and did what he subtly could to address it. 💗

I made a vow never to return to that cack house ever, ever again. But why? You know why. The British are a pack of classist wankers. And those fuckers expelled me from the Sherwood- From the Sherwood Club. Yes I know you have told me so many times.  What We Do in the Shadows | 3.10

I dislike how clumsy it is to share Twitter threads but here is a portion from a guy I follow (for his trans porn and monster fucking content at that) echoing a sentiment that aces, traumatized people, people with low libido, etc. can fully relate to. The rest is here and it’s absolutely worth the read.

“Sex isn’t special”

Thank you! I’ve always been fascinated by how sexuality is viewed in such a dramatic, over-criticized way when it’s just another one of those things we do in life, no different from eating, sleeping or playing.

Speaking as an aroace person, we as a society don’t really have enough conversation about willing consent as opposed to enthusiastic consent. The only time I’ve ever been able to have that conversation is in purposefully a-spec communities. Because it’s ok to only be willing to do something! You don’t have to feel like if you don’t love every second you’re doing it wrong!

In the a-spec community club I ran in college, I usually made the comparison of giving your partner a massage. Maybe they really like a foot massage, and for you it’s like ugh I don’t really like touching feet but hey, it makes my partner so happy and I want to give them the gift of that pleasant experience, so sure, I’m willing. Doesn’t mean I have to love touching feet! Or hey, maybe I do, and I’m like yeah, the thing I get out of this exchange is different than what my partner gets out of it, but we’re both enjoying ourselves and I’m glad I personally can give them this experience.

The bottom line is that the consent is willing, not that it’s enthusiastic. One kind of consent is not more or less consensual than the other.

So, what IS with the cognitive dissonance of people who both worship Capitalism, and yell at people for "buying junk / $8 coffees / ect"? Like, how does capitalism work if people DON'T spend? These same people complained that the COVID lockdowns were going to destroy businesses because people wouldn't be out buying things, and they complain that millennials don't spend enough, BUT they also LOVE to shame people for buying stuff. How can they be entitled to a consumer base and shame people for consumerism at the same time?

Tangentially, why aren't they complaining about rich people hoarding wealth instead of putting it back into the economy? Why do they refuse to acknowledge 50 years worth of evidence that trickle-down economics doesn't actually happen? When is this Monopoly-game nightmare, where a small portions of players get more and more money, and everyone else gets poorer and poorer, going to end?

When are stock holders and CEOs going to realise that they're basically killing substantial parts of their own workforces by not paying them enough or providing enough healthcare, and that's part of why they can't get / keep enough workers? Modern businesses, especially corporations, seem like giant Jenga towers that just keep getting bigger by reallocating resources, and eventually will be unsustainable.

When are stock holders and CEOS (and the bigoted among conservatives in general going) to realise that most crime generally happens when there is scarcity, and they are causing that scarcity, so they are best equipped to solve that problem, instead of them blaming the people trying to survive, and whose labour is basically being stolen by corporations? If you're barely -- or not even -- paying enough for people to have room and board with the hours you give (and you shouldn't be forcing anyone to work over 40 hours), I reckon that's only a step away from slavery. It's not a choice to work retail or cleaning jobs when a person has to take what they can get to survive, and those are the only jobs people will hire them for. If even people with a Master's degree have to take jobs that are $15/hr, does ANYONE really have options, much less those who could never afford the decent education that conservatives insist people should get if they want a real job? Why do corporations feel they are entitled to a workforce, yet the workforce is not entitled to a living wage?

Facebook PSA

Hey all, a little Social Media PSA if you have the Facebook App on your phone.

With the last update, Facebook began tracking something called ‘off-Facebook Activity’ which keeps up with all apps and browsing you do off of Facebook and collects that information with the purpose of targeting ads… which means they’re selling it to ad agencies. This includes access to any banking apps on your phone and your spending habits.

Not only is this a major breech of privacy that Facebook didn’t have to tell us about when they updated the app, it’s, of course, automatically turned on.

To turn it off, go into your Facebook app, pull up the menu from the main screen [the button with the three horizontal lines] scroll down to security and privacy, find ‘Off-Facebook Activity’ and hit the button that lets you manage your history to see all the apps it’s been collecting from. From there, you can clear the information it’s already collected, and there will be a button regarding ‘Future activity’ where you can turn the ‘feature’ off, at which point Facebook with give you an ‘ARE YOU SURE YOU DON’T WANT US COLLECTING YOUR INFORMATION TO SELL YOU THINGS???’ screen. Yes, yes you are sure. Because this is disgusting.

Facebook made this super hard to find, so I’ve written up instructions for how I got through it (on my app - I don’t know if there are other versions where it’s different):

From Facebook, go to the Menu by clicking on the three horizontal lines on the top right of the screen.

Scroll down to the bottom and select the Settings & Privacy drop-down menu.

Then select Settings (the first option under the drop-down).

This will take you to a screen showing multiple headers with lists of links under them

Scroll down to Your Facebook Information and select Off-Facebook Activity.

The next page has a short explanation of Off-Facebook Activity. Click Manage Your Off-Facebook Activity after the What You Can Do header.

This will take you to a screen with an option to Clear History (which I recommend). To actually turn off this feature, you will have to click the three dots at the top right of the screen and select the Manage Future Activity option that pops up.

This will take you to a page explaining in more detail what they’re doing. Select the Manage Future Activity at the bottom of the page.

THEN you can finally select the toggle to turn off Future Off-Facebook Activity.

If it’s glowing blue with the circle on the right side, it’s active, and if it’s gray with the circle on the left side, it’s off.

Just went and checked this out and yikes on a stick

Yuck. I just did this.

I don’t have a facebook, but this is still Important!!!

by the way it’s not just the facebook app on your phone. i’ve never used the facebook app, i only ever access the site through a browser, and i still had a bunch of things tracking me when i went to look and turn it off.

this is the article i used to help me find it, and wow it is very difficult to find and turn it off

Lilo and Stitch Socialise at the Haunted Mansion by WolfenM

My mother, who died in April, was a big fan of both Lilo and Stitch and the Haunted Mansion. I started this for her in 2017, sketching out the foreground elements, but had never gotten around to drawing the mansion itself. I'm so sorry, Mom. ;_; Acrylic on canvas, with a *little* post-work in Photoshop. Lilo, Stitch, the Hitchhiking Ghosts, Madame Leota, the Hellhound, and The Haunted Mansion all ©Disney.
