Something I often find myself contemplating is the tie between Air and Angels and Demons.

Both beings, when taking on a form which humans can perceive, at least according to Renaissance teachings, use Air to do so. Their bodies are described as “visual metaphors” as they take on these bodies to communicate something to humans - for instance, in my favorite recount of an experience with a demon, there was a demon following a young man around for unknown reasons, but he wasn’t hurting the man, instead he was doing his bidding. He took on the form of a butler, a teacher, and even a nobleman at one point, specifically while in front of a priest. The belief is that he was attempting to communicate, literally, that he had noble intentions.

That’s why I prefer the term “visual metaphor,” as Armando Maggi calls it, rather than symbol, because it so accurately captures that these beings are using their bodies to communicate something, though it’s beyond verbal communication. And I find it fascinating that Air specifically is the means of doing it.

Also, “demon” came from “daemon,” and reading about daemon in the ancient sense is fascinating. For example, Plato claimed that Socrates had a “private demon” who would speak to him and give him guidance throughout his life. In the ancient perception, daemons weren’t evil, like the word “demon” typically insinuates, but they seemed to be a part of everyone, like a piece of their spirit, or the spirit of another. An entity of Air whose purpose is to communicate is really fascinating to me.

In addition, this all becomes more interesting, at least in my opinion, when one then looks at Libra and its ties to “Lucifer” through Venus, and the pentagram, and so on. Going back to the story of the young man and the demon who was following him around, a lot of people interpreted that as the demon reflecting the young man’s interest in men; it’s a manifestation of his romantic and sexual feelings. These beings of pure air reflect human desires back at us, in a sense. In another account, one man who summoned a demon first had it appear as a beast, to reveal its true form, then the being took on the form of a dog in hopes of communicating loyalty and service, and finally the demon took on the form of a beautiful woman - what the man desired. When speaking of demons, there’s often an association with lust and sex, but in reality, I think these accounts show something much more Venusian in that it’s a balance between sex, lust, and care, but also partnership.

Angels, too, are depicted as taking on these forms of air - it’s clearly not something evil, or specific to entities with evil intentions. And when they take on these forms, it’s almost always because they’re seeking to help humans in some way. This could be interpreted as an act of love, too

There’s a line from In the Company of Demons that I think captures yet another concept tying these entities with Air: “… We understand that the spirits have spoken when nature becomes suddenly and temporarily perverted (for instance, multiple suns or moons appear in the sky, or the image of a dead friend walks into our room and lies next to us). It is a fact that when the spirits speak, reality is somehow suspended.”

While it certainly references physical reality, I think it also could be interpreted as mental or perceived reality, which is also very Mercurian. It’s as if logic gives way to something beyond, as the fabric of “reality” is shifted and manipulated to, again, communicate.

In relation to Gemini, the 3rd House, and Mercury, all of this could be perceived as relating to the mind, perception, and, of course, communication. In relation to Libra, the 7th House, and Venus, it could be perceived as love, caring, and reaching out to and/or uniting with others through physicality. In relation to Aquarius, the 11th House, and Uranus, it could be interpreted as relating to inspiration, enlightenment, and the power of communication and/or the power of groups (the angels gifting knowledge to groups, the demons providing service to others, etc.).

Retrograde planets

When a planet is in retrograde, it appears to be moving backwards as seen from the earth. If you were born with a planet in retrograde, its energies will be more delayed or internalized. People are said to not have been able to express that planets themes healthily in early childhood, they internalized those energies rather than externalizing them. Planets in retrograde are more reflected, you cant put them out immediately. Ultimately though, the qualities can be more refined, too. I am going to talk about progressed Mercury! Progressed planets are mostly useful for predictive astrology and helps show how you’ve grown in certain aspects of your life. Progressed planets are when your planet(s) actually moves through the signs, houses, or other natal planets. Progressed Mercury rules over communication, learning, and decision making. Ways to guess rising signs - Part one

By identifying how the elements and modalities of the signs might play into real life, we can help narrow down the guess of a person’s rising sign. It’s impossible to know for sure unless you have their birth certificate. However, having two options for their rising sign for example is better than twelve or not knowing at all.
