Watching the reactions to Roger Corman's death and it seems hard to explain who he was to people who don't know him. "So he was a producer of shitty b-movies?" Yes! And he's responsible for the careers of dozens of directors, actors, and other filmmakers and is pretty inarguably one of the single most important people in modern film. By making shitty b-movies

In a time where studios micromanage everything filmmakers do (and that started all the way back in the 80s - the early to mid 70s were more an oasis from the norm than the norm in terms of freedom) it's amazing to remember that there was a guy who went "here's some money to make a movie. Don't go over it, make sure you include the quota of violence and sex, otherwise go nuts", and also the guy he was saying that to was like, Martin Scorsese

I think we need more "unnecessary" gore in horror movies actually I think people should explode into a giant mess of blood and tissue and viscera during random scenes in horror movies

Good point actually there should be gore and blood explosions in keeping up with the kardashians

I really deeply hate how the correct statement "using man-hating as a cover for transmisogyny is awful and you need to be able to recognize when that's being used as a dogwhistle" has somehow evolved into "misandry is real and that's why terfs are wrong" like no I don't think it is. Can we please retire Not All Men I can't do this

Bioessentialism (which is transphobic and also racist) is when you claim people are innately Biologically Determined to be either Good or Evil. That's nazi shit. Operating on that logic is why you'll see terfs doing straight up phrenology. It's also not the same thing as women venting about the very real ways men treat them in our society. Which, I might remind you, trans women aren't men, and it's weird to assume every time someone says men they're including trans women. Especially when you remember trans women experience misogyny, on account of being women. Sometimes trans women are even feminists, and not in a liberal girlboss way. Can we all just use our brains a little

part of being an ally to trans men is not being a dick to cis men for their appearance btw

the short trans men hear you. the trans men with bottom growth—or who are post-phalloplasty—hear your bad jokes about small dicks. the trans men undergoing hrt who are losing their hair hear you talk shit about bald spots.

also, hot take, you should care about not hurting random cis men in addition to not hurting trans men. like just because some guy is being an asshole online doesn’t mean the thousands of young boys reading your comments about someone with their same acne deserved it. i don’t care what your reason is, even if you think someone is bad enough to warrant being bullied, who gave you permission to hurt the innocent bystander?

hey y’all should spread this version bc some people need to hear this context

Trinity College Cambridge, the University of Cambridge's wealthiest constituent college, has decided to divest from all arms companies, Middle East Eye can reveal. This came after MEE revealed in February that Trinity had £61,735 ($78,089) invested in Israel's largest arms company, Elbit Systems, which produces 85 percent of the drones and land-based equipment used by the Israeli army. MEE also reported that the college had millions of dollars invested in other companies arming, supporting and profiting from Israel's war on Gaza. In response to this report, on 28 February the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP), a UK-based rights group, issued a legal notice to Trinity College warning that its investments could make it potentially complicit in Israeli war crimes. The ICJP indicated in its legal notice that "officers, directors and shareholders at the college may be individually criminally liable if they maintain their investments in arms companies that are potentially complicit in Israeli war crimes and crimes against humanity". MEE has learnt from three well-informed sources close to Trinity's student union that the college council, responsible for major financial and other decisions, voted to remove Trinity's investments from arms companies in early March. According to these sources, the college decided not to announce that it would divest from arms companies after an activist defaced a 1914 portrait of Lord Arthur Balfour - who authored the infamous Balfour Declaration - inside the college on 8 March.

when I see something dated 2019 I think “oh that’s not too long ago” and then I remember that 2019 was not only five years ago but those five years have somehow contained several lifetimes

This gif is outrageous

 ■ The so-called “blood explosion” which punctuates the conclusion of Akira Kurosawa’s 1962 movie Sanjuro remains one of the most memorable and influential special effects in film history. Production designer Yoshiro Muraki would later recall this scene was filmed in a single take. No such effect had ever been attempted before, as movies of the time rarely showed violence with graphic detail. Filled with uncertainty, Muraki worried the blood spray he’d rigged up wouldn’t impress Kurosawa, so he added an extra 30 pounds of pressure to the fluid pump. At the moment the pump was activated, the additional pressure caused the compressor hose attached to actor Tatsuya Nakadai to blow a coupling which created a slight, unintentional delay before the fake blood began to spray, and caused a much larger gush of fluid than planned. It sprayed so powerfully Nakadai claimed it almost lifted him off the ground. His heart sinking, as he believed the delay and over-pressure had ruined the effect, Muraki nervously glanced at director Akira Kurosawa, but Kurosawa only nodded in approval.

“oh god i fucked this up”

“yoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOO”

And to think this is so iconic that “two dudes clash, there’s a beat, then one dies incredibly violently” is just a must-have for action in anime

Its crazy to think that this iconic visual that has been so ubiquitous in pop culture for so long despite that the source material barely being known by people all came from actors staying in character thru an FX malfunction.

Sanjuro and its predecessor, Yojimbo, are both available FOR FREE on The Internet Archive! They’re KICK ASS movies and you should watch them!! You have no reason not to!!!

If you like anime, if you like Westerns, if you like samurai or cowboy tropes at all, you should really really watch some of Akira Kurosawa’s films! Rashomon is also very good and has had a really profound impact on modern film and storytelling!!

POV: you made a post targeted towards trans men

“Hard to send to a girl I know.” Then send it anyway. Send it and say “hey I know this post is targeted towards trans men - but I think the information in the post would be helpful for you to know.”

Y’all know that cis people can just . Follow advice that’s intended for trans people but is applicable in their situation , right?

What if I told you people are mad at me bc of this post

I’m a woman married to another woman (i.e. 🌈🦄🏳️‍🌈 hella gay). Instagram figured out I was a lesbian and served me that content for a while, but then it figured out I was married so now it serves me content for me and my “husband” (insta algorithm believe in the ‘sanctity of marriage’ or smth)

TONS of reels like “which frog on a leaf is your bf” or “does anyone’s husband do THIS?”

Do you know what I do? I send that shit to my wife because it’s still fucking relatable.

And in case you’re curious about which frog on a leaf my bf is she’s this one:

BIG SILLY?

this is actually the coolest thing i've heard in a minute. there's something really reassuring about it, honestly. that there's a place in nature, carved out by these creatures, and that even with hundreds of years of separation, they slot back into these spots where they're meant to be
