Hellenismos in Application: A Religion For Modern Times
Welcome to Hellenismos in Application!
If you made it to this page, it’s likely that you came here intentionally. If you didn’t, then allow me to explain several things.
Hellenismos is a name for the religion which worships the Gods of ancient Greece. That’s right: Zeus, Hera, and all of the rest are still worshiped today, though their following greatly depleted with the introduction of Christianity in Roman times.
On the myths: Contrary to popular belief, most modern Hellenics (and even the ancient ones) don’t take the myths literally, but believe the stories to be metaphorical language describing far more difficult to comprehend concepts. Hellenics almost universally are truth-seekers: We hold scientific findings to be true (unless we’re trying to disprove them) and spend a great deal of time discussing philosophical matters.
On the Maxims: Any given Hellenic will likely be able to tell you about the Delphic Maxims. Given to the Seven Sages by the god Apollo, these one-hundred-forty-seven laws revolve around seven main points: Moderation, wisdom, family, duty, self-discipline, reverence, and society. These rules guide our lives.
On liberalism: Hellenic philosophy teaches open-mindedness on a large scale. We firmly believe in the equality of sexes and races. We also actively support their agreement with sexuality equality. Many also believe that all religions are equally correct within the person who believes them, and that every religious path has the potential to lead to enlightenment; this leaves us no room to judge others for their varying religions. Vegetarianism - along with the philosophy of the equality of every sentient species - is often practiced among us.
In short, Hellenismos is a religion which is centralized upon the ideas of wisdom, open-mindedness, and community. No doubt there are several bad apples (what religion doesn’t have them!), but as a general rule, you’ll find no group of people so concerned with justice and equality as we are.
