okay but here's the real commentary from this episode:
we've talked a lot about how Dean has been conditioned from an early age to play bait on hunts, and this isn't nearly as extreme an example as setting himself up to get assaulted by vampires or flutter his eyelashes into the cabs of suspected monster truckers, but for all that it's not as disturbing as some other examples the series presents us with in terms of content, the context— juxtaposed here with Bobby, who has been playing the role of Dean Mirror all episode, who aggressively and enthusiastically hopes for the soul eater to stay the hell away— makes it stand out all the more starkly in contrast.
Bobby isn't a coward and Dean isn't being reckless here; they're just playing a similar narrative role but using extremely different strategies.
