hey, i know i’ve not been around much, so i feel like, awkward about asking for mutual aid in light of that, but i’m in a bit of a bind

due to circumstances beyond my control, in July, i’ll be losing a source of monthly income amounting to about £200. this is a huge problem since my income from benefits is barely adequate as is and cost of living keeps rising.

while ideally i’d set the goal at £1200 to cover the loss for at least the rest of the year, that seems like too much to ask rn.

so i’m not setting a goal for now. but … i really need help affording bills. i’ve suspended my efforts to boost the GFM for new furniture in light of more pressing bills.

i’ve cut down my expenses as much as i can. i already can barely afford to eat and due to my limited mobility, food pantries aren’t really an option.

i keep forgetting to mention, but i got diagnosed with sleep apnea and got a cpap machine, and it's mostly working fine except for the times that semi-conscious iscah wakes up after like, three hours and goes, "welp, that's enough of that, i think" and takes off the mask. i've been using it for almost a month now but only like half the nights count because of that.

btw: if you reblog this poll, feel free to explain your answer in the tags or the reblog!

Correct Answer: No Role At All

jesus does not play a role in judaism. that includes both the tanach, which is arguably our primary religious text, and the daily religious/cultural practice of judaism. he certainly plays a role in jewish history—largely a negative one, as his followers have persecuted jews for multiple centuries. there is evidence that he may appear briefly in the talmud, which is a compilation of jewish legal commentaries and teachings that modern jewish scholars study throughout their lives. however, this is not a commonly-known fact amongst jews (i myself didn't know this beforehand), nor do regular practicioners ever discuss him in torah study or services. (if any talmudic scholars want to comment on this, absolutely feel free to!)

nothing described above constitutes a role in judaism. one trend i saw in tags was the assumption that, since jews often engage in scholarly and/or religious debate, we likely discuss jesus amongst ourselves. we don't lol; if there's a consensus about anything in judaism, it's probably the jesus thing. there is slight variance amongst individual jews; for example, some consider him a wise rabbi/teacher with good ideas, while for others he's just some jewish guy who probably existed and caused problems.

for every non-jew who believed he had a role, i urge you to reflect on this assumption. where did it come from? who gavey you this information initially—a jew or a gentile? why might a gentile source want you to believe we accept jesus as a prophet or prominent figure? i also urge anyone who grew up christian (or in a christian culture) to reflect on any emotional reaction you had to learning this information. were you shocked or uncomfortable? what do you feel about jews who don't like jesus at all, no matter how "good" his ideas might be?

while jesus doesn't play a large role in judaism, christianity plays a large role in antisemitism. this may also be new information to you. if you feel shame or guilt about your reaction and/or not knowing, i gently urge you to unpack that before engaging in any more conversations—if either emotion is the driving force of your allyship, you will burn out. and here's me talking specifically, because i can't speak for all jews lmao: you don't need to confess or repent. you just need to show up and trust the perspectives of jewish people about both our religion/culture and experiences with antisemitism. (you'll notice that all the sources i've included above and below are from jewish organizations!) that's the first step, and i appreciate any goyim who take that step and keep going afterwards.

Results: Quick Analysis:

thank you to everyone who participated! i was actually blown away by how seriously folks took this question; i've been joking to friends that i haven't ever seen this many goyim be normal towards jews LMAO + genuinely curious to learn more about our religion, culture, and history. the bar is wildly low, but it's still cool to see it surpassed. and see an absolute torah study happening in those tags.

very quick analysis: the results were both relieving and worrying. relieving because most people got the right answer! worrying because, well, nearly half of the respondents did not. this isn't a verifiably solid sample size by any means, but that's still roughly 44% of 44,027 respondents, not including everyone who voted "something else." (some of those answers veered from "very wrong" to "techically right," so it'd take a bit to accurately quantify).

that being said, the three primary wrong answers are not equally wrong. there are some interesting nuances to oberve here, and i plan to do so in a much longer post (hopefully) later this week. however, if you're interested in a quick explanation/breakdown of the wrong answers, click the read more below.

A 28-year-old motorcyclist died in Washington State on Friday afternoon because a dipshit Tesla driver rear-ended him at speed. A Snohomish man, 56, was commuting in his 2022 Tesla Model S when he activated the car’s camera-based advanced driver assist system and according to his statements to police, began looking through his phone. With nobody paying attention to the car’s actions, the Tesla software ignored Jeffrey Nissen on his motorcycle and continued on at speed. The car rear-ended the two-wheeler, Nissen was flung from the bike, and his life ended pinned underneath the electric car, where he was still lodged when police arrived to the scene.

Tesla claims another life.

Reminder that even if you are personally aware of how dangerous Tesla vehicles are and vow to never ride in one, they can still kill you.

My own driving habits have changed around them. I always give Teslas extra space, avoid following them directly, and expect them to stop or swerve suddenly without notice.

Cannot count the times I've pulled up next to a Tesla at freeway speed, noticed the driver playing on their phone. Tap the horn. They look up with surprise.

Please, don't be that guy.

common myths about migraines (AKA if you get headaches regularly, please seek treatment for migraines)

"i don't have migraines because while i get them several times a week, it's only when i am hungry or dehydrated."

those are probably migraines. thirst, hunger, sleep disturbances, or any disruption to routine are common migraine triggers.

"my headaches are specifically barometric related, i get them when the weather/altitude changes."

those are probably migraines. barometric pressure is a common migraine trigger.

"i get headaches all the time but ibuprofen gets rid of them so they can't be migraines."

that's not true. ibuprofen works great at relieving migraine pain for many people.

"my consistent headaches are tension headaches. i feel them originate in my neck/shoulders."

those are probably migraines. muscle tension is a common migraine trigger.

if you are regularly getting headaches (once a week or more), you are likely getting migraines. in fact, a good rule of thumb if you're consistently getting headaches is to treat them as migraines until you can rule out migraines. that's how common "chronic headache = migraine" actually is.

migraines are a neurological disorder wherein pain is one symptom. pain is often the MAIN symptom, and the most noticeable symptom, which can make diagnosis tricky. other symptoms of migraine include:

  • fatigue
  • nausea/vomiting
  • digestive issues
  • visual disturbances (auras)
  • sensitivity to light and/or sound
  • mood changes
  • brain fog/cognitive changes
  • ringing in the ears
  • dizziness/vertigo
  • numbness/weakness on one side of the body

this list is NOT complete, but is a starting point. i really like the comparison to a hangover. if you generally feel hungover when you get a headache (without having consumed alcohol), that's a classic migraine presentation.

so many people suffer from migraine and don't even know it, so they aren't able to advocate for themselves to get treatment. there are great new migraine treatments on the market! if you're able, please seek treatment for your migraines. a better quality of life is possible.

Bought my uncle a burger and milkshake in exchange for letting me disrupt the holiest day of the week, NFL Sunday Football, so I could install a Pi-hole and free the household of ads...the thing abt the specific boomers I live with is they told me not to trust people on the Internet but they do not understand the algorithm or online advertising and think that Facebook has their best interests at heart. And every time I have tried to explain to them that no, blorbo from my dashboard is not selling my kidneys on the dark web but Google from your capitalism is definitely selling your web searches to every advertising company on the planet, they think I am paranoid. How could their personal friend Mark Zuckerberg want anything bad to happen to them etc. I am fighting battles I did not know existed!!!

Update I have had Pi-Hole successfully installed for two (2) hours and have since learned that 40% of the web traffic in this household went to advertisements. FORTY FUCKING PERCENT. We live in hell. This is the greatest gift I have ever given my family that they will not understand or acknowledge or feel any gratitude for.

Update #2: it was rising all night but the number it finally settled on was...60%. 60% of the web traffic in this household went to advertisements. I can't tell if this high number is bc I live in Silicon Valley and probably am subject to the Algorithmic Internet in ways people outside of Silicon Valley are not or it is normal to have 2/3rds of your web traffic be ads, but it did make me set up a recurring donation of the EFF lmfao.

Okay I have had multiple people ask, so here are the useful websites that me and Beryl used to muddle our way through:

Using Pi-hole and Raspberry Pi (on the Raspberry Pi website, really good overview of what Pi-hole does)

Tumblr-archived Twitter thread about one household's experience with Pi-hole (this is what sold me on it. Also the tweets were published in 2022 and Pi-hole is actively being developed, so I think some of the teething problems he mentioned might have cleared up or are at least being addressed.)

Pi-hole website (gives broad strokes of the software and imho is not actually that helpful, however this proves that I am not making shit up)

Pi-hole documentation (read prerequisites carefully, you do NOT need the newest model of Raspberry Pi to run this thing!! You don't even need a Raspberry Pi at all, you can run it on a bunch of Linux systems however I'm very stupid when it comes to Linux and when my options are install and learn a whole ass new OS or spend $$ on a Raspberry Pi and hook it up to my TV with a wired mouse and keyboard I will unfortunately be spending money)

You guys can ask me questions if you want but I guarantee I will not know the answers bc I don't know shit about fuck, I just followed the directions and reaped the rewards. It did take us 2 hours to set up bc I'm bad at following directions (and it's kind of complicated if you've been out of the software game for a while like I have), and you do have to be sososo brave about fucking around with your internet provider's configuration. So make sure you eat before you do it!! However it has been so worth it for me so far, given that now all my devices at home are running faster and I'm not seeing any ads while web browsing. We will see what complaints my family comes up with, but I love it so far.

Also!! if you've never heard of Raspberry Pi, which I realize are not all of my followers are lost in the Silicon Valley sauce so you might not have, here's is their website and their page for using Raspberry Pi at home.

(And here is the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit that fights for digital privacy, free speech, and innovation, if you, like me, were presented with cold hard data about your personal internet usage and suddenly realized that our internet is fully a dystopia. haha.)
