[[Eye of the Storm]] - Closed for red-supremacy

{ ♔ } Stupid. This is simply stupid. What is? This whole campaign, this cold tent but especially this part of the country. Why does it need to be do damn cold? At least they’re having a fire in their tent. Together with his elder brother he sits close to it, trying to catch some of it’s warmth while he had wrapped his arms firmly around him. Just like this he should eventually feel a bit warmer right? Seriously, where are his warmer clothes when he needs them…?
Honestly, he was looking forward at this at first. It wasn’t the first time he was ordered to go on a campaign together with Koumei although it doesn’t happen that often. For him it’s just another opportunity; to show that he can handle things on his own and isn’t as stupid as most think he is. It’s just that he wants to show both his brothers that he’s worthy to stand at their side. Most important: to help them with their dream. And even though he is sometimes worried that this might not work out, he still tries. It’s important for them, isn’t it?
‘’Why?’’
Image
As he finds himself somewhat surprised he first stares stubborn at his older half-brother. Not wanting to get out of the position that was keeping him a bit warm. Not much later he still did so. Wondering what his brother might want from him. It’s not like they’re going to do anything around this hour right? Besides wasn’t he just close enough in case he wants to discuss something?

Why. The stubborn hesitation on his brothers face wasn’t exactly unexpected. He was well aware that the younger hated when they were sent together on campaigns, as though it was some sort of shot at his ability to handle such a thing on his own. Though as the storm raged angrily outside their tent, the older Prince had little care for Kouha’s pride.

He wasn’t exactly in the talkative mood, the cold that filled the tent had caused his already lethargic state to only worsen and as Kouha refused to move he simply took the matter into his own hands.

Shifting from his spot at the fire, he moved lazily along the ground until he was settled behind his brother, letting his larger body envelope him into a cocoon of heat. Lowering his arms he let them wrap with ease around Kouha’s small frame, lowering his head to rest his chin on the mess of red hair below as the light dancing off the fire illuminated the shade so close to his own.

“Because I refuse to let your stubborn nature get you sick” he said simply, letting crimson pools stare into the fire as he just held his brother in a way reminiscent of when they were much younger; when Koumei felt a need to protect the other from the world despite knowing Kouha could handle anything it threw at him.

“The storm does not look like it will let up any time soon. It might be best if we slept here by the fire tonight, I will make sure I keep it stoked all night” He promised, wishing his own emaciated body had more heat to give, more to keep his brother safe from the howling winds and piercing snow outside the walls of their tent. Were his end to come in quiet slumber as cold claimed him so that his brother would be warm, then he would see no more a fitting end.  Of course he knew they were hardly at risk of hypothermia that night, but the sentiment stood. He rarely slept as it was, to sacrifice a night to stoke the fire for Kouha was like batting an eye.

[[Timeless]] - Closed for Kouennii

Kouen spent the next few hours seated at his desk, writing letters and working through papers that had to be done that day. It was quite a while until he was done with all those things, but then he could turn to those things that interested him more. He stood and fetched the scroll he had just started the night before, a small smile on his lips as he started to read. History had always been his passion, and it was his goal to learn as much about the world and the world of Alma Torran as he possibly could. He wanted it to satisfy his own craving for knowledge, but also to accumulate enough knowledge and power to finally defeat that woman. Lady Gyokuen. He knew that something was wrong with her, something was off since even before his cousins died. He couldn’t quite pin it down just what it was, but she wasn’t the same as before. More like… a completely different person.
Image
When he finally heard something stirring in his bet he looked up, and he couldn’t help but to feel a little warm inside, seeing his little brother sleepy and confused like that. It felt a little like back when they were still children, sharing a room and spending half the night teasing each other. He could see him blushing, and he quickly shook his head at the apology.
“Koumei, you know you need your rest, you get much too little sleep anyway… I just couldn’t leave you there on the bench, you wouldn’t have been able to move your neck for the next week had you slept there for another while..” He put down his scroll and gave a little sigh. “When is the last time you slept a full night, brother? Or took the time to look after your hair? You need to learn to look after yourself.”
He pushed one of the two cups of tea on his desk over to the opposite side where another chair was standing, nodding at it to invite his brother over to join him at the table.

“My sleep isn’t important brother, not when there is work to be done for your benefit” The second prince was quick to respond, as though a speech he had recited time and time again in a useless attempt to justify his sleeping habits; or lack-thereof.

Shifting in his brother’s bed, Koumei shifted to allow his feet to dangle off the side, getting his balance on the floor beneath himself. The questions that left Kouen’s lips were ones that gave him pause. Those inquiries were loaded and they both knew it. Closing heavy lidded eyes he had to think, trying to find dates and times for his actions, though he wasn’t as discomposed as one should be that he was having a hard time recalling what most would consider basic everyday necessities. Letting out a low sigh at being forced to think more than he wanted to after just awaking; the man searched his mind trying to pinpoint the last time he had taken to his own bed at a reasonable hour and slept for what might be considered ‘acceptable’ lengths all in one single shot.

Image

“…I returned from the campaign you sent me on about 5 days ago.” He started, pulling himself to stand as he made the short trip across the room to drop into the chair across from the older Ren. “I believe I had a nap the day that I arrived in on the site, or the day after, I can not exactly remember. I slept before I started putting together the strategy you requested about 3 days ago, although I had an hour nap last night around 3 am when my face fell very unceremoniously onto my desk and I was too otiose to move and allowed myself a slight rest… As for my hair, I am afraid I can not remember when I last brushed it, but I do know it was in my quarters so it was before the campaign…” he explained, his brow furrowed his in his attempt to recall what he was being asked. “I don’t understand why this is relevant information to waste your valuable time with”

[[ My Brother’s Keeper]] - Closed for Yaojii

Reirei kept on walking as she listened fervently to the second prince. Hearing him out more made Reirei clear her head a little so that she was able to think objectively. As usual, prince Koumei was right and if she ever wanted to take care of her charge properly she would have to be less emotional about her duties and be more rational on what actually needs to be done.
Slowly, the servant mage dared to quicken her pace a bit so that she might walked closer to the tall man and get a better hearing of his advice. She also wanted to impart him more of her experiences with dealing with the youngest prince and hear his thoughts about that too.
Image
“You are absolutely correct, master Koumei. I now realize that I put my heart too much on Kouha-sama that I sometimes fail to see what her really needs rather than what he simply wants. Actually what really happened in the Tenzan plateau was Kouha-sama stating he was bored then heading out of the campsite to look around and alleviate his boredom. Also he refused to drink lady Hakuei’s warm horse milk because he didn’t like the taste. So I recognize now I must change my ways in order to look after him better especially in your steed, your highness.”
The servant mage wasn’t sure if her unwarranted opinion would earn her another scolding from the older man but she felt those were things he needed to hear so that he would have a better grasp on how their household functions most of the time which usually means simply following Kouha’s capriciousness.

Frankly, none of what Reirei told him came as any surprise. Between his brother taking off on his own, to refusing to drink what their sister had sent along  for his health... It all rang true to the young princes nature. He knew he shouldn't be so harsh on the woman, after all he was grateful that his brother’s household was filled with those who genuinely cared for him, that he was in the care of those who didn’t see their servitude as simply a job; but as a privilege to be at the beck and call of someone the held to such a high honour...

Letting a low sigh fall from his lips the second prince ran a hand through his unruly hair, trying to collect his words once more as even his own inner monolouge was rife with contradictions.

Image

“Please do not misunderstand me” he started turning crimson eyes to stare down at the woman walking at his side.  “I am nothing if not grateful that my brother is in the care of those who truly care about his well being and treat him with respect... I also understand that my approach to dealing with him might not mirror what would work for yourself. For example, were I on the campaign and he refused to drink his milk I would simply have done what Kouen has done to me; sat on his chest and forced it down his throat... Though I am aware that such action wouldn’t work for you. That being said, I wish to help you find a way to treat him still with the love and respect you wish to express but not allowing him to be so reckless in the future. If you will allow me to intervene in such a manner that is”

[[Sleepless]] - Closed for blood-n-shudders

A very welcomed arm sneaked around Kouha and pulled him closer. The smaller of the two brothers exhaled relaxed into the motion and moved along, snuggled close and rested his head on the other’s shoulder.
Fears and company of the right people were weird. Sometimes it were the people that scared Kouha deep in his core, and sometimes it was the lack of them. Most times though it needed to be the right people at the right time for that Kouha would allow them to hug him. It wasn’t that he disliked hugs themselves, but more that he grew restless very fast. He’d move and wiggle, bump against limbs, smell the person all the time, accidentally pull at either’s hair and just make the whole experience not nice.
With Koumei however, it was almost always good. As soon as Kouha leaned against his older brother he’d relax and calm down. The more he nuzzled into clothes that were probably wide enough to fit them both at the same time, the more his breathing slowed down and even his heartbeat became slow but strong. Even if they weren’t talking, concentrating on and listening to his own heartbeat would be enough then to keep his mind in reality and not drift off into fears.
image
He hummed low and waited for exactly that effect to happen. “How do you do that?” Kouha mumbled, “Get along with so little sleep … It’s driving me crazy lately.” It was indeed so weird. In his room, protected from weather and anyone who might want to harm him in his sleep, he wasn’t able to rest. But here under the starry sky, together with his brother, the world could end around them and he’d sleep soundly.

How do you do that... Get along with so little sleep.

                                It’s driving me c r a z y

He was unsure when it had started; walking a fine line between narcolepsy and insomnia was like something out of a joke a bard might tell to earn a laugh and a tip from the crowd and yet... For Ren Koumei it was all too real. With his younger years a strict schedule of refinement and rules; Koumei had cracked before even half the weight had ever come to rest on his shoulders. He preferred to live in the shadows, and in his nearly ethereal invisibility his own niche formed. He had eyes and ears everywhere. His insomnia left him wandering the dimly lit halls in silence, bearing witness to every fight, every shady deal, every affair, and every illicit act the family tried to bury from view... While he flourished in the underground labs of the palace, his existence as the second prince was something he had no grasp for... But perhaps he was simply trying to get a firm hold with hands that had long ago been greased.

With nights on end deprived of sleep; and yet days where his only escape from his own demons and burdens was simply to allow his eyes to close and desperate refuge stolen at the worst of hours... His mind was anything but rested and his body; his skin, his posture, his health... Had all suffered the physical toll of such a life.

Crazy? No crazy was too simple a word, to umbrella for what Koumei allowed to take place inside his mind. Genius came hand in hand with lackadaisical indifference and the prince was hardly ignorant to his faults

Though none of that mattered, with Kouha nestled against his side, the perpetual fog that drifted through Koumei’s very thoughts cleared. Though his place was lost in a turbulent sea that he was still trying to navigate; Kouha was a beacon, a shining reminder that his job first and foremost above all else was to be a brother, to keep his younger safe, keep him comforted... Kouha was everything that mattered.

image

“It’s been my whole life...” He explained softly, shifting his arms to get a better hold around his brother. “I’ve grown accustomed to it... Besides, someone needs to be awake in the wee hours should you find yourself victim to nightmares” He chuckled, offering the younger a rare smile.

“I was going to send Seishuu to wake you up if you didn’t show yourself within the hour.”
…Mostly because the servants were far too lenient with his brother, easily being brushed aside with a wave of a sleepy hand if Koumei decided to doze for a while longer. Seishuu, at least, got the job done–even if it was one he undertook with a grumble to make Kin do it the next time around.

“I would appreciate if you didn’t esteemed brother” The second prince mumbled, lifting a hand to try and fight away the yawn that pulled from his features as he shuffled out of his quarters, robes askew as hair fell into his face.

“He is so coarse and harsh, it’s hardly a pleasant wake up; makes me far too stressed and needing to just go back to sleep....”

He seemed to relax. “Really? Thanks.” Smiling, Judar looked through the shelves. “So you’re one of the princes…if memory serves me correctly, you must be Koumei?” He glanced over at the other. According to the information…yes this should be Koumei.

“That is correct. I suppose I should apologize for not joining in the flock of those who came to greet you but I saw no benefit in greeting a Magi that is of no use to me; as he already has his candidates chosen; and an apology once more if that was impolite”  The prince said simply, finally lifting his eyes from the scroll before him to get a proper look at the younger man.

“Though it seems you’ve done your research on our royal family; interesting...”

An encouraging nod was giving to the young boy, waiting for him to step closer. He had half a mind to simply pull Koumei onto his lap, but he didn’t want to startle him. So he would wait patiently for him to come to Hakuyuu on his own.
“Of course you can. I’ve heard good things from                      your tutors, you’re a smart boy. Come here, we can                     read over this documents together.”

The young prince hesitated, averting crimson eyes at the praise from his older cousin. It wasn’t often he heard such kind words his relatives and the compliment left him hesitating... Though curiosity won out over reluctance and Koumei found himself closing the distance, moving up onto his toes to get a better look at the documents spread across the wooden surface of the desk.

“Are these for trade?” He asked, glancing up at the older male, genuine inquisitiveness burning in tired crimson pools.

“If I broke the coffee pot you can be certain it would be the equivalent to nuclear disaster.” He’s sitting with a cup in hand now, sipping at it as if truly made from gold.

“I suppose that is fair... And I would like to imagine that you have more intelligence to believe throwing a coffee pot over your shoulder would increase fertility...”

[[  I was informed by enough people that my blog has started to malfunction and hide the reblog button so I am going to be doing a full theme overhaul; if you try to go to my theme and it looks off, my apologies.
