“SHUT it. you’re making it embarrassing for me.” guren frowned, lips slipping into a thin line. as much as he had the habit of shovelling all the suffering on his shoulders, guren did not want to see anyone else do the same, especially if it were jumin. he’d had enough trouble dealing with the rumours and criticism that surrounded him because he’d decided to befriend guren, but that did not mean that jumin could freely beat himself up as he wished. wordlessly, guren sat down beside the other on the bench, glancing away from the other. “that’s the last thing i want to hear from you. you and i both know you’re a capable leader. sometimes, being strict is necessary when you have to take care of brats that don’t listen. and... at least your father is still alive. that’s a hell lot of things that you should be glad for.”

SO I don’t remember that being decimated a few seconds ago. Me?” Apparently they had a lot to work on in regards to his Seraph Gene. “Tell me Guren, can my body hold out more tries today? It’s not like we have all the time in the world.” I can’t hurt anyone though – my family needs to be far away from me right now.

THE perpetual frown on Guren's face furrowed his brows even further as he watched the boy's progress. While the supply of drugs was not going to be depleted any time soon, Yuuichirou's body would eventually reach the limit without rest and the chance to recharge. Even if the Lieutenant Colonel appreciated the effort and enthusiasm, they were making marginal progress, at best -- a quick peek at the ornately crafted stopwatch indicated that the boy had lasted a bare minute more than the previous few attempts of two and a half. It didn't exactly give them a lot of buffer time, and Ky Luc's prowess was nothing to laugh about, either. He could hear the exhaustion creeping into Yuuichirou's tone, and he idly wondered how long it had been since their first attempt. Seconds? Minutes? Hours? It most definitely did not show on Eusford's face -- for he'd not known vampires to know exhaustion -- but it was clear that they couldn't keep this up for long. "One more time,” he replied, trying to sound optimistic. “Then we'll take a break. You're getting there, Yuu. Keep it up."

THEY'D sorely underestimated the foe. Guren hadn't bet on the necromancer being able to summon wave after wave of undead, and as if they weren't already exhausted enough, summoned a massive skeletal boar. Numerous cuts, bruises and abrasions scored both their skins, and if they didn't finish it off soon, they wouldn't survive long enough to make it back to camp. He cursed under his breath, biting away the aching lethargy in his arms, and willed himself forward, but not before he saw the boar charge right at him. His movements felt sluggish as time seemed to slow, and even though he knew he ran as fast as he could, the boar was faster. He couldn't avoid it in time. He raised his sword in an attempt to block the attack and squeezed his eyes shut, but the impact never came. He slowly opened his eyes, and his blood ran cold when he saw Thana in front of him, fists raised, in between the boar and himself. For a brief moment, words couldn't come to his lips. Then he moved, and ignoring the impending threat, went to her side, a hand frantically grabbing her by the shoulder and swiveling her to face him. "Thana! Are you alright?"

i think about the scene in chapter 59 a lot. not the gure.shin one despite me being a filthy shipper but that one scene where guren is straight up lying to yuu about not feeling anything when the latter asks him if it hurt when he watched his friends die. he even snapped at him when yuu asked about the revival experiment, and you know guren almost NEVER snaps at yuu. sure, he's hard on him -- he's hard on everyone lbr, especially people who don't take war seriously, and he's especially hard on himself. guren doesn't let himself show weakness no matter what, because he's the main pillar of the story -- of his squad, of yuu's squad, of yuu himself. he KNOWS that mika hates him, and frankly, guren feels guilt regarding his actions even if someone told him that it was justified. part of me knows that when all of this is over, guren will die. i will honestly not be surprised if they do kill him off or have guren use his own life to reverse all that he's done.

another thing is that before yuu, who is similar to him in so many aspects, guren finds his stoic visage cracking. because they are similar, yuu knows when guren is hurting. he doesn't need to guess, he KNOWS it hurts, because they've both lost people close to them at a young age. they've both had their family ripped from their hands, and guren's decisions ultimately caused humanity to meet its end. even if guren said it doesn't hurt, that it doesn't bother him, you can see the sadness in his eyes when he laid shinya down on the bed. you can see the uncertainty in them when the others interrogate him about his goals. guren might be reckless, but he isn't stupid. he is an impeccable strategist, and for him to NOT KNOW the full picture is what frightens me, tbh.

tl;dr -- the dynamic between guren and yuu is what gives me life in this frickin series. i'd... pay my organs to see them alive and happy at the end of this wild ride
