Time is Not a Line, 2/3

For the Eight x Rose August prompt: Rose meets Eight first. Also for @perfectlyrose‘s prompts of going out for a drink (okay so it’s tea), and “welcome home.”
Shortly after leaving San Francisco, the TARDIS brought the Doctor to London in April, 2005 to take care of a temporal anomaly. When he finally succeeds, he’s surprised to find a glimpse of his own future in Rose Tyler’s past.
Eight x Rose, Nine x Rose, all ages
AO3 | FF.NET | TSP | Ch 1

Rose crossed her fingers as she turned the key in the lock; she really didn’t want to explain her date to her mother. Maybe Mum is at Bev’s. She sighed when the living room was dark. Perfect.

Her luck didn’t hold, however. In the ten minutes it took to change her clothes and freshen up her makeup, her mum came home. Rose heard the door open and shut as she fluffed her hair in front of the mirror, and she painted a smile on her face before stepping out of her room with her bag slung over her shoulder.

The flat smelled like curry, and Jackie waved the take-away bag as she carried it into the kitchen. “I brought us dinner.”

“Oh, I’m actually going out,” Rose said regretfully. “A friend and I are meeting up for chips.”

Her mum leaned back on her heels to stare at her through the doorway. “Oh, are you meeting Mickey?”

Rose rolled her eyes. She’d broken up with Mickey two weeks ago, and her mum couldn’t let it go. They never should have been more than friends in the first place, but as far as Jackie was concerned, Mickey was a good bloke who she could trust not to hurt her daughter.

“No, not Mickey. Just an old mate I ran into when I was out looking for a job today.” She made a show of glancing at the clock as she walked to the door. “An’ I’ve gotta go if I’m going to be on time. I’ll see you later, Mum!”

An 8/Rose Drabble

I wrote a thing! And it’s a drabble! I never write those!  But I’ve been holed up all weekend writing smut (three different scenes for three different stories - still putting on the finishing touches) and I wanted to get something published for today.  So, here’s a little 8/Rose Timey-Wimey-ness.

“Ohhhhh,” he said, sitting bolt upright in bed, looking over at her in surprise.  “Oh, this is bad.  Very bad.”

“What?” she asked, shaking off sleep to frown at him.  “What’s bad?”

“I know you!” he said, eyes wide.  He scrambled up and Rose took a moment to admire his naked form.

“Duh,” Rose answered, rolling her eyes.  “In fact, if I remember correctly, you’ve known me five times since we met yesterday.”

Summary: The Doctor falls ill while he and Rose are imprisoned on an alien planet. (Eight/Rose)
Rating: all ages // Word count: 791
Notes: This fulfills the @timepetalsprompts‘s weekly ficlet prompt of Eight/Rose + hurt/comfort. It also doubles up as a prompt fulfillment for week one of Eight x Rose August, also hurt/comfort :D

“Hey, shhh, it’s going to be okay,” Rose murmured, stroking her hand over his hair, trying to keep the curls from sticking to his forehead.

The Doctor quieted momentarily at the sound of her voice, leaning into her touch. They were entering day two of being imprisoned on some planet that Rose couldn’t remember the name of and the Doctor was incoherent with a fever.

He’d been pacing their cell, presumably contemplating the best way to escape, when he’d collapsed. When Rose had reached him, his normally cool skin felt like it was on fire and it hadn’t cooled since then.

“Come on, Doctor. I need you to come back to me,” she said, voice shaking. “I don’t know how to make this better.”

She had searched the pockets of his velvet frock coat for medicine that she recognized to no avail. He’d only had time to teach her the settings to unlock most locks, cut through ropes, and reheat tea on the sonic so that wasn’t any help either.

It hadn’t even worked on the cell door which is why they’d still been in the cell when the Doctor collapsed.

Rose leaned her head back against the wall and closed her eyes. This was completely hopeless.

She didn’t remember drifting off to sleep but a sharp movement from the Doctor whose head was in her lap jerked her back to consciousness in an instant.

“Rose?” The single word was weak but it was the most beautiful thing Rose had ever heard.

Maybe love is not supposed to be like fireworks, shortness of breath, or powerful oceans. Maybe love is the kiss of sunlight on cold, goosebumped skin. Maybe love is the crisp air found at the peak of mountains. Maybe love is the sound of rolling waves lulling you to sleep. Maybe love is the pure and gentle beauty of the most ordinary things, and we simply aren’t looking close enough to see it.

In Love and War

This was written for the lovely @asmilelikestarlight, who prompted “Ten[too]/Rose - During a movie night, the Doctor makes a comment that Rose gives him a whack with a pillow for. This starts a pillow fight which ends with breathless laughter and the Doctor’s self restraint finally disappearing.”
Tentoo x Rose, ~2000 words
The Doctor and Rose have a movie night to break the ice a bit.
AO3

“I hoped I’d find you here.”

The Doctor spun around from the bookshelf he was perusing to see Rose leaning lightly against the doorjamb. The soft yellow light from the hallway almost made it seem as though she were wreathed in gold, not so differently from all those many years ago when she and his TARDIS teamed up to become the Bad Wolf. The Doctor shivered at the memory, and instead let his eyes roam across her body.

She had on a pair of soft-looking flannel pajama bottoms and worn t-shirt, and the Doctor thought she had never looked more beautiful. Time had been kind to her, and the Doctor’s throat ached with the overwhelming love and gratitude he felt for her.

“Just trying to catalogue some of the differences,” he said, showing her the unique-to-this-universe short story collection that had caught his attention. “Good old JK.”

Rose smiled at the Marauder’s series the Doctor was holding. Those had caught her eye when she first got here too, and she devoured them whenever a new one was released.

Stung

Written for @timepetalsprompts weekly challenge, I used the prompt “encounters with ocean wildlife” for my story.

Nine x Rose

Word count: 1276

The Doctor allows Rose to choose their next destination- a lovely sandy beach.  What could possibly go wrong?

Stung

Rose limped through the sand, holding back tears.  Her leg and her foot were throbbing.  A prickly tingling combined with a stinging sensation that pulsed up and down her leg. She hadn’t seen the jellyfish, but she’d certainly felt it.  Naturally, it would be the sea creature that she’d get tangled up with.  The Doctor always told her she was jeopardy-friendly.  Now she’d gone and gotten herself injured and he was sure to be annoyed.

He hadn’t even wanted to bring her here to begin with; he’d been grumpy all morning even though he’d promised she could choose their next destination.  She’d picked a remote beach with warm sand, aqua blue waves, and plenty of sun.  A new pink bikini was just dying to be worn, and the last time she’d been home, her Mum had given her a large beach towel with a smiling yellow sun on it.  She’d been so excited to use them both…but, here she was, limping her way back with a guilty conscience and the hope that the Doctor wouldn’t notice.

The waves crashed on the beach and the gulls cried overhead.  He watched as spray hit the wet sand, sending a delicate salty mist through the air.  The Doctor glanced up from the book he was reading and saw Rose coming his way.   She looked unhappy, her blonde hair blowing every which way in the wind.  When he noticed she was walking with a limp, he was instantly on his feet.

The Doctor shucked his leather jacket, leaving it in the sand as he walked down to meet her.

“Rose?  Are you all right?” he asked as he approached her.

She nodded, not meeting his eyes.  “Yeah.”

He reached for her hand. “What happened?  You’re limping.”

“Um,” she gulped.

“Did you trip?”

She shook her head. “I think it was a jellyfish,” she said softly.  The pain was worsening and she braced herself, waiting for a scolding.

He bent down to examine her leg that was already red and inflamed from the encounter.  He pressed on her skin and she hissed.  “C’mon,” he said tightly, bending down to pick her up.

She squirmed away.  “I can walk. ‘S okay.”

“No,” he said brusquely, “I don’t want you walkin’ on it right now.”

“But, I can-”

“Rose.”

It was only her name, but the way he said it made her cringe.  Stupid. Little. Human.

She pulled away from him and turned, glaring.  “I don’t need your help.  ‘M just fine on my own.  Don’t worry yourself about the poor little human who’s too stupid to-”

“To listen to a Doctor who knows what they’re talking about?” he interrupted impatiently.  “I don’t know what this little tirade is about, but can we please postpone it until I’ve looked over your leg?”

She set her jaw stubbornly. “I’m just fine, Doctor.”

Before he could argue, she turned and walked away from them, towards her beach towel, her leg protesting the movements.  It wasn’t far, only a few metres, but she knew by the time she reached it, she wouldn’t be going any farther.  She felt dizzy and lightheaded and slumped down into the sand.

Second Best

Written for @timepetalsprompts, this week’s drabble prompt was “Advantage”.

I have to assume that like just about every person on Earth, Rose has days where she feels second best.  The Doctor knows better.

Nine x Rose

Word Count: 287

Second Best

It had just been one of those days; nothing had gone in her favor.  After nearly being killed because she couldn’t run as fast as the Doctor, Rose was tired.  Tired, unhappy, and sore.

“I’m still not sure why you’re upset.”

“You don’t understand,” she said softly.  “It’s like you’re always sayin’.  You’re so impressive.  I’m just me. Rose Tyler, stupid ape.”

“Rose,” he said softly, “that’s not how I see you.”

She shook her head.  “But it’s how I see me, Doctor.”

“What’s brought all this on?”

She shot him a meaningful glance.

He scoffed.  “What, today?  Rose, you’re not as tall as I am.  I don’t expect you to always be able to keep up.  It all worked out.  You’re here, safe and sound.”

She hung her head.  “It’s just…you’ve always got the advantage. Always.  If I do somethin’ right, it’s almost like it’s only by accident.”

“But Rose- that couldn’t be farther from the truth.  I-I wouldn’t even be here if it wasn’t for you.  Remember?  Nestene Consciousness?”

She looked up.  “But…but that wasn’t…”

“I’m sorry, wasn’t it?” The Doctor looked at her seriously.

Rose stared at the ground, unable to look up and meet his gaze.

“Hey,” he said, hooking his finger under her chin, “I mean it.”

Biting her lip, she nodded.

“You’re amazing, Rose. Don’t forget that.”

She gave him a half smile, not convinced.  “Thanks, Doctor.”

“C’mon.  It’s late and you must be tired.  Maybe you’ll listen to your brilliant tour guide in the morning.” He put his arm around her shoulder. “We all have bad days, love. Tomorrow will seem better.”

Rose leaned into his side and sighed.  She hoped he was right.

10 minute fic prompt: Eight and Rose, Things have gotten out of hand. "You said you had a plan!" (I'm terrible at prompts, I'll take anything with these two, really.)

“You said you had a plan,” Rose hissed, cheek pressed against the rough wood of the door.

“I did,” the Doctor replied smoothly, breath hitting the shell of her ear. “This was it.”

Rose repressed a shiver and tried desperately to think about something other than the fact that he was molded against her back. She was supposed to be pissed at him, not fantasizing about what this situation could lead to. She heard footsteps in the corridor and she found her annoyance again.

“Hiding in what is possibly the smallest cupboard I’ve ever seen while angry armed guards are searching for us was your grand plan?” she asked, incredulous.

“Not my best, but a classic is always in order.”

Honestly, he sounded much too cheerful.

“Besides,” he said, voice growing darker, “things had gotten a bit out of hand out there with the king wanting to behead you and me because you turned him down.”

Rose snorted. “Don’t know where he got the idea that I was even a bit interested in him from.”

“You were flirting, Rose,” the Doctor said, a note in his voice that she hadn’t heard from him before.

“I wasn’t!” she protested.

“You were. You flirt with everyone, whether you mean it or not.” And now he just sounded resigned.

If Rose didn’t know better…

It was a quiet moment, one where the only noise was the sounds of their breathing and the content hum of the TARDIS around them. They were both exhausted after having been stuck on a singular planet for a week whilst trying to ensure the success of a coup.

They were dirty and ragged and achy and deliriously happy to be back together. Rose rested her head on the Doctor’s thigh, stretching out on the sofa in the console room where they’d collapsed upon entering.

She let out a happy sigh when the Doctor threaded his fingers into her hair. He toyed with the strands. Rose honestly felt like she should be purring at this point but settled for nuzzling further into him.

It was good to be home.

post break-up au

  • i literally can’t sleep alone anymore so i’ve shown up at your door in my pyjamas, can we have one more nap together, please?
  • we promised to stay friends but we’re doing the same stuff we did when we were a couple and i don’t wanna point it out because i don’t want it to stop
  • listen i know i can’t just show up at your apartment at six in the morning but i need coffee and no one makes it like you do
  • we broke up after i left and moved away and months later i find out you rushed to the airport to stop me but you were too late
  • you keep calling me over to get rid of spiders from your apartment and i’m pretending i don’t know you’re not afraid of them at all because i miss you too
  • we keep showing up at all the same places separately because we’ve always had similar interests
  • cop!au i’ve been undercover for months/years and i know i told you not to wait for me but i’m still in love with you and it’s killing me
  • or, i fell in love with you while i was undercover and i know you’re mad at me for lying but i have to go back to my old life (and i want you to be in it)
  • i know we’ve been broken up for a while but i still have those concert tickets and you’re the only person i want to share this with
  • i found the ring when i was moving my stuff out of your apartment and now everything makes sense
  • are you?? sabotaging?? my dates?!?!?
  • i’ve seen you hanging around my apartment and i thought it was because you missed me, turns out you’ve been using my wifi you asshole
  • i know you can’t cook for shit so i’ve been bringing you dinner every night, just, y’know, to keep you alive
  • i kissed you goodbye by accident - old habits die hard okay?!?!
  • roadtrip au where we need to save gas money so we take a long, awkward, tension-filled car ride
  • instead of dividing up the CD’s, let’s play a drinking game to determine who gets what (it may or may not end in sex)
  • i was so sleep-deprived after the night shift that i climbed into bed with you (and you just rolled with it)
  • you’re my emergency contact and i’ve been in an accident so you drop everything to come to the hospital
  • soon to be divorced couple obnoxiously painting the walls wacky colours every time the other paints over it
  • you’re pretending we’re still together because my relatives will disprove of the break up so you’re being all sweet it’s reminding me of why i fell in love with you in the first place
  • we bumped into each other in the street and you were grinning like a cocky asshole the whole time so i stalked off only to realise i’m wearing your shirt
