“No,” he said, his voice sharp as a knife. “You shut up, you insufferable fucking asshole. I’m not giving you a fucking pep talk, I’m telling you the god damned truth. Don’t fucking talk to me like that. No, I don’t know how long it’s been since you’ve been rented because for the last two weeks you’ve avoided me like the plague. Yes, Sebastien is invested. As for what to do, you try to look interested. You smile at their stupid jokes. You keep the look of contempt for other people off of your face. You get out of here and you survive.”
He saw him ball his fists up and just raised his brow, his face still marble, cut from stone. “You know how stupid you sound right now?” It struk Gage then that he never called anyone else stupid before, knowing how much it irritated him to hear it. “Look at you. Sulking in your cell like a child. Yeah, dying is better than this. But you know what they do to you if you try to die before they’re ready to let you? You wanna find out? Because I’m pretty sure you don’t.”
He stopped talking and took a step back, rolling his neck as he did his level best to keep his emotions in check. “So, yeah, you might want to stand around naked with your legs spread and make yourself fucking useful.” He regretted the words before he said them, knew he didn’t mean a word of it, but said them anyway.
“You think I’ve been avoiding you. That is so funny…” Jamie shook his head, ready to burst out laughing, again. But again, he didn’t. “I haven’t been avoiding you, Gage. I haven’t even tried. All I’ve done is wait… I’ve waited for you to come down from the high you were in. I told you to come looking for me when your mind was clear and you realized what you did… Because all of this is horrible, but the one good thing that I had to hold on to was that you were out there, making stupid choices, but at least they were yours to make. And then you threw it away, put yourself back in here, where I didn’t want you… I couldn’t deal with that… So I decided to leave it up to you… Maybe I shouldn’t have.”
A few tired laughs escaped his mouth then. “I love you, but you’re in way over your head here. You don’t know what you’re talking about, because somehow you’re… I don’t know. You’re better at this than me. And I don’t wanna be better. It’s selfish, but it’s my choice. I don’t have to do anything other than wait now. I’m not even gonna try to off myself. I’ll just sit here, enjoy my days in this cell, and then they will come to me. Because I don’t wanna do this anymore. I’m tired. And you… All you do is mess with me. I wish I’d never met you… Maybe then I would have had a chance.”
Jamie cleared his throat, smiled at Gage, and said: “Now get the fuck away from me. We’re done.”
