The rest of Europe tonight

In Zagreb, Croatia, there are only around 1,8% of the streets named after women. One of them is called "Ulica neznane junakinje", which directly translates into the "Street of unknown female hero". Now, the first time I saw the name of this street, it really got me wondering who this unknown hero was, so I looked it up and her story is incredible, which makes the fact that her name was lost even sadder.

In 1566, the troops of Nikola Šubić Zrinski, Croatian general and nobleman, were highly outnumbered by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's army. 2,300 people, a lot of them volunteers, going against 100,000.

During the Siege of Szigetvár fortress, Nikola and most of his troops lost their lives, and so did Suleiman and 20,000 of his soldiers. Šubić Zrinski's forces saved Vienna and stopped the Ottoman empire from attacking it for another 100 or so years.

This was a legendary battle that inspired many now-famous works of art, from paintings, books, operas, to epic poems and so on. But one of the heroes of the battle remains unsung. Unknown. Our heroine.

After the battle, people got to burying bodies and collecting any valuables and among the fallen, they found her. A warrior woman disguised as a man. Among the soldiers laid one courageous girl who wanted to help save her people from the impeding doom. Her name and identity were unknown, but her sacrifice was remembered.

Even though they didn't know who she was, people remembered her. They remembered her bravery and strength and they wanted to honor her. She left her trace in history and wasn't forgotten, even though her name was not known.

This is the unknown hero.
