Understanding The Last: Naruto the Movie

This post is years late, but it took me more than one viewing to understand the “sudden development” between Naruto and Hinata.

Disclaimer: this post is not written to support or reject a shipping. This post is written to understand what the movie is portraying about Naruto and Hinata’s relationship. Including its development.

There weren’t much interactions between Naruto and Hinata. When there are interactions (significant developments or just funny moments), they are short and overwhelmed by other events. So it’s no surprise that some people, regardless how much they follow the manga and/or anime, gets confused at how they became together in the movie.

I don’t know about others, but it took me awhile to understand the subtlety of the movie. Particularly the genjutsu memory dreams. (Forgive me if you think I’m slow)

As the movie portrays, we first entered Naruto’s memories:

But something is off when the moon literally fell down on them. So this isn’t just memories being played back.

The genjutsu is like a dream where the subconscious mind plays a part, using memories as an environment.

After that, the movie cuts into Hinata’s “dream-memories” where Hinata is watching Naruto fight Pein.

Afterwards, the red scarf (the movie’s interpretation of “The Red Thread of Fate”) began to connect them together.

Since the movie stops on Naruto’s genjutsu battling Kiba, his dream sequence continued with Hinata giving him the ointment after:

But with the red scarf connecting them…

… Naruto’s consciousness was transferred from his memories then through the scarf and into Hinata’s playing memories.

Right into that time she confessed her love by word and actions.

After that, Hinata’s memories jumped back further. With Naruto’s consciousness as an outsider.

In here, Naruto found out that Hinata liked him way back when they were still kids.

Then Hinata’s memories jumped forward, with Naruto still an audience. Compared to the similar image above, it was the “older” Naruto that asked the question below. Because he doesn’t understand her actions.

By then, his subconscious mind is picking up and making connections.

Hinata’s memories seem to have jumped forward at his memory (almost like they’re intermingling):

With this new perspective, Naruto’s consciousness reflects about Hinata through his memories

This is one part where a lot of people get confused. Because they think Naruto suddenly had romantic feelings for her. But the movie further defines his own concept on love -through Hinata’s memories.

With what is shown, Naruto thought that loving ramen and loving Hinata is the same thing

His consciousness then starts to piece things together. From their childhood…

To their teens…

that Hinata’s love is different from what he thinks love is.

Before Naruto can even know what he really feels for her, he has to understand first the concept of love. That romantic love isn’t the same as fondness for food.

He did a lot of thinking first in the movie.

Before he understood his own feelings and reciprocated:

It was in the end that Naruto showed that he now understood the concept of love:

And Hinata’s feelings? They really ran deep.

Inspired by this Otome game where this guy named Sasuke Sarutobi completely caught my attention. XD

He looks like Naruto and acts like Naruto but has Sasuke’s name. Naruto’s outfit here is inspired by that guy’s too.

Note the credits mention “うずまきヒナタ” means Uzumaki Hinata. UZUMAKI-HINATA.

I haven’t sink it in but heartwarming that she’s officially recognized an Uzumaki even in the credits.

Honestly the best thing about Boruto telling Himawari to leave her panda at home because he’ll end up carrying it is that it’s clearly happened before, enough times that he’s gotten tired of it.

So basically, a sleepy Hima being carried by Naruto or Hinata while Boruto carries her panda as they walk through the village is not an uncommon sight.
