Darker Matter//Mixtape 2

Hi Friends-

Today I'm putting up my second release, Darker Matter//Mixtape 2, for free download.  I put it up for you all with gratitude.  Not only am I grateful for your continued support all these years, I'm grateful to be alive.

It's been widely publicized that I was recently robbed at gunpoint.  You can see stories on it here, here and here(nice awkward walking shots for the camera, Geoff).  So many of you helped me out with a few dollars where you could.  Some of you were far too kind.  Thank you.

This isn't why I'm so thankful to be alive, though.  Less widely known, is that this has been the most unbelievably difficult year of my life.  My health has been in question, my outlook has been bleak and my heart has been a broken city.  I've stayed busy touring, meeting people, playing music... But, even then, I feel, 'I am carried in my shadow like a violinin its black case," as Tomas Transtromer said.

The steady support and devotion of my friends, family, and bandmates, has kept me going: trying to place one day simply in front of the next.

This is my record of that time.  It is difficult.  And different from anything I've done before.  I'm so grateful to still make music on my own terms, anyway that I want... even as I miss my old bandmates more than I can express.

So, yes, this release is free.  If you'd like to pay for it, I will gladly except the help in replacing some of what I recently lost.  Either way, if you are excited about continued free music, please check out the All Ages Movement Project.  Because DIY, community-based scenes will always be the life's blood of music AMP a great resource for it.

As I release this "mixtape", I'm packing up to leave for a West Coast tour with my true friend Vinnie Caruana, whom I've toured with since the early days of The Movielife and Thursday.  Come see us.  Have a drink.  Share a story.  The shows are going to be very small and intimate and we'll even be closing every night with a bunch of old songs together.

Here are the dates:

  • Tina says what if dark matter is like the space between people

When what holds them together isn’t exactly love, and I think

That sounds right—how strong the pull can be, as if something

That knows better won’t let you drift apart so easily, and how

Small and heavy you feel, stuck there spinning in place.

...

Tina says dark matter is just a theory. Something

We know is there, but can’t completely prove.

We move through it, bound, sensing it snatch up

What we mean to say and turn it over in its hands

Like glass sifted from the sea. It walks the shore,

Watching that refracted light dance back and forth

Before tossing whatever it was back to the surf.

...

How else could we get things so wrong,

Like a story hacked to bits and told in reverse?—

...

Tina says we do it to one another, every day,

Knowing and not knowing. When it is love,

What happens feels like dumb luck. When it’s not,

We’re riddled with bullets, shot through like ducks.

OSHO THOUGHTS

Without Love, Life Has no Poetry in it "A greater fear than death grips you whenever you are in love. That's why love has disappeared from the world. Rarely, very rarely does the phenomenon happen that love descends. What you call love is just a false coin: you have invented it because it is so difficult to live without love. It is difficult because without love, life carries no meaning; it is meaningless. Without love, life has no poetry in it. Without love, the tree exists but never flowers. Without love, you cannot dance, you cannot celebrate, you cannot feel grateful, you cannot pray. Without love, temples are just ordinary houses; with love an ordinary house is transformed, transfigured into a temple. Without love you remain just possibilities – empty gestures. With love, for the first time you become substantial. With love, for the first time, the soul arises in you. The ego drops but the soul arises... "Moving towards love is moving towards an abyss. One starts wavering, one feels dizzy. Go to a height in the Himalayas and look down at the valley; that valley is no-thing. When you look down at the valley of love, a tremendous fear grips you. You are almost paralyzed: you cannot run away, you cannot take the jump. You simply tremble in infinite fear. What to do? Going back is not possible because love attracts: love calls your depth, love calls your future, love calls your potentiality; love gives you a glimpse of what you can be. You cannot run away from it, and you cannot jump because the cost is too high. You will have to drop yourself – all that you have been thinking yourself to be – the image, the past, the identity. "But I tell you, the cost only seems to be too much before the jump. Once you take the jump…then you will know that whatsoever you have given up is nothing, and what you have attained is infinitely valuable. Let me tell you a paradox: love demands that you drop that which you don't have, and love offers you that which you already have. Love wants you to get rid of that which you don't have." Friends- Here is the first piece of my solo recordings. It's called Mixtape 1 and its available for a free download here: http://files.geoffrickly.com/Geoff_Rickly__Mixtape_1.zip The Mixtape format is meant to be a casual way to try out some new things. There are some brand new songs, along with a cover and a rewrite of one of my oldest favorites. The majority of it was recorded in my apartment in the middle of Hurricane Sandy and the song New Sympathies, in particular, reminds me of those heavy winds and deep waters.  There are no strings attached, no hidden marketing games. This doesn't reflect my belief that music should be free or any desire to revolutionize an industry. I just want to do this myself, for now. No art-by-committee, no selling music.  Just me & my friends at home, making songs(bedroom songs, songs not too polished up).  I'll keep making more of these and giving them to you when I finish.  Maybe someday I'll make a proper record and sell it.  Maybe not. If you're interested, you can "LIKE" the Facebook page or come see me play these songs and more at one of my few house shows or at a date on my tour with Anthony Green. If you feel like you want to pay for this music, please make a donation to the Red Cross. From the volunteering that I've been doing, I can tell you they've had a visible and well-organized presence.  I also have very small runs of Silk Screen posters that I sell 100 hand-numbered & signed copies of.  I make one for each song and they usually disappear pretty quickly.  Maybe there are a couple left here for Going to Hell. Below, I have all the lyrics and artwork posted(on Facebook and Tumblr) so feel free to take what you want of the music and words.  As an added note, My Favorite Blue Raincoat is a response to the Leonard Cohen song, "Famous Blue Raincoat." The friend that he's writing to, in the original song, is writing back here. I need to thank Don Devore, Brendan Tobin, Brooks Tipton, Tom Keeley and Anthony Green, for helping me to make this and, of course my Thursday and United Nations family. Most of all, this is a big thanks to YOU. For all the years of support and love you've given me in my various projects, I want to extend my fondest appreciation. Sincerely. Geoffrey William Rickly
