SKATE HEADS

Skate Heads was created by Vancouver-based directors, Benny and Christian Zenga, who make work (with many other members of their family) under the name, Zenga Bros. The filmmakers have become known for their fast-paced, DIY aesthetic, scooping up several Vimeo Staff Picks in recent years. Skate Heads is part of an on-going collaboration between Flexfit and Booooooom which gives creatives a chance to bring their own dream projects to life.

For this film Benny and Christian built, among other things, a row boat that flips over to become a spine ramp, and a cabin / half pipe that rolls along train tracks.

In the Zenga Bros own words:

“Skate Heads was a way to combine a bunch of things we really like: mobile living spaces, DIY skateboarding and ECCENTRIFING THE WORLD! It's about bringing something unexpected into the streets and having a rad time.

Skateboarding is inherently about adapting and repurposing the urban landscape, but somehow even skateboarding can settle into a complacent state, where certain approaches become the norm. When street skating first started it was weird and abrasive, and that'll always be there with wheels rattling down the sidewalk, but it's good to remind ourselves to maintain a sense of foolishness, exploration and wonder; that is skateboarding. For us, making a backyard ramp was the ultimate form of creating our own adventure playground. Skate Heads has been a continuation of that.”

[POW! WOW! HAWAIʻI SCHOOL OF MUSIC RETURNS TO KAKA’AKO’S ART DISTRICT JAN 31- FEB 14, 2015]

The school is a two-week intensive music training and mentorship course focused on music education and artist exploration for Hawaii’s youth. PWSOM will provide a unique learning opportunity for a select group of student musicians of diverse backgrounds and musical styles between the ages of 12-18 who will explore the intersection of artists and art within the island community. The students will participate in a wide range of classes including music theory, music fundamentals, composition, improvisation, live sound, recording, performance, and the music business. Both local and national musicians, teachers, and music industry professionals will serve as the guiding force behind each lesson. Through this unique dynamic, teachers and students will compose, brainstorm, invent, collaborate, explore, and create together. The culminating event – a live music concert at POW!WOW! Hawaiʻi’s closing night festivities on Saturday, February 14, 2015 – will debut the students’ collaborative efforts in creating original musical arrangements and compositions.
