October 14, 1977, Anita Bryant is pied for her antigay bigotry at a press conference in Des Moines, IA.

bandit1a

It was 40 years ago today…

Never gets old.

40 years on and it still is gratifying

Anita’s still alive and kicking and being anti-gay. Thom Higgins, who threw the pie when he was 27 – and was poetically from Beaver Dam – passed away 17 years later at 44. Info on his life is here. The pie throwing was a big deal. In an age before the internet let gays feel connected, and long before ACT UP, the pie showed small pockets of gays that we could fight back.

it showed that gays were human beings, who might be in the room with you, that you had been accepting as being equals and treating as people. you didnt suspect them as bieng gay, why should you treat them different after? do they become less human after finding out? i mean, its almost like you just found out they have an oppinion on your bullshit

Anita Bryant was also the spokeswoman of Florida Orange Juice! Getting pied in the face was iconic and a huge deal but what really made an impact was that the LGBT Community and its allies started a boycott against Florida Orange Juice. People stopped buying Florida Orange Juice and Florida Citrus as direct pushback against Anita Bryant and her “Save Our Children” anti-gay coalition.

Harvey Milk was even in on it and told people to stop drinking the stuff at breakfast. Gay and lesbian bars refused to serve orange juice or any drink made with it. They would make screwdrivers and other cocktails that traditionally called for orange juice with other alternatives like grapefruit. The only way you could get something with orange juice in it was if you brought your own fresh oranges and squeezed them yourself (some bars had handheld citrus juicers on the bar top) but if you brought in something with Florida Citrus on the label, it would get poured down the drain.

This was the first organized boycott in support the LGBT community. People called it the Gaycott and it got national coverage. Anita Bryant and her homophobic propaganda (she was the one who famously would tout “Gays can’t reproduce so they have to recruit.” and spread fear towards parents about gays corrupting children) truly gave gays across the nation something to unite against and it inadvertently gave LGBT people a much larger stage to have their voices heard. Wherever she went, there were protests. There were magazine covers, tv reports, songs about the boycott, and a whole bunch of anti-Anita/anti-orange juice merch.

a prayer for the church from a queer christian

Father, I thank you for the way you made me, and for the ways I grow as I journey by your side.

I pray that as I grow in faith with you, that I grow in forgiveness and patience. I ask for patience so as not to grow frustrated with my siblings in Christ, and a forgiving spirit so that I do not grow weary of them as they slip in coming to accept difference in their churches.

I pray for the churches that have accepted their lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, asexual, pansexual, and so forth, brothers, sisters, and siblings; that they will be adequately equipped to face the brunt of criticism and to support their members.

I pray for the churches that are debating our place in their congregations, that they may embrace the guidance of your love; you, who welcomes all as they are.

I pray for the churches that have rejected us. I pray that they find compassion and understanding for their LGBTQ siblings in Christ.

I pray for every closeted Christian, in churches that are accepting, and in those that are not. I ask that you protect them and comfort them as we work to change the church so that they will not have to fear rejection from within its walls any longer.

In Christ’s name, amen.

Spread the News THE TRUE INFORMATION

FUCKING THANK YOU THIS IS WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING

This is very important and we should all re-post this.

I like to emphasize Fact #3 - importance of handwashing. Masks are actually false sense of security. Handwashing is what breaks the cycle of germs and virus. We touch everywhere and we touch our faces numerous times without even noticing it. Hand sanitizers are helpful; but safest is washing hands with soap and warm water. Currently, in each one of my purse there is a hand sanitizer; there is a hand sanitizer at my desk; and soaps are used in restrooms. Don’t go crazy for masks - wash your hands.

“We should realize that the problems of racial injustice and economic injustice cannot be solved without a radical redistribution of political and economic power.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Poor People’s Campaign was a 1968 effort to gain economic justice for poor people in the United States. It was organized by Martin Luther King, Jr., and was the last campaign he was working on before he was assassinated in April 1968. King shifted his focus to these issues after observing that gains in civil rights had not improved the material conditions of life for many African Americans.

The Poor People’s Campaign was a multiracial effort—including African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Puerto Ricans, Appalachian White people, and Native Americans—aimed at alleviating poverty regardless of race. Just as King began his multiracial campaign for economic justice he was murdered.

The Valhalla tiny house isn’t so tiny inside.

This is very large- the kitchen actually has tons of counter space.

Full size sink and stove.

Turn around, and there’s more counter space and another unit of cabinets. Plus, there’s a nice large refrigerator.

And, look at this closet.

Here’s a table and living room area. The sleeping loft is above.

Stairs with storage.

The bedroom actually has space for clothes.

No tiny shower here- this is luxurious. The manufacturer calls it over-the-top.

communism, specifically Marx’s conception of communism, is necessarily based directly on material analysis of society. it’s not “idealist,” and Marx specifically worked with “dialectical materialism,” a method of logically analyzing the material world, and consistently argued against “idealism.”

communism is possible.

the argument “you need money in order to motivate people to work” is a lie, a lie that serves to benefit the people who have a shitload of money.

every adult person has performed labor without needing money to motivate them.

when a parent teaches, cooks, cleans, provides transportation, for their child.

when a person cultivates herbs and flowers in their garden.

when a person creates a work of art as a gift for their friend.

when a person brews their own beer to share with friends, relations, guests.

when a person builds a treehouse for their younger sibling.

when a person builds themselves a custom PC for video games.

when a person hunts, fishes, farms, or forages, to directly produce food for their family, community, tribe.

when a person provides medical treatment for a friend or family member who is sick.

when a person paints a mural on the wall of their house.

There is… Labor motivated by necessity, love, curiosity, zest for life, empathy…

We can create a society that cares for all of its people. A society that allows people to perform labor safely, that can distribute the products of labor rationally, so that nobody goes hungry, nobody goes homeless, nobody goes without healthcare, education… or people who care about them.

Marx has at one point called this the project of “human emancipation.” I think it is an apt phrase.
