The Gimli Glider is one of those stories where every aspect sounds more fake than the last and yet it all actually happened.
-A passenger plane was underloaded with fuel because Canada had just converted to the metric system and everyone supposed to double check their numbers got it wrong. -When the plane ran out of fuel they were too far away to make it to an in-service airport and had to head towards the Gimli military base.ย Which was shuttered. -They were coming in to fast due to a lack of flaps control and had to perform a series of slips (as shown in the video above) to slow down, basically drifting a giant passenger plane. -As they come down they realized that just because Gimliโs been decommissioned doesnโt mean itโs abandoned because a bunch of people are having drag races on the runway theyโre about to need. -Despite everything they managed to land safely and no one was killed or even hurt which is why itโs one of the best air disasters to meme on.
The Wikipedia page on this is fantastic and my favorite line from it is โFlying with all engines out was never expected to occur, so it had never been covered in training.โ

people misunderstand whatย โgifted kidโ actually means but itโs ok itโs fine itโs cool itโs good
itโs not about actually being gifted, itโs about an initial higher scoring on standardized testing that means little to nothing or being good at learning in the way elementary and middle school wants you to, so you get marked as โadvancedโ. in reality, maybe you had faster development in certain areas, but the issue with being a gifted kid isnโt that โeveryone told me I was so cool and special for reading and then I actually wasnโt :(โ itโs โI wasnโt properly taught to handle things not coming easily to me, but the adults around me were counting on me not being a โdifficultโ child in school.โ
people who use it as some weird bragging method or interpret it that way are ignoring the way a lot of school systems force certain roles on students to simplify the learning process. If your kid doesnโt need to take notes to understand a science concept bc they get it naturally, well thatโs good, but now youโre not teaching them how to take notes and theyโre not learning that important soft skill. but because โgiftedโ kids are easy and donโt show that theyโre falling behind in learning in other categories that are harder to quantify, they eventually fall behind after that catches up to them. Itโs about the failures of a one size fits all school system trying to compensate in the worst way possible.
And also the thing where โgiftedโ kids are super likely to also be neuroatypical, which they donโt get screened for because they appear to be doing well in school. Or โYou canโt be ADHD/autistic/etc, because youโre doing so well in school!โ. Or being shamed for developing mental health issues/generally not being able to keep up with school work later, because you USED TO BE able to do it just fine.
Or the assumption that just because you can read well or you like math class, youโre somehow more EMOTIONALLY mature than your little kid brain is actually capable of being.
Or gifted kids whose parents and teachers put immense pressure on them to Do Great Things and Save The World and youโre like. โIโm 10 and I have no idea how to do that, but everyone is saying thatโs my job?โ.
This is the best โgifted kidโ post out there. I never took notes until college because I didnโt have to, snd when it got challenging I had to literally teach myself note taking at age 18. It also fucks with your perception of asking for help - youโre advanced, youโre competent, you should be able to understand every topic easily. Asking for help/going to office hours/asking for a tutor feels like failing when you were praised in your early years for not needing to do that.
IS BABY! THEY FOUND IT EVEN THOU IT WAS HIDING IN THE OCEAN
My dude, I might not even want my businesses to run like a business, the way businesses have been run lately.

I can feel The dryness of those markers in my bones
Fun fact those dry markers were supposed to have water put into them to make them work. You take off the bottom thing and pour water in and bam, instant marker success. Only learned about this four years after Iโd lost my set ๐

All of this delights me to no end.
โฆIโm actually speechless.
I wasnโt looking for any information about railroads and now Iโm left with that + knowledge about spaceships, Roman chariots and one (1) unexpected but welcome joke.
I am now trying to figure out how to share this (the age-appropriate parts) with my middle school history students. What a great chain of facts!
