The Gimli Glider is one of those stories where every aspect sounds more fake than the last and yet it all actually happened.

-A passenger plane was underloaded with fuel because Canada had just converted to the metric system and everyone supposed to double check their numbers got it wrong. -When the plane ran out of fuel they were too far away to make it to an in-service airport and had to head towards the Gimli military base.ย  Which was shuttered. -They were coming in to fast due to a lack of flaps control and had to perform a series of slips (as shown in the video above) to slow down, basically drifting a giant passenger plane. -As they come down they realized that just because Gimliโ€™s been decommissioned doesnโ€™t mean itโ€™s abandoned because a bunch of people are having drag races on the runway theyโ€™re about to need. -Despite everything they managed to land safely and no one was killed or even hurt which is why itโ€™s one of the best air disasters to meme on.

The Wikipedia page on this is fantastic and my favorite line from it is โ€œFlying with all engines out was never expected to occur, so it had never been covered in training.โ€

people misunderstand whatย โ€˜gifted kidโ€™ actually means but itโ€™s ok itโ€™s fine itโ€™s cool itโ€™s good

itโ€™s not about actually being gifted, itโ€™s about an initial higher scoring on standardized testing that means little to nothing or being good at learning in the way elementary and middle school wants you to, so you get marked as โ€˜advancedโ€™. in reality, maybe you had faster development in certain areas, but the issue with being a gifted kid isnโ€™t that โ€œeveryone told me I was so cool and special for reading and then I actually wasnโ€™t :(โ€ itโ€™s โ€œI wasnโ€™t properly taught to handle things not coming easily to me, but the adults around me were counting on me not being a โ€˜difficultโ€™ child in school.โ€

people who use it as some weird bragging method or interpret it that way are ignoring the way a lot of school systems force certain roles on students to simplify the learning process. If your kid doesnโ€™t need to take notes to understand a science concept bc they get it naturally, well thatโ€™s good, but now youโ€™re not teaching them how to take notes and theyโ€™re not learning that important soft skill. but because โ€˜giftedโ€™ kids are easy and donโ€™t show that theyโ€™re falling behind in learning in other categories that are harder to quantify, they eventually fall behind after that catches up to them. Itโ€™s about the failures of a one size fits all school system trying to compensate in the worst way possible.

And also the thing where โ€˜giftedโ€™ kids are super likely to also be neuroatypical, which they donโ€™t get screened for because they appear to be doing well in school. Or โ€œYou canโ€™t be ADHD/autistic/etc, because youโ€™re doing so well in school!โ€. Or being shamed for developing mental health issues/generally not being able to keep up with school work later, because you USED TO BE able to do it just fine.

Or the assumption that just because you can read well or you like math class, youโ€™re somehow more EMOTIONALLY mature than your little kid brain is actually capable of being.

Or gifted kids whose parents and teachers put immense pressure on them to Do Great Things and Save The World and youโ€™re like. โ€œIโ€™m 10 and I have no idea how to do that, but everyone is saying thatโ€™s my job?โ€.

This is the best โ€œgifted kidโ€ post out there. I never took notes until college because I didnโ€™t have to, snd when it got challenging I had to literally teach myself note taking at age 18. It also fucks with your perception of asking for help - youโ€™re advanced, youโ€™re competent, you should be able to understand every topic easily. Asking for help/going to office hours/asking for a tutor feels like failing when you were praised in your early years for not needing to do that.

I can feel The dryness of those markers in my bones

Fun fact those dry markers were supposed to have water put into them to make them work. You take off the bottom thing and pour water in and bam, instant marker success. Only learned about this four years after Iโ€™d lost my set ๐Ÿ™ƒ

remember when buffy the vampire slayer made it canon that if you're too unpopular in high school you turn invisible. and that the fbi is recruiting these invisible children to train as assassins. and then it just never comes up again

โ€ฆIโ€™m actually speechless.

I wasnโ€™t looking for any information about railroads and now Iโ€™m left with that + knowledge about spaceships, Roman chariots and one (1) unexpected but welcome joke.

I am now trying to figure out how to share this (the age-appropriate parts) with my middle school history students. What a great chain of facts!
