She could sense his presence long before she heard the drawl of his voice, but didn’t bother to acknowledge his ‘hello’. Usually, she would have fought with Shinji about entering a lady’s room without knocking- but she didn’t have the energy to muster up even a half-hearted fight with him. Not now. At first, she had exploded in outrage at the idea that her friends would return back to that place that had wanted them dead, had wanted to beat her frustrations out on to him and the rest of those that had made this foolish decision… and yet… she knew that there was nothing she could say or do that could change their minds. This was the thought that had been eating her up for the past few weeks.

She glanced at her long-time friend, balancing a tray of tea- even though he’s never had the stomach for it- and then scowls at him.

Image

“Yeah, I don’t hate Hachi since he don’t make stupid decisions.” Like returning to a place that he no longer belonged in.

The court of pure souls. Ha. They did not have pure souls any longer.

And yet… She looks over at Shinji. His earnest expression, his calm, lucid eyes and briefly thinks if there is such a thing as a pure soul, it is this one. Someone who carries way too much guilt and responsibility on his shoulders. Perhaps the only one to compare would be Kisuke.

She knows that she cannot add to his burden. Hiyori knows better now than she did back as a young and unruly lieutenant. She is no longer the heartbroken girl pining after her mother-like figure that vanished. She knows this. And yet… her heart sinks every time she thinks of losing her friends. Like a hollow hole is torn open, except that it is in her soul and not on her physical person.

“Soul Society is a fuckin’ bitch.”

She sipped her tea and scowled bitterly into the cup. She hasn’t realised she has said it aloud. There goes her graceful goodbye.

But really… Soul Society was the worst. Soul Society had taken her mother-like captain. Her promotions. Her job. At one point her friends, her entire life as she knew it– and now… they were doing it to her all over again.

She bristled in anger. It seems that even though she survived the winter war, she was going to lose her friends. If she had known this was the way things would turn out, she wished she had died when Gin struck her. The only thought that kept her fighting to live was Shinji’s panicked cries. The way his face had turned white and how sorry she was. She did not want him to carry more guilt. She knew he would never forgive himself if she died like that.

“… What sorta thing are ya hopin’ ‘ta achieve by going back?”

Tousen had infiltrated Kensei’s squad for 100 years.

Gin had done the same to Rose.

And Shinji…

“D’ya think there’s anyone alive even that remembers who the hell we even are? Are ya tryin’a make a place for vizard in some corner of the universe?”

There was nowhere really for them.

He lets the slight pass him by; if Hiyori actually hated him, or any of them, she wouldn't still be here. Not while he still was, anyway. Although, he doesn't doubt that she thinks his decision was dogshit stupid. He's still not convinced that she's wrong, but he believes that sometimes the right decision is the objectively stupid one.

"We were involved with 'em the second we fought with 'em 'gainst Aizen." The name leaves his tongue like venom, and his nose scrunches just the slightest in distaste. "Ya ain't think there'd be consequences? There always is, dealin' with that old man."

He doesn't actually touch his cup. He told Hachi not to bother with two, but somehow it just 'ended up that way'. It's a losing battle he's fighting, but Shinji lets the kido master indulge in his efforts. Now, though, he leans back on his lanky arms as support and regards Hiyori carefully. He needs to choose his words wisely, but that's not usually something he's great with.

"I ain't really that heroic, noble type'a guy, ya know. I'm not goin' to try an' make any waves or fix anything." He doesn't think there's anything he can really do, at this point, to mend the craterous, gaping wounds stricken across the Soul Society.

"It's my fault we all ended up here. My fault the Soul Society was left decimated the first time-- down manpower and bein' manipulated by Aizen. An' now..." His expression changes, almost on the brink of some kind of desperation. But he doesn't ask for sympathy or understanding; he can't properly be their unshakable core if he's leaning over.

"The girl 'e took as 'is lieutenant. Momo. She was beat up, but what happened to 'er head while she was with 'im--" It was as if a masterful craftsman was given the finest clay to sculpt his idea creation from. She replaced every part of herself with the things he wanted her to become.

"That's my fault too. An' the others. There's a lotta damage done that can't just be mended by Unohana or built back together. I'm tired'a things bein' my fault. I don't really know what we can do back there, but I know they need us."

And he knows how that sounds. He knows exactly where Hiyori's mind will jet off to. I need you, dumbass. He smiles as much as he's able, but much about it is tired and aware that, no matter what, something is going to be his fault. Someone will be let down; hurt; forgotten.

"I'd rather stay here, t' be honest, but I think I won't be able t' live with myself if I don't try t' help clean up that mess a little bit."

"He coul' still be playin' ya…" The Captain of the Fifth was sitting on the window sill looking at the brunette in the bed. Though, he wasn't too sure what kind of mission he was sent on to come back in this sad shape.

Was the man on the window sill visiting from the future? The past? The man had long hair, same as the blonde one who was overlooking Sosuke from the bedside. "Ya don' know til it's too late sometimes." The one in the bed was a wild card, he could never figure the man out himself, and it did bother him.

Image

"Ya keep an eye on him like a hawk, as if he's gonna do a flip when he ain' s'pposed ta." There were signs he was going to be like that and if he recalled, that's why he took the man on as a lieutenant. The man was going to do a flip and that flip was going to cause… a problem.

"Instead'a sendin' him on a mission like'at, try'an catch him in one'a his schemes, an' don' be so tense, ya're gonna grey an' wrinkle faster if ya do 'at."

His emotions are, temporarily, restrained with threads of logic and his own heart's beliefs. These are the things that he has lived and breathed since Aizen came under his notice; truths that he feels as if he knows without really knowing. Instinct. He's learned to trust his intuition for there have been few times it has led him astray-- and the tingling rising up the back of his neck the first time he and Aizen locked eyes was so unmistakable that Shinji's mind hard-locked itself into knowing that this man is up to something.

And he's never really doubted himself about it. He's run into far more problems suppressing his internal voice than listening to it. He wonders, even here and now at his lieutenant's bedside, if he should still listen. Is this what it takes to uncover the truth? How many layers of deception does he need to strip back before he learns Aizen's motives? Will it be worth it, in the end?

"What if 'e's really just a loser?" It's the most benefit he's ever given Aizen; to attribute his attention to behavior and formality not to malice and deception but ineptitude and inexperience. Maybe he just had no friends growing up. Maybe he got bullied a lot and tries to people-please as a preventative measure.

Maybe Shinji is wrong about why Aizen unsettles him so much. He could just be so different from Shinji himself that it muddles the captain's ability to read his subordinate's true intentions. Aizen is certainly hiding something-- Shinji just isn't so sure anymore if it's something dangerous.

"I ain't the kinda guy t' pick on the weaklings. I figured he didn't want no friends 'cause he ain't got none, maybe he just can't make any." Can't really connect with anyone. Surrounded by compliments and smiles and total misunderstanding. He's definitely not just the nice, friendly soldier the rest make him out to be.

"What if I try t' be his friend, instead?"

And Who Are You?”

Send “And Who Are You?” and I will respond with either an under-used, unfamiliar, or otherwise brand new Muse.

Thin fingers rake themselves through a thick tuft of brightly-colored hair. Hands come to rest upon the Sternritter's hips and he gives the tiny captain a wide, friendly smile laced with the malice and resentment bred from the very heart of their Emperor. He feels Ywhach's boiling temper in his own blood; tastes the victory and revenge on the tip of his tongue. His own hatred for the very man he serves riles up at the thought-- that they are bound by blood and his own will might be overcome by another's. That, in particular, really grinds his gears.

"Depends on who's askin'." One hand extends and points a single finger towards Hitsugaya. "To you? I'm yer worst goddamn nightmare."

He tightens the glove around his hand and remains poised on the edge of attack. This kid's expression is dull and uninterested; it reminds him of Cang Du a bit, and that kind of pisses him off, too.

"But if yer lookin' for a name to use while you beg for your life, ya can call me Bazz-B."
