the ecuadorian hillstar is a hummingbird species found in ecuador and southernmost colombia, typically in grassland or scrubland habitats. the male ecuadorian hillstar has a brightly colored iridescent violet head. females lack this violet coloration and are green instead. after breeding, females lay two eggs in a large (for a hummingbird) cup nest, and raise the young without any assistance from the male. x

This little hoot looks like a real-life Muppet! A brave little great horned owlet at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge Complex in Alabama clacks its bill as a threat display. Great horned owls have many different calls and are known to clack, bark, hiss, rattle, whoop, shriek, and of course, hoot. Young great horned owls will fledge the nest around seven weeks old and are capable of short flights soon after. They’ll hang out on nearby branches or on the ground, and their parents never stray too far. Please if you come across young birds this spring, give them space – especially if they have most of their feathers. Good people trying to help sometimes do more harm than good while attempting to “rescue” baby birds. Video courtesy of Tom Ress.

Least, but certainly not last, the least sandpiper is the smallest shorebird in the world! Weighing in at a whopping one ounce, these petite peeps rely on mudflats, marshes and estuaries across the Americas to fuel up on their long migrations—up to 2,500 miles from their winter havens to their breeding grounds in the tundra of the far north!

January 22, 2020 - Stripe-breasted Starthroat (Heliomaster squamosus)

These hummingbirds are found in forests and savannas of eastern Brazil and extreme northeastern Argentina. They eat the nectar of flowering shrubs and trees, along with some insects. Breeding from February through April, they build small cup-shaped nests on horizontal tree branches.
