WIP Wednesday

So... this blog hasn’t been touched in three years. What the hell. Where even did the time go?

Anyway, I was tagged by @leandra-winchester to participate in this WIP Wednesday thingy and I saw it by pure chance (because I usally never see these things - sorry!!), so I figured I should actually respond this time.

Here we go. WIP from a shared work (Pacific Rim AU, ha) with an amazing friend of mine:

------------------------

They're both asleep when it happens, Corpse wrapped around Dream in their bed, his chest against Dream's back, their limbs tangled. The alarm is so deeply ingrained in Dream's memories that his body still reacts immediately, awake in the blink of an eye when it starts blaring in their rooms.

Corpse's arm tightens around him for a moment, nose buried in his hair as he curses under his breath. The alarm has been going for less than a minute, and that's all the time they're allowed to waste, Corpse's arms letting him go as he is already sitting up and looking around for their shoes.

"Corpse," Dream says. He jumps out and rounds the bed, Techno's words echoing in his mind. He's awake - wide awake, that has always been a perk his body allows him - and he searches Corpse's eyes as he stops in front of him, cataloguing everything he sees. Hands coming up to cup his cheeks, direct his gaze to him. "Baby... You're absolutely sure?"

As an answer, Corpse tips his head up and pulls Dream down in a practiced move, and he kisses him soft and sweet. Despite the noise filling their room with urgency, it feels like they have all the time in the world with the way Corpse breathes life into their kiss, out of his lungs and straight into Dream's. There is an undercurrent of nerves passing from Corpse's mind to his, adrenaline and a smidge of fear, tucked away beneath everything else, but his dark eyes blink open when they pull apart, not a trace of doubt in them. Steady as a rock, just like he had told Techno. "Are you ready?"

There's nothing for Dream to do but nod.

------------------------

And I’m tagging my friend I’m writing this with because I looove her, she’s amazing. Go ahead, bb, choose! :D @rebelwithoutabroom

To answer one of your questions, the Silmarillion is written by an elven lire masters who as much as they try still have some bias. I mean look at the Fall if Gondolin and how that treat Maeglin. That child has a ton of problems and PTSD and never got the healing and therapy needed. And they call him ‘dark’ and ‘craven’. My advice is to take everything with a grain of salt, and try to REALLY LOOK at what’s happening

Avatar

I did find that! And Bilbo translated three parts into the Red Book of Westmarch, as I now know. Thank you for your answer!

And I agree. I think a large factor in the Silmarillion is that it’s been written in hindsight, and therefore many things were placed in a historical context. And even more importantly than that: I think the big mistake people usually make, especially in hindsight and while considering history as an overarching line, is to attribute actions to personality instead of circumstances. While circumstances are the much more important factor.

So what I found was that if I placed myself directly in the shoes of a certain character and considered, from their point of view, everything that they personally experienced - from childhood on - and the emotional impact those events would probably have, then suddenly, many many things start to make much more sense.

I do come from a social psychological point of view so that’s the natural thing for me to do. Maeglin is a really good example, I think you’re very right about that. Feanor’s sons are another, I would say. And the more I do think about it, the more I want to sit down and go through them and consider, for example, everything about Celegorm’s background, experiences and relationships, because already I’m pretty sure that his actions, even the most unfavorable ones (you know, Nargothrond, Lúthien, pressing for the attack on Doriath etc.) start making a whole lot more sense than just “well I suppose he’s simply a douche”.

Let’s be real, if he were just that, Huan wouldn’t have chosen to be loyal to him for so long. So there’s got to be more than that.

To be fair to the lore master: He only did have hindsight, and knowing the outcome of things really colors your perception of them, I think. It also opens up a whole new line of interesting questions if you consider that what we read is, in parts, to be treated as unreliable because it’s relying heavily on hearsay. It must, there are moments where it’s simply impossible for anyone else to have been present to witness them.

It’s fascinating to think about, so thank you for giving me the opportunity to go off on a rant like this, and feel free to do so again whenever you like! :D

Of Questions on Philosophy and the Princes of the Eldalië

So, I’ve been meaning to talk about this for a really long time. Because my ties to the Lord of the Rings go back to when I was six, way before the movies, with highs and lows as to my involvement with it. Now, last year, I got back into writing a story with a friend of mine that we’d been working on for a while, and for the first time we got (back) into it and were serious about it. And it gave me the huge kick to (re?)read the Silmarillion.

Now, confession time: I have started reading the Silmarillion several times, but never managed to finish it. We all know that it’s not the easiest read! But I think what I lacked most was a connection to it, or rather to the characters. And since the story me and my friend are writing is the Second Age How The Rings Were Made one, the Silmarillion is basically my Tyelpe’s whole family history. And suddenly I couldn’t get through it fast enough. :D

Anyway, I suppose the point is that now I’ve found myself absolutely *obsessed* with this family. I’ve gotten to analysing and philosophizing every little detail, from the mundane (looks) to the deep (interpersonal relationships or motivations) to the dark (Oath, Angband tortures, Kinslayings and other nasty things). The hours my friend and I already poured into this is frankly ridiculous, but I’m having the most fun I can even imagine.

We started out small at first, but this one story we wanted to write already grew into four parts with a lot of pages each. More than that, it’s getting several series of drabbles - Mairon’s fall from grace and his deteriorating relationship to Melkor, Maedhros’ time in Angband and the way it haunts him right after, key moments in Tyelpe’s past and, possibly, the distribution of the nine rings to mortal men (and women!). This whole verse has grown wildly out of control (and I absolutely love it), but I’m really convinced that we’re going to finish everything we’ve set out to do. (I haven’t even mentioned yet an off-shot modern AU that would probably sound like madness if I said what it’s about without explaining how we got there.)

We do want to start posting soon, most likely Mairon’s drabbles first because they’re hugely important to everything that happens in the main story. And I want to keep talking about it here, because maybe there won’t just (hopefully) be readers out there, but also just absolute nerds like me who might want to talk about anything and everything concerning the House of Finwë. :D

Let me pose some questions here that I love talking about:

  1. Is the Oath actually unbreakable? Could they have decided not to pursue it? Did they feel tormented because it was so deeply buried in their heads, were they afraid of actually ending up in the Void, was there really no way out of this?
  2. How accurate is the Silmarillion as a historical account? As far as I know, it’s supposed to be exactly that, from the point of view of the eldar, but we all know that old accounts are never entirely reliable. So what does that mean for certain events we read about? How long did Maedhros *really* hang on that mountainside? (And since we’re already on it - what the hell is up with Valarin years? There is no way it takes "longer than are now nine years under the Sun” for the Noldor to get from Tirion to the Doom of Mandos. Just NO WAY.)
  3. What was the whole Celegorm-wants-to-marry-Lúthien thing really about? What was their whole stunt in Nargothrond about in the first place? Where were they coming from, what was their mindset, what was their goal?
  4. Speaking about that - what are all your personal headcanons for the different Fëanorians? What are they all like in your mind? Where are the differences, similarities, relationships towards each other?
  5. Do you prefer the Losgar or Sirion death for Amrod?

I have so many more questions but I’m going to stop myself here, and just hope that I might find like-minded people who want to talk about all this as much as I do. :D

Buckynat week prompt: "We've met before, you know." "Yeah, you made a great impression on my chin."

Avatar

“We’ve met before, you know.”

“Yeah, you made a great impression on my chin,” Bucky gestures vaguely, aimlessly towards his face, managing a small smile even though the pounding of his heart.

Natasha’s eyebrows rise subtly and her lips curl just a little, an echo of a wry little grin that has been ghosting around his memory during too many sleepless nights in an apartment in Romania. “Was it really your chin hurting afterwards?”

“Well. No.” An aborted half-shrug, his left shoulder still feeling too light, the absence of weight constantly putting him off-balance, still. He can feel his shoulders try to curl inward and forces himself to remain still in a weak attempt to not give everything away.. “Pretty sure you hit me in the head several times and kicked me in the groin.”

His memory is still hazy of those moments, like so many of them.

Bucky chances another look up into her face, into her eyes, the question that has been a constant companion for months now repeating itself in his mind. Does she remember?

‘We’ve met before, you know.’

He gets to watch that little thing of a smile widen into something more prominent.

God, she’s different now. Not so painfully young anymore, grown up, and beautifully so, her hair the same shade but in soft waves opposed to the wilder curls, her eyes older, calmer, surer of herself and of everything around her. Happier too. She grew up into everything he hoped for her.

Bucky’s not sure if even if she did remember, he’d even fit in anywhere in her life anymore. She has so much now - teammates, friends, people she obviously trusts. Hell, for all Bucky knows she could even be married now.

His gaze slides away from her, a tightness rising in his chest that’s hard to swallow down. He’s being ridiculous. She’s probably only here because -

Why is she here?

“I didn’t mean that though,” Bucky hears Natasha speak up again, still finding himself unable to look into her face again. Just like back then, at the very beginning, when she was so vibrant and bright in the twilight of his own existence that it almost hurt to look at her. “I didn’t mean the bridge in D.C. Didn’t mean Odessa either.

She’s shifting, and Bucky’s heart rate ticks up another notch when he realizes that she’s sitting down on the low coffee table right in front of him, and at the same time what her words mean.

Not Berlin. Not D.C. Not Odessa.

His head jerks up to look at her again after all, and it’s startling to have her closer suddenly, close enough that it would make him pull away from everyone else except for Steve. Natasha looks up at him with her fingers entwined underneath her chin, looking so calm and collected, but there’s something in her eyes he can’t quite interpret.

“Do you remember that?”

There’s a horrible, terrifying feeling of vulnerability fighting the hope that wants to rise in his chest, the ridiculousness that comes with the realization that she does remember. She does. They made him watch as they put her in the chair and wiped away everything they had, and somehow, at some point, some things must have broken through again, must have come back to her. There’s no other explanation.

And Bucky tells himself, his thoughts racing, that this has to be enough, he can’t expect - can’t hope - there's a ravine of so many years to bridge where she kept living, lived her life without him anywhere near it, probably for the longest time without even remembering, and -

“James.”

Her voice drags him back from that place he fell into for a few moments without even realizing and Bucky swallows and presses his lips together. But there’s so much warmth on her face, so much softness, so... so much.

And that’s what makes him take that jump, to push through that uncertainty and nervousness and fear and finally meet her eyes again.

“Yes. All of it.”

It takes a moment, but when a smile breaks over her face, it’s the first moment since waking up from cryo where Bucky thinks that maybe, somehow, things could actually be okay.

buckynat prompt: "Focus, Barnes. You're gonna get us killed."

Avatar

“Focus, Barnes. You’re gonna get us killed.”

“You wound me, sweetheart.” Bucky takes a shot that drops another alien body but doesn’t stay to watch it twitch once more before lying still. “My focus is impeccable.” There are more swarming around towards them, and yet a grin flickers over his lips when Natasha huffs.

“Save the pet names for later.”

“Yes, ma’am,” he says and punches his left arm right through the spinal cord of one of those things. And Bucky takes a second to just watch his girlfriend as she spins around one of them, uses it as leverage to deliver a killing blow with her bites to its neck before whirling back around to deal with the first.

It still looks effortless, always, like grace and flowing water and the choreography of a dance.

He doesn’t think there’s anyone who can blame him. She’s a marvel when she fights, and that’s not just because he’s biased.

Which he is. And entirely unashamed to admit it.

(Because it’s finally not important - not dangerous - anymore if the whole goddamn world knows how much he adores her.)

Between the two of them, they have dealt with the last of their alien squadron only moments later, and Bucky kills the last one just in time to see Natasha watching him, the corners of her mouth curling subtly.

Amidst the chaos of battle, before they go to help out their teammates, Bucky catches himself smiling back.

‘Later’ is going to be good.

I will write Sonnets to the Salt of Sweat on your Skin

Slightly late, but as I promised, another story for the BuckyNat Smut-a-Thon that was originally written for the one last year, but who’s counting?

This is, hands down, one of my favorite things of all time, I love it so, so much. Which is why I’m hoping that there will be a lot of you guys out there ending up loving this just as much, because I can’t express with words what this story means to me.

Summary: She’s not dressed all that differently than most of the dames here, dress and black heels, her hair done up in impeccable rolls with the rest falling in soft waves onto her shoulders. But the dress is an unpatterned emerald green, and her hair the most startling shade of dark red. And Bucky just about flips his stool leaning back to get a good look at her, his eyes running over her as she looks around the crowd, and please don't be meeting someone -

The dead should stay buried

stars-inthe-sky, this little story is for you. I took your prompt quite literally, so now this is Bucky and Natasha with the plot of The Mummy, only with a little less 90s hilariousness and a little more them. Okay 'First Sons and Superheroes' was honestly one of the DAMN BEST crossovers I've ever read!! I've spend all yesterday and today reading it AND IT WAS AWESOME!!! precious emotional story! Lovely writing, you two are so talented!! I loved it ok bye!

Avatar

Oh gosh, thank you so much!! It’s honestly always such a pleasure to hear these things, and since I’m a person who does this too sometimes, just devour a story the way you described, it’s incredibly amazing to hear that this happens to other people with our stories too. :D

THANK YOU, again, you’ve made my day with your message!!

Avatar

have you ever thought about writing a sequel for "first sons and superheroes" because i seriously need more of them !!

Avatar

Oh we have definitely thought of it. We have several ideas, but so far, we haven’t had the time. @saturnmeetsmercury was away for work and travel for over half a year, and now she’s busy with real life stuff.

So I can’t promise anything, but it’s not impossible.

Thank you for your message. I’m really flattered that you like the pairing and our verse so much.

Things like this make me realize that it’s been ages since I’ve been on here, wow.

Yes, hi, I’m still alive!  I am back home from my seven months trip now, but yes, real life is happening hard right now. But thank you so much for the message, and it’s definitely not impossible!

This Time I'm not Leaving Without You

is my contribution to the BuckyNat Secret Santa 2015, and it’s for the-grand-duchess-natalia on tumblr and her prompt ‘High School AU’. I absolutely love high school AUs, and I really hope you like this little thing I put together for it!

A huge, huge thank you and all my love go (as pretty much always with anything BuckyNat related) to weinersoldier, without whom this story wouldn’t exist. Also, everyone go read her story once she posts it, because it will be stunning.

More from T.J. and Johnny

As I mentioned in the notes of the last chapter of First Sons and Superheroes (though there is still an epilogue coming), @saturnmeetsmercury and I have a little something for you to keep this verse alive even while she is away in New Zealand and rather busy in the next eight months.

We are happy to announce the ask blog we created.

There, you’ll be able to ask the boys questions about their daily lives and whatever else you can think of, and occasionally they’ll share some details themselves.

We’d be very pleased if you followed that blog and participated. We really loved all your comments and your input so much and are looking forward to interacting with you some more!

If you have any questions ABOUT the ask blog feel free to ask me here (there’s also an about section on the sidebar menu). As for the ask blog itself, you can ask anonymously or not and really whatever you like, whether the question is directed at Johnny (me) or T.J. (saturnmeetsmercury) or us both.

“Okay, that’s enough.” The magazine was pulled out of T.J.’s grasp before he could have even noticed that Johnny had approached his recliner. He was now peeking down at him from behind, a wide grin on his lips. “Hey - I was reading that!” T.J. protested immediately, his hands instinctively reaching up to try and snatch the magazine back . But Johnny only pulled it farther away before throwing it onto the other recliner by the pool. The grin on his lips grew even bigger, and a soft laugh escaped him as he came around, pushed T.J.’s feet aside and sat down. “Don’t you know it by heart by now? I mean, you must’ve read this issue cover to cover a hundred times.”
