There's a post going around Tumblr about how if you're post-menopausal and have bleeding, you should get it checked by your doctor. I brought some minor bleeding I'd had up in a doctor visit earlier this year, prompted by that post, and this week, after a biopsy, I found out I have cancer. It's early stage and the survival odds at 5 years are 99%. I have an oncologist appointment and we may have caught it early enough that surgery alone will be sufficient treatment (no radiation/chemo).

So that post may have saved my life and it may have made my treatment a lot easier too.

If you get into menopause and then start bleeding again, really, get your reproductive innards checked out. The life you save may be your own.

Yes. Yes. Yes. I keep saying I’m going to get a billboard on the highway that says POST MENOPAUSAL BLEEDING? ASK YOUR DOCTOR because I have diagnosed endometrial cancer in more than half the people I’ve done endometrial biopsies for. And the main reason to do an endometrial biopsy, though not the only reason, is post menopausal bleeding.

I diagnosed two women the same week, over a year ago. One of them had a hysterectomy, chemo, and radiation, and she’s alive. The other was seeing Onc but I got a message two weeks ago that she had died. She was a sweet, kind woman who was beloved by her community. She didn’t believe me at first about the bleeding being dangerous and put off her biopsy because she wasn’t having any of the other possible symptoms I described. She called back, spooked, a couple of weeks later to schedule, because all of those symptoms had started happening.

Don’t wait. If you have post menopausal vaginal bleeding, call your doctor immediately. Someone needs to do an endometrial biopsy as soon as possible.

There is too much to fix. Our brains, our hearts, our finite and precious lives are truly not capable of taking it all in. That feeling of being overwhelmed, heartsick, and exhausted is because we are simply not designed to know about all of the brokenness everywhere.

Evolution is just not fast enough to keep up with the information technologies of post- Neolithic civilization, never mind 24/7 news cycles and Instagram reels. It is okay, it is necessary, to look away.

Pick one broken thing, one place, one change at a time. Give fixing that thing your heart. Stay informed, sure — but broadly. Know enough to make a good decision if you are electing or delegating someone to work on another broken thing. But your energy and attention are finite.

Ask yourself, who benefits from your being constantly outraged, depressed, immobilized by anxiety? Cui bono? Then do yourself and your society a huge favor and thwart the fuck out of those people. Pick something. Anything. But we all need to pick a pile and start shoveling, or this shit ain’t going anywhere.

I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.

Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!

Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.
