It's a lot healthier to go for a daily walk than to sign up for a gym membership you won't be using because you hate that kind of exercise. It's a lot healthier to eat a frozen meal than to skip a meal because you were too tired to cook something healthy. It's a lot healthier to take a quick shower than to procrastinate an elaborate routine for days. Don't aim so high that you won't be hitting anything!

this is actually really helpful and affirming thanks

Hello, I apologize if this is something you've already talked about or you've answered this question before or don't want to speak more on it but I saw that ask you responded to the other day that your 'mast cells burnt down your gi track' and I wanted to ask what the name of that condition is called? Several years ago I randomly lost 45 pounds and couldn't explain it. And while I already had gi issues before, after it happened I started developing new ones that got worse with time to the point that now I am physically unable to work. There are a lot of other factors with my situation that could be to blame but I've gotten an absurd amount of various tests with no answers to show for it. And now I'm wondering if maybe whatever happened to you has happened to me.

Oh, bestie, you're all good; all I do is bitch on this app about having mast cell dysfunction.

There are a handful of different mast cell disorders, but my condition is known as Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, or MCAS for short. If you want to know what a mast cell is and how it operates in the immune system, I'd recommend checking out The Mast Cell Disease Society:

They're currently redoing their content, but there's still a wealth of information on there.

You can also search my blog for #MCAS and find a handful of posts where I break it down in detail, along with the current flaws in testing for mast cell patients.

The reason I lost a lot of weight was because my mast cells made my GI tract so inflamed that I couldn't digest anything I was eating. It was going in through my mouth, causing excruciating pain and giving me no nutritional value whatsoever.

Histamine type 2 blockers, such as famotidine/pepcid used to treat acid reflux, can help with GI inflammation from mast cell dysfunction (the GI tract is lined with histamine receptors), but I needed extra support, which I finally got late last year when my GI doctor realized after a biopsy that I was being undermedicated and needed more help managing my MCAS.

If you want to ask more specific questions, I'm happy to try to answer them, but I'd suggest reading through the above link first to see if any of it resonates with you.

May I inquire which additional meds specifically helped your GI system? That's where my MCAS flares the worst and while I'm finally seeing an allergist who will treat MCAS next month, I think I'm going to end up needing to do a lot of hand-holding/directing my own treatment with him and so many of the meds used in MCAS seem to be targeted more at skin or respiratory system symptoms.

For sure! The GI doctor re-prescribed my oral Cromolyn rx (which a less knowledgeable doctor took off my med list); he also gave me permission to up my dosage of h2 histamine blockers again after another doctor lowered it.

If you haven't tried oral Cromolyn, the trick is to start reeeeeally slowly at a low dose and steadily work your way up. (There's currently an ongoing shortage, so it might be hard to get your hands on for a bit.)

He also prescribed me a substantial shit-whack of pre-methylated B vitamins because I don't process them properly (the MTHFR gene defect is common in MCAS patients), and your digestive tract -- and pretty much the entire rest of your body -- sort of breaks down without enough B vitamins.

Now that I'm finally not (as) deficient, my body can actually repair and regulate itself better, and that's led to greater mast cell stability, specifically in my gut.

Some research also suggests that B vitamins help regulate gut bacteria, which makes sense from a mast cell POV because we know certain bacteria can affect mast cell stability in the gut. (It's why some people who are histamine-sensitive struggle to eat fermented foods like yogurt. Even good bacteria can cause histamine responses in histamine-sensitive individuals.)

Quercetin is also often rec'd to help with food sensitivities and gut symptoms in MCAS, but I'm one of the unlucky ones who can't seem to tolerate it. Like Cromolyn, it's best to start with low doses and work your way up.

The rest of my GI symptoms I'm able to manage on a moderately low histamine diet and avoiding my major trigger foods, though I had to work my way up over several years of being on a very strict low histamine diet to achieve this. Oxalates and salicylate sensitivities can also be an issue for MCAS patients, so make sure you're not just looking at histamine, even though I know that's what most of the info online leans toward.

I don't know if any of that is new of helpful to you, but I wish you luck with your new allergist!

Fun hair stuff bc I’m sad ab what ASOIAF could have given us:

Is this not a fancy Baratheon woman who can’t wear her hair down bc the wind at storms end won’t allow it

Give the Dothraki cool beads and headwear to denote status!! Give them little additions to their culture!!

Let the northern women cover their heads their ears are COLD George

The Braavosi should wear shells and pearls bc they live by the sea god damnit

Targ girl coded and Lannister maiden pilled

Fun hair stuff continued!

The Dornish are absolutely gagged over intricate golden headdresses

The ironborn lace their hair with metal rings, sometimes bc they paid the iron price for the metal and want to show it off (Asha) sometimes bc they’re metrosexuals who think it looks swag (Theon)

I think slick bumps and loops are all the rage in Yi Ti. The higher the loop or bump, the higher the status. Also delicate pins and hair accessories made of precious stones and metals

The Qartheen obviously like to show off their wealth, but I also think they took a page from Yi Ti’s book and kept the styles fancy but still sleek

And the Tyroshi not only enjoy their crazy colors but also LIVE for extreme opulent wild hairstyles no I will not take any criticism

MORE!!!

I think the Riverlanders love a braid crown bc they need to keep it clean in all the rain and mud. But they make it pretty with ribbons and the flowers that grow on the Trident, especially on their weddings

The Summer Islanders def love color and adorning their hair, especially in all their ceremonies and celebrations. Feathers, flowers, ribbons, and especially wooden beads made from the Goldenheart trees

Ladies in the vale love being extra so they def wear big headpieces and hats with long flowing veils. They also cover their hair bc the wind is not kind in the Eyrie.

Okay so I think the westerlands and the reach have really similar styles bc women want to show off their pretty hair and their wealth so they do this half up half down business and decorate with pearls and fine fabrics. This is also what king’s landing looks like bc Margaery and Cersei are trendsetters

The free folk don’t have many options, so they essentially always wear a fur hood of some kind bc live in permanent ice lands. But I do think they add ornamentation with bone beads and antlers and stuff like that

yknow i never noticed the sheer rareness of images having ids or alt text on this website until i started adding alt text to my art (and trying to remember to add it to any images i post in general, especially text screenshots) and that makes me kinda sad

I feel like a lot of people just don't know how to do it or are intimidated by the prospect. I was too, actually, and I couldn't find any good guides on how to do it (beyond basic formatting) and most guides boiled down to "just describe what you see and important details!" I really wanted to add alt text bc accessibility is important to me, but I would always get kinda stumped on how to do it.

But then I saw this image, I think in a discord server, and I immediately started doing it. It kinda broke the ice for me

The most important thing to remember is this:

WHY is the image there?

How you describe the image is dependent on its purpose. If it’s a meme, you have to explain the joke. If it’s purely decorative and does not contribute to understanding the post, it doesn’t need much detail.

It is usually not appropriate to describe as many details as possible. Describe what is needed to support the reason the image is in the post. This means that the same image could theoretically be described in many different ways.

Yes, this. Consider the times that Tumblr won't load images. In the context of the rest of the post, what details do you need for each image to decide whether to reblog it?

Rest in peace Kenpachiro Satstuma (1947-2023)

Since godzilla minus one is having a huge impact all over the world, I thought I'd make a tribute to one of the amazing actors/stuntman who worked on the godzilla saga.

Kenpachiro Satstuma wore the suit from 1984 to 1995 during the Heisei Era. Many fans got introduced to godzilla thanks to his work. He also worked during the 70's as antagonists kaijus. I got into the godzilla saga when i was 8 yo thanks to godzilla vs destroyah (1995) and many others. Kenpachiro 's work means a lot to me since it's part of my childhood. If you are curious feel free to learn more about him and see how difficult it can be to wear these heavy suits.
