Words from our very own katherinebryony on the #101sies event:

Spoken word workshop with Carl Sealeaf

One Hundred and Onesies, The New Art Gallery, Walsall

#101sies #TheCrowd #MatN2014

Learning to speak, articulate and tell your story is one of the most important parts of live and something we want to encourage as part of #101sies and National Mental Health Awareness week more generally.

So, we are delighted to introduce Carl Sealeaf, who is a spoken word artist and storyteller, trying to build connections between people through words and engage in meaningful conversation about issues affecting ourselves, our communities, and the world.

He has performed around the country at festivals, gigs and poetry slams, has taken part in numerous residencies and currently works for the social enterprise and out friends Beatfreeks.

He will be running a workshop on storytelling, inviting people to build a space where stories can be shared and new connections can be forged between people.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, we welcome Walsall student and artist Matthew Rigby to showcase his artwork and a powerful video demonstrating a powerful and recent experiment that he led as part of #101sies on Thursday 15th May 2014 6-9pm.

We are delighted to introduce Matthew who has blogged to introduce his piece.

---

My experiment with the use of my tranquilliser chair inspired by Dr Benjamin Rush's own psychiatric device involved me being restrained into it and attempting to draw my reflection. The experiment was a form of primary research to help develop my project – revolving around mental illness and the layers of stigma and psychiatry associated with it. I was also documenting how one can obsess over their work and if a lack of control could influence their creations for the better.<

The whole process was an uncomfortable one and only increased in discomfort as time progressed.

I have been allowed the opportunity to present video footage and my final piece from my experiment at A Colourful Crowd's One Hundred and Onsies event at the New Art Gallery Walsall.

The event aims to make people more aware of mental health particularly depression and anxiety within adolescents. One Hundred and Onesies will not only educate me further within the subject of mental illness but provide me with a great opportunity to gather a body of research for my project and gather opinions and peoples interpretations of my experiment/piece.

My video will be playing alongside my piece on display in a room inside the gallery.

I am very excited for the One Hundred and Onesies event and I am very grateful to be participating.

Introducing Anne Mills - a speaker at #101sies next Thursday 15th May 2014

Kathy Mills introduces a very special guest to at The New Art Gallery Walsall.

--------

Anne Mills, my loved mum, is coming to the New Art Gallery Walsall on the 15th May to our #101sies Event, as part of Mental Health Awareness week.

Since long before I was born, she’s had Bipolar, Manic Depression, and she’s coming to talk about some of her experiences, her coping strategies, and to shed some light on her reality in this fast, demanding modern world that we live in.

Anne loves her animals, which include three ponies, seven ferrets and two cats and one allusive and mysterious son that lives upstairs. She loves life in her field, pottering about doing jobs in the sunshine.

Small things make huge differences!

Here's our very own katherinebryony from the launch of Who Am I at Walsall College yesterday. Many members of #TheCrowd are exhibiting. The exhibition lasts until 16th May.

Who Am I? Exhibition launch at Walsall College, with Leaps and Bounds Trust.
Keith spoke about how the project first began with adults exploring heritage and identity in regards to Britain, through seminars, discussions and debates. He explained that he then met up with Lee for a pint “it must be said” and they came up with the idea to engage young people. “Birmingham is the youngest city in Britain, and that interested us.”
Lee then spoke about his experiences with the young participants and how, at his age, he still doesn’t know who he is and that it is a tough question for anyone. “Take a look around and see if you can see yourself in any of these pieces and come tell us about it” “We were looking at who we are in relation to our families, our friends, at where we live and who we see our selves as.” “The young people taught me a lot. We weren’t focusing on art, it was just a means of expression. We were focused on discussion, talks and questioning who we are.”
Lee then introduced me, and I told everyone: “I started the project knowing exactly who I was, I’m Kathy, who else would I be? Well… actually, who am I? That’s a hard question… I’m me, but who is that? How do I express, me, through art? I looked at myself in the mirror, but who I saw there wasn’t who I see myself as in my mind, is that really what I look like? Is this the person people see when they look at me? Because in my mind, I don’t look like that! I turned my exploration inside, to who I think I am in my mind. My imagination, my stories and what has influenced me into who I am.” At the start of the project, I thought I knew who I was, but through truly looking and questioning myself I’ve realised, I am only just scratching the surface.
I then told everyone about the event we ( @acolourfulcrowd ) have going on on the 15th of May as part of Mental Health Awareness Week, on anxiety and depression in young people. “Identity is a very confusing thing at this age, there is so much going on! We are going to be doing some wicked things, my mum will be coming down to give a talk on her experiences with Bipolar Manic Depression and her strategies for coping in the world we live in.”
Please come! I really can’t wait!
