He is very passionate about his video gaming and WILL make you play with him. - He won’t normally use his stand power on you while you’re gaming, but once in a while both of you will have matches where stand powers are allowed and nothing is off limits - He will, however, use his stand to mess with you in everyday life just to see your astounded/shocked or exasperated reaction - He likes it when you help with his hairdo in the mornings - He’s prone to being stressed/angered so much he throws a tantrum, so he’d definitely like to have you around to soothe/cuddle him out of it - He keeps you the fuck away from his brother. And DIO. Mostly his brother. - Will be protective over you and sometimes overprotective but he means well. - Will show you his doll collection and if you like them, he’ll make you some dolls too! If you find them creepy he’ll be disappointed and sad, but will understand. - Really likes being praised. Like seriously. If you tell him he’s better than his brother he will puff up immediately and flash the biggest, brightest smile with the reddest face and agree enthusiastically, eager for you to elaborate more

I know that after seeing so many egregious examples of whitewashing, it’s infuriating to see yet another movie featuring a white man as the hero in a land that is definitely not white. But let me tell you why The Great Wall is different.

Unlike The Last Airbender, Prince of Persia, Ghost in the Shell, Gods of Egypt, and Doctor Strange, The Great Wall is not inserting a white actor into a role meant for a non-white actor. This is an original story by Chinese director Zhang Yimou (famous for Hero and House of Flying Daggers), filmed in Qingdao, China, and featuring one of the largest Chinese casts ever.

Did you only see Matt Damon in advertising? That’s because the Chinese people involved with the film know that Americans will recognize an American actor. This is targeted marketing. If you actually look at the cast, Damon co-stars with Chinese actors Andy Lau, Jing Tian, Han Lu, and more.

The Chinese film industry is trying to break into the American market by featuring a prominent American actor. Don’t boycott The Great Wall for attempting to appeal to American audiences. Matt Damon’s entire purpose is to lure Americans into the theater for Jason Bourne and expose them to Chinese actors already well known in China.

A similar example to The Great Wall is the upcoming action-comedy film Skiptrace starring Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville. A Chinese actor and a white actor are co-starring and the film involves a road trip from Mongolia to Hong Kong. If you’re still displeased with Matt Damon, go see that.

Tl;dr if you want to support Chinese people in movies, watch The Great Wall (Feb 17, 2017) and watch Skiptrace (Sep 2, 2016).

If you do a little reading up on the film you’ll see that it’s fantasy based and there are monsters that they are fighting, this movie is not trying to rewrite history or tell fact, it’s just trying to tell a weird fantasy story rooted in China.

And the lead role was intended to be a white actor for story reasons, he’s an outsider, he was never meant to be Chinese, y’all need to chill and actually watch the films instead of getting all riled up about something you don’t want to see in the first place.

I FEEL MUCH BETTER ABOUT THIS MOVIE SUDDENLY.

Honestly this look like a lot of fun. And it is clearly a fantasy work.

Also, lets remember, that the same people who freak out by there being no black people in early European settings also freak out about there being Europeans in Asian settings. Because what is consistency?

This is an Asian movie trying to reach a Western audience. It’s that simple people.

Okay now that’s clever. 

It sucks that they have to use a white dude to sell their story BUT at least it’s a choice made by actual Chinese filmmakers.

Lately I’ve been getting most of my pep talks from Mister Rogers.

Great. Now I’m disappointing Mr. Rogers.

Nah. Mr. Rogers wouldn’t be disappointed. He hopes for the best for us, but he knows life is hard. And he knows you’re doing the best you can. And he’s proud of you for that.

The phrasing here is important, too. “The healthiest life you can possibly have,” frames it as a necessarily subjective standard. I feel like I rarely see this framed in such an open and inclusive manner. “The healthiest life you can possibly have,” is a construction which empowers you to make the best choices for your current needs, not the best choices against an external, objective demand. Making a choice to set different priorities based on your current capacity is very much within that standard. Not sure he meant it that way, but given all we know about Mr. Rogers’ sensitivity to such concerns, I’m betting its no accident.

Hate is not the problem. At all. Hate can be constructive. Hate can be defensive and come from righteous outrage.

The problem is irrational hate towards innocent people.

Hating a racist is COMPLETELY fucking different from hating a race. A whole race didn’t do anything wrong. A racist did. Hating the racist is 100% proportionate, justifiable retaliation.

Fucking. Mic. Drop.

The reason that hate groups like the Klan have been driven so near to extinction is because of this exact thing. It became unfashionable to be publicly racist, and the backlash against those kinds of groups became unbearable for them. It drove them out of the limelight and into the very fringes of society.

This postmodern “hating the hate makes you just as bad” bullshit is what’s allowing them to re-prosper.

Fuck that.

Expose them. Make them lose their friends. Ridicule them in classes. If you can get away with it, beat their asses. Show them what it means that we will not go back to that way of life again. It’s time for the racists to be the ones who live in fear.
