Ya’ll don’t have any idea how fucking brave and needed these plot lines were.

This was before Ellen came out.

This was before civil unions.

This was before Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

This was when your ass could be fired, blacklisted, and shunned with no legal protections for even being hinted at being gay.

And the Golden Girls said “Fuck you, Fuck this, we’re doing it anyway.”

I think it should be noted that Blanche’s quote about AIDS is also “It is not god punishing people for their sins” and that the episode also deals with slutshaming.

I don’t know if people realize how much activism these women did for gay right and during the aids crisis. If you think about it they were all long established in Hollywood and Broadway. They had tons of friends personally affected and dealing with the aids crisis. Estelle Getty lost a nephew. I think they helped plant seeds in people who watched Golden Girls that helped make things a little more normalized and mainstream.

Bea Arthur was a Jewish Marine Corps Reserve ww2 veteran who did a lot of work in helping the LGBTQ community, as well as the Jewish community (of course) and was an advocate for the elderly and their care.

There’s a shelter for homeless queer youth because of her. She left it in her will for them to receive a grant of $300K. The same center she raised money ($40k) for, doing one of her last live performances before retiring because of her own health in 2005. It took damage during Hurricane Sandy but was repaired. And it’s now literally called The Bea Arthur Residence.

But it was important to all of the cast that these storylines about the LGBTQ community appear, and do so in a respectful fashion.

Magnum PI was filming its last episode and WHAT GOING ON?? Is Juliet taking some vacation with Ethan outside of Hawaii (obviously she’s not leaving leaving because Higgins is part of the show so..)?

What’s your thought and theories?

I was really hoping Ethan wouldn’t last the entire season. They’re really trying to torture us!

Quick thoughts on the Lyatt of it all from 2x07:

Finally watched it last night, and overall, I don’t have too much to add to the copious meta that’s already been posted.  Y’all are prolific! Most of the rest of my thoughts can wait until later tonight after I’ve had the chance to re-watch a second time, but this, I have to get out before it starts becoming an even more jumbled mess in my head:

LUCY PRESTON IS STUBBORN AS HELL.

YES, I SAID IT.

Her repeated insistence that Wyatt’s happy and got everything he wanted while she’s left holding the bag flies completely in the face of all the evidence in front of her. Lucy’s an academic, and while she’s not involved in the hard sciences, she is someone who understands the importance of facts. She has convinced herself of the facts of the current state of Jessica and Wyatt’s relationship based on precious little other than what she knows of Wyatt’s memories and her own stubborn refusal to allow the man to speak for his own damnself

Now, to describe Wyatt as “not always great with words” is perhaps understating the problem, but how can he work out how he really feels when literally no one in his orbit is willing or able to help him vent all this crazy. (as a side note, this is a major fail on Rufus and Jiya’s parts as well). There’s no roadmap or guidebook about what to do when a wife who’s been dead for 6 years suddenly reappears thanks to an evil time traveling cabal and Wyatt’s reacting in pretty much the way any fallible human person might.

Anyway, back to Lucy: in this particular area of matters of the heart, Lucy is the one taking Wyatt’s lead, instead of the other way around in most matters. We don’t know much about her previous relationships before Team Lifeboat came together, but it seems fairly likely that serious romance was not on her radar for a long time. So, she sees Wyatt’s experience with love and marriage and has used that as her guideline.

Lucy’s also, I think, a romantic at heart, and what I believe scares her shitless about the possibility of Wyatt and Jessica’s marriage failing is that if she can’t trust how he felt about Jessica, how can she trust his feelings for her? What if he’s gotten it wrong both times?

What everyone involved is not seeing (yet) is that Wyatt and Jessica’s marriage was likely doomed to fail from the start. They married young, Wyatt brought a TON of luggage into their relationship (how much of it Jessica knew about is debatable) and the forced separations due to Wyatt’s military career did nothing to help the situation. It has nothing to do with the quality of their feelings for each other, or how Wyatt now feels about Lucy.  The sooner all parties accept that, the happier everyone will be.  Especially us.

Wow, this is genius. This part especially “...if she can’t trust how he felt about Jessica, how can she trust his feelings for her? What if he’s gotten it wrong both times?”

That is an angle I’ve never considered. I’ll have to focus on that when I rewatch again.

Yes, Wyatt needs someone to talk to. It used to be Lucy and now he’s floundering. They’re both so damn stubborn!
