I’m obsessed with this conversation my wife had with a chilean co-worker– “you look like a rich chilean, blonde hair and blue eyes”

her eyes are light brown, not blue. this is just straight up incorrect lmfao.

alright, I saw ryan reynolds in “the fall guy”. it’s not a great movie, but it’s a fun movie.

um, what I liked about it is that it payed more attention to detail with the the romance b plot than movies of this kind typically do.

I also love how this David Leitch started his directorial career as a stuntman and this is, in many ways, a love letter to the craft. even though the murder mystery does not make a ton of sense, but fuckin whatever.

to reiterate – it’s not a good movie, but it’s a fun movie. and sometimes you just need a bit of fun.

much ink has been spilled on the topic of “why are women the primary audience for true crime?” and the answer people often settle on is “crime stories are a way for women to make peace with danger or something. where’s my paycheck for this podcast interview?” and tbh that’s a tough sell for me.

I write a lot about movies on this blog because it’s by & far my most accessible hobby. that, and I think a lot of film criticism is modeled after “the angry video game nerd”. I don’t have that disposition at all, know a bit about the industry backend, and I just sort of think I have an original voice to add to the conversation… but I’ve never thought about my draw to a particular movie because it hit on some abstract introspection I did separately. I don’t think anyone views the entertainment they like in those terms.

I’m totally pulling this from my ass, but if you want my take on why this happened – before true crime got a facelift by way of the serial podcast and making a murderer in the mid-2010s, it was mostly on trashy daytime cable and tabloids. these mediums were heavily geared in their inception towards stay at home housewives in the mid 20th century, and while that lifestyle mostly disappeared, the model stuck. so women are more or less grandfathered in. grandmothered? bubbe’d?

this is all conjecture on my part, but i think it’s a more satisfying answer than the (dishonest imo) therapy-pilled one.

But that doesn’t really explain anything? What model is being used that targets women, and not men, when the class of women the model is supposed aimed at doesn’t describe the women consuming it?

And that bring up another question- of all the topics to feed housewives, why true crime? Of all the possible subjects, why voyeuristic analysis of violent crimes and their victims?

just out of curiosity, what’s your explanation for the women x true crime trend?

wrt to true crime as content – crime happens often, and it takes the effort out of writing an original script.

Look, I have no studies or evidence to base this on, just anecdotal evidence from people in my social circle, so keep that in mind.

hey, no worries. we’re both talking out our asses rn.

I legitimately don’t know what it is, but I’ve never met a man who was into things like investigation discovery or nancy grace.

that said, both of the scenarios you’ve described have been, in my experience, equally disturbed regardless of gender. pennsy will do that.

the one thing that grabs me without fail about true crime series from 2012 is how often they re-use tropes from 90s era erotic thrillers. seems overwhelmingly like a tawdry gambit for someone folding clothing at home to shout, “this rules!”

I guess the real answer here is that people who won’t commit crimes are transfixed by the people who do.

I’ve become both the toddler and the mother, diluting my own juice.

uh, anyway, I like making a drink that’s half grapefruit juice and half seltzer water. it’s very refreshing. but I can’t find a lot of grapefruit juice varieties these days. it’s pretty much just this “Florida’s Natural” thing, and even though it says “not from concentrate” on the carton, it surely tastes like it is.

I could easily juice my own damn grapefruit, but I’m conditionally lazy. This is one of those conditions.

it’s extremely sad that when I tell someone “if all cigarette smokers switched to vaping, millions of lives would be saved” and they just look at me like I forgot my pants at home.

genuinely curious, don’t you think the south asian rep in bridgerton s2 was kinda groundbreaking, first kind of media I felt kinda represented in and it being historical was also very nice bc I never see myself in that kinda media

totally understand your point of view here, but sadly I can’t get into bridgerton at all

Avatar

politely asking my friend to not text me about netflix bridgerton at 8am because that whole series is horny shit for lonely women, and as someone who doesn’t fall in that demographic category, I do not care

I have a lot more time on my hands than I usually do, so I’m going to probably see ryan reynolds in “the fall guy” later.

it’s an action comedy, so I’m not anticipating it to be anything special but… action comedies are a lot of fun. they should be, at least. I’m going to be so pissed off if I have no fun.

I’m never going to get over the fact that there’s a gin called “aviation” in the US and it’s, like, objectively the worst possible gin to use in an aviation (the drink). it unironically tastes like a pinecone.

we briefly had an aviation on the menu at a bar I worked at, and I fought nail & teeth with the manager to change the base spirit from dubious well liquor to roku. “wow, this makes a huge difference” I KNOW.

I’m thinking about “sex scenes aren’t necessary to the movie” again. I’m getting a bit concerned. I’m also thinking about some people flipping their lid about nothing.

to pull on a recent-ish example, there’s a scene in “oppenheimer” where the guy himself is sitting in the interrogation room naked. his wife imagines jean tatlock riding his lap.

the purpose of this scene is to be tense and convey the humiliation of the oppenheimers. it’s embarrassing. it’s intrusive. it’s violating.

if this one is uncomfortable, that’s the point.

Christians, ex-Christians, whomever it may concern in the audience, feel free to weigh in.

one thing I never really got about demonic possession stories, literature, and movies to an extent, is demons chimping out over a nondescript cross. I can understand why they would do this with a Jesus approximation in the context of a crucifix, but if it’s just two pieces of wood put together, well, what’s the reservation? if you’re under satan’s jurisdiction, seems a little “lol all powerful? immortality shouldn’t need a three day rest period?”

I know the answer lies in dense disagreements about this guy. and you know what? that’s a great story.

wife knows a lot about the philosophy of religion in Eastern Europe, but this is a pretty limited vantage point for story reasons. imagine a demon from Ohio and a demon from Belarus arguing about proper possession process. thats the short story I want to write.

I find it astounding that chaya raichik (libsoftiktok) is only about a month older than I am. this isn’t a comment about her appearance, just that it’s a bit old to not have hobbies outside of Being Very Online.

i could forgive it if she were paging through some of sherry turkle’s older books from the 90s and making observations about the “everything changes and stays the same” nature of the internet. lot of interesting meat to pick at there. instead it’s just cringe content.

come to think of it, she really does give off “high school bully” of her era. in her demeanor, certainly, but also in self presentation. she has the 2012 mean girl hairstyle and makeup routine. maybe she just didn’t grow up.
