"All working Manitobans will have less of their income taxed — and thousands of the province's lowest income earners will stop paying income tax entirely — as the Progressive Conservative government continues to loosen the purse strings in the waning months before a scheduled October election.

The Manitoba government's 2023 budget, released Tuesday, commits to raise the income level at which people start paying tax from the current $10,145 to $15,000.

That amount — the basic personal exemption — normally increases each year based on the rate of inflation, a calculation that would have raised the exemption to $10,855 this year."

While this is good for impoverished Manitobans, it’s also a blatant attempt to buy votes by distracting people from the fact that the provincial PC party has made it clear that it has ideological reasons for keeping disabled Manitobans in deep poverty.

the only bad thing about garlic is all the paperwork you have to do before you can even cut it up

layers and layers of bureaucratic bullshit

OP I hope you realize how strongly you have impacted my life. I think about this every time I use garlic. EVERY TIME.

Both Jewish and Islamic people tend to dislike the term because it's useless and disingenuous (more on that in a moment) and speaking as a Jewish person, I dislike it for an additional reason called "you don't get to lump me in with people who stole all my shit and then tried to genocide me for a thousand years just so you can make an inaccurate generalization."

Christianity actually has very little in common with Judaism and from what I understand (not being Islamic myself) Islam. Inevitably whenever people try to lump all three together to make a point, they're actually talking about one specific religion (normally Christianity) and should just say that. Personally I've heard religious academics use the term and STILL SAY SOMETHING INCORRECT when applied to all the religions they were lumping together. It's an embarrassment.

A quick disclaimer, this is in no way to put you on blast or anything like that, I just saw a good example with which to expand on what I mean since a few people seem to have not run into this before.

So, as far as I'm concerned, Judaism and Christianity have no prophets or prophecies in common. Our holy books are for most intents and purposes completely different, and I think Christians and honestly just like non Jewish folk don't get this. Christians in general have absolutely no interest in what Jews say the Torah says when it comes it interpretations of their Old Testament. The writings of the Torah have basically been taken and wildly (by our standards) misinterpreted over and over again.

There are a few good examples of this I can think of:

  • Christian interpretations of prophecies making them about Jesus when by the standards of what's written in the original, he wouldn't fit the criteria
  • Christians have a funny tendency to think the word for angel is referring to Jesus (this is one of my favorites for a few reasons) bc it can be translated as "son(s) of g-d"
  • The morals of basically every single story, but the one that stands out the most to most people is the tale of Abraham and Isaac, which is interpreted VERY differently by Christian faiths.

Those are just a few examples, but having studied both the Torah and the Bible as an implement of faith AND a book of literature (there be some wild college classes out there), I can say they do not have much in common, not because the text is so wildly different (although in places it can be), but because the Christian and culturally Christian interpretations of it are utterly alien.

This is something that's fine when Judaism is allowed to exist on its own as its own thing (or at least, it has to be fine at this point), and therein lies the issue with terms like Judeo-Christian. It's alluding to similarities that are presumed on the part of Christians and culturally Christian folk, that frankly are often an illusion based on assumption.

One of the most groundbreaking, critically acclaimed, and delightful video games of 2014 began in a highly unlikely place — Anchorage, Alaska.

It’s called “Never Alone” (or “Kisima Ingitchuna”). And it wasn’t developed by Nintendo, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, or any of the other big game studios.

It was the brainchild of the Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC) — a nonprofit community support organization for Alaska Natives and their families.

It’s actually super fun, too. Please play it~♥

Oh man, I saw something about this a while ago, it looks really fun and cute!

I bought this years ago - probably because of this post - and it includes a lot of traditional art and folklore inspiration as well as genuine educational bits. Your can choose to stop and learn about the cultural context of what you are doing and seeing along the way and the core story is based on beliefs they felt were most important. A really great experience, I might need to go back and do it again.

Okay wait this brings up a point Dr. Richard D Wolff (americas leading Marxist economist) brought up in a lecture a while ago; economics needs an ethics review board.

Every other major discipline has an ethics review board. If you're a doctor and prescribe a patient a lethal dose of the wrong medicine, you get disciplined. If you're a biologist and commit animal cruelty, you get disciplined. If you're a psychologist and conduct an unethical study, you get disciplined. If you're an engineer and neglect safety standards when building a bridge, you get disciplined.

But if you're an economist and your policies actively harm people in a demonstrable way, nothing happens. It's all just a 'matter of opinion'

American and other western economists advised the Russian government on how to run the country following the end of the ussr and its estimated that the economic policies they recommended directly lead to the deaths of millions of people. And not a single economist so much as even lost their job.

Economics degrees also need courses on ethics and the real human impact of economic policies so that economists can learn how to avoid harm in the first place.
