spice up those coffee shop AUs

  • sure, i used to be a regular, but i literally haven’t been to this coffee shop in two years. how do you still remember my order??
  • you wrote my name down wrong the first time i came here and i didn’t correct you, but you’re really sweet and now i don’t know how to tell you you’ve been calling me by the wrong name for the past month.
  • i’m the manager and one of the other employees keeps drawing amazing art on the chalkboards, but i can’t figure out who it is?? i’ve been keeping a meticulous schedule to figure out whose shift it appears during
  • i work opening shift, but whenever i get there at 5:30 somehow you’re always already there, looking flawlessly put together. you haven’t even had your coffee yet. tell me your secrets.
  • we’re coworkers but we work different shifts and communicate exclusively through post-it notes. maybe i should just give you my phone number already so you can tell me more about the lady who ordered a latte for her ten year old.
  • you and your friend always sit at the table a couple down from mine and gossip in [insert language here], which happens to be a language i’m currently learning. i’ve been eavesdropping to try and improve my listening comprehension and oh my god are you actually talking about how hot i am???
  • i love hot chocolate So Much but it’s embarrassing to be the adult ordering hot chocolate at a coffee shop, so do you think you could announce that it’s a different drink when you’re giving it to me??
  • at the local coffee shop, there’s a chess set set up in one corner of the shop and every morning i move one piece. later in the day, someone else always moves a piece too. i’m dying to know who i’m playing against.
  • i’m a new hire and you’re trying to show me how to use the espresso machine. i actually already know how to use it, but i’m pretending to be incompetent so that you’ll keep talking to me. please don’t fire me.

Harry looks pensive as he walks Luna back to Ravenclaw Tower after Slughorn's party. "I made a mistake, asking you as a friend," he finally sighs as she reaches her door. "Oh, I'm sorry," Luna says sadly. "You should have taken somebody else." "No, wait," Harry cries just as her hand touches the door knocker. "What I meant was, I wanted to ask you on a date, but I was too scared to say it to you." Luna breaks into a smile. "Well, you'll just have to be braver the next time you ask me out, then!"

life advice:

never say anything to a penguin that the penguin has not already said to you

this reads like a shitpost but i’m actually 100% serious. i was walking along the side of the harbour this evening, just after all the penguins had come in from the ocean to nest. there was one penguin right by the footpath, and when it saw me it kept saying ‘höö’. so i said ‘höö’ right back. it seemed to like that, and we had a lovely conversation where we just kept saying ‘höö’ to each other. i crouched down about two metres away from it, and we kept talking, and it actually moved towards me a little bit, seeming to prefer my company to the heartless embrace of the sea. but then i made the mistake of trying to change things up. i said ‘hweh’, which was something that a previous penguin said to me, and this penguin hated it, and fucked right off. never said another word to me. i felt so rude.

I keep imagining this from the penguin’s point of view:

“Gustav, my friend, why so glum?”

The penguin in question looked up from his half-eaten sprat, shaking his head in disgust.

“Not glum, Sebastian. Affronted, outraged - I had the most perturbing encounter with one of the Beakless Ones.”

Sebastian nodded solemnly. “Yes, they are often perturbing. What happened, my friend?”

Gustav sighed heavily, looking up to the sky and holding his flippers wide, as if to ask the gods “why?”, before mournfully retelling his experience, “I was on the beach where the Beakless sometimes wander, contemplating names for this year’s chicks, when one of them approached. It seemed harmless enough to greet - they’re cute, in a strange, bald and flat-faced way, are they not?”

“Oh Gustav, you kind-hearted fool.”

“Such a fool, I am!” Gustav’s moans had gathered a small crowd already - the only thing penguins love more than a bellyful of fish, is a story. A good storyteller was always guaranteed a warm spot to huddle in the winter, surrounded by bored friends longing for entertainment.

“What did it do, Gustav? Did it kick you?”

“No! When it got close, I called out to it, ‘hello, friend!’. It stopped and returned the greeting - awkwardly, but it was rather sweet, like a chick learning it’s first chirps. ‘Hollow fren,’ it said back to me. I was charmed, but not wanting it to learn poor pronunciation, I repeated the greeting, and so did it! Getting clearer each time, till it could almost pass for a true penguin itself.”

“Gustav is a wonderful teacher,” Adelina, his mate, stated with a proud nod of her lovely blue head. “You remember how well our chicks could enunciate, before they even caught their first fish.”

“But what of it, Gustav? What happened to sour this experience so?”

“We went back and forth, till I was satisfied. It lowered itself near the ground, and I moved closer, carefully, not wanting to alarm it. I was just about to tell it how pleased I was, that it learning so quickly, when all of a sudden, it looked me right in the eye and said ‘Fuck off, freak.’”

There were avian gasps all around.

“Oh no!”

“How rude!”

“I was so appalled, I could not bring myself to even chide it.” Gustav bowed his head in shame. “I turned and left without another word.”

“It said that to you? Oh dear.” Sebastian tilted his head in a piercing glare towards one of their fellows, focusing on the only one who was slapping his sides and chortling. “Björn, you scoundrel! What have I told you about yelling obscenities at the Beakless?”

Björn cackled and bobbed his head in defiance. “How was its enunciation, Gustav? You soft-hearted buffoon!”

now that’s a fine addition to my post

Harry discovered it like this:

They were sat at home after a long day, Luna’s legs hooked over his as she flicked through a book she had picked up on unexplained magical phenomena and Harry went through a report from the office. He reached out absently, brushing his hand over her foot, but as his fingers trailed upwards towards her ankle her leg jerked in something between a flinch and a kick.

“That tickles,” she laughed, pulling her foot back slightly so it rested in his lap, away from his hand.

Harry looked up at her. “You’re ticklish?”

“Mm-hm.”

“How ticklish?” he asked, putting his report to one side.

Closing her book, Luna thought for a moment before answering. “I’m not really sure. I’ve never taken the time find out.”

Harry grinned. That was just an invitation.

Bringing his hand back to her ankle, his gently ran his fingers over the same spot. She kicked her foot out again, but she was smiling, her eyes bright.

“Is it just here, d’you think?” Harry said, his fingers drifting up her calf. “What about here?”

He ticked behind the back of her knee and she squirmed even more, giggling out loud now.

“Apparently so.”

“Interesting.” Harry nodded to himself. He wasn’t entirely sure why the idea of Luna being ticklish was so fascinating to him; perhaps it was the joy of discovering that even after several years there were still new things to learn. Perhaps it was the enjoyment of physical intimacy, which he had never experienced the way he had with Luna. Perhaps it was a combination of both.

Twisting round to face her, he raised himself up on his knees and leaned forward so he was hovering over her. Her eyes stayed on his face, full of trust, as his fingers danced their way up to her waist and slipped beneath her shirt.

“And here?”

He started with her sides; she laughed loudly, body moving instinctively from side to side as he tickled her relentlessly. When he moved his hands round to the small of her back she arched up towards him, her hands grabbing his shoulders to steady herself.

“I think that’s a yes,” Harry chuckled, stopping the tickling, although he remained where he was, half-lying on top of her.

“It’s a very strange sensation,” Luna said thoughtfully, echoes of laughter still in her voice. “Enjoyable but not. Are you ticklish?”

“I don’t know.” The same thought clearly came to them at the same time as they smiled. “You’ll have to find out.”
