I really love this idea! I’m picturing mainly how they’d all be in high school.

Tamahome: I don’t think he’d be very good at school and probably be more athletic and into sports, but maybe video games too. He’d definitely listen to angsty early 2000s punk rock (even though Fushigi Yuugi takes place in the mid 1990s haha)Hotohori: in my mind he’d be the star of drama club and still be the wonderfully vain pretty boy he is. He’d listen to modern pop music.Nuriko: Nuriko is so complex and hard to characterize to me! Perhaps they’d be in an art club?Chichiri: well Chichiri is definitely studious, so I think he’d be into studying and reading, definitely interested in old literature studies and language. He’d listen to Enka or something haha!Tasuki: Tasuki is definitely one of those people who thinks he like the bancho or something and so tough but isn’t actually that intimidating! Maybe he’d be interested in cars and fashion and definitely listen to some hard rock/metal.Mitsukake: okay I don’t think I could envision Mitsukake in high school even though he’s a lot younger than fans seem to think. But he’d literally be the same? Why did I immediately think he’d listen to soft Christian rock?? But he definitely likes some soft nice songs.Chiriko: he’d like anime and TV and be more fun in the modern world than I think he is in the book. He’d still be studious and get good grades but enjoy fun too! He likes 80s pop maybe haha!

I think that’s interesting to think about. I think Hotohori might be a bit stereotypical if he were a woman instead, thanks to his vanity. He might just come off as a graceful but vain woman that I feel like is done a lot in anime/manga. I think he’d still serve the same purpose, maybe he’d be better friends with Nuriko?

Tbh I don’t know why Watase thinks they wouldn’t get along, but in my own personal opinion, Uruki is a lot more level headed and rational, but Tama is a lot more brash and acts upon his immediate feelings. I think this was a conscious decision on Watase’s part to contrast the relationship or Takiko and Uruki vs Miaka and Tamahome; Takiko and Uruki were a bit more mature but Miaka and Tamahome were typical teenagers in love in my opinion.

I like your thought of comparing Soruen and Hotohori, they’re both the “handsome prince/bodyguard” type. Hotohori has a different “role” to Tamahome than Soruen to Uruki, so tbh I’m not sure if they’d be a perfect friendship match either? Hotohori seems dignified and elegant (and is in his own ways) but Soruen plays a defensive bodyguard role to Uruki (which reflects selflessness to me) so I think within their basic characteristics, they could clash.

Do you mean Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden? That series tells the story of Takiko, the priestess of Genbu who is the first of any of the priestesses.

Admittedly it’s been about two years since I’ve caught up with Arata, and some details are a bit fuzzy for me. Anyway, here’s my opinion.

I think Arata is quite good and I think Watase has finally had her time to shine as a shounen mangaka. I think she knows just enough of what’s popular in the shounen demographic as well as putting her own twist on it. It feels very typical but also with her touch!

I really like the premise of the story, it’s like a shounen Fushigi Yuugi meets Inuyasha plus something else? I think while it can be a bit “trope-y” and has very placed and intentional fan service at some points, it still feels wholesome and good. The major con is that it’s been on hiatus for 3 years!!!!!

I think lovers of shounen adventure manga as well as anything by Watase will like it. I don’t want to go too much into detail as you can look up the plot yourself and I don’t want to give spoilers, but it’s definitely worth the read I think!
