I ship tomione and volmione, and I love Ron Weasley as a character in the books. I never read canon for the love stories, and tomione is my OTP, because of the inherent conflict it entails, and the sheer impossibility of it. Trying to make that work as a writer is a challenge I love to undertake. Seeing what other writers do with it and their sheer creativity leaves me in awe.
I don’t see the need, however, to make excuses for Tom Riddle’s actions, just because I love this ship. He is a killer, a mass murderer, a bigot, a fictional stand-in for a nazi, and several other not so flattering descriptions would apply. He has been problematic (understatement of the year) from an early age on (at the orphanage before age 11: killed & tortured animals & tormented other children to an extend we have to imagine was rather severe, given their state after, and he murdered his entire family while still at Hogwarts and thus underage). Despite all that, I still ship him with Hermione, because it is fun. On this site, I can’t emphasise enough that people need to learn the difference between fiction and reality. Would I run in the opposite direction of a real life version of Riddle? Absolutely. Would I advise any woman to be with someone like him? Hell no. Do I still enjoy reading and writing this seriously unhealthy FICTIONAL relationship? Hell yeah!
The Tom Riddle I ship is very much Voldemort. If he were not, why would I pick him and not another more moral and less evil character? There is Draco if you look for a redeemable character that made questionable choices (not saying I’m against a redemption Tom story, I’ve just not seen anyone pull it off. I do think Ansketil got close but I’m not sure she will finish that fic). If you’re not into blonds, there is always Harry who has plenty of issues to work with while not being inherently evil.
Like really, there is no need to make excuses for shipping villains with heroes/heroines. You are not hurting these fictional people. They cannot be hurt by their nature of being not real. Just have fun. Seriously, tumblr, lighten up.
Sending hate to real life, breathing people over fiction makes you the actual villain. Think before you tell someone real that you hope they will meet their own Tom Riddle, because they had the nerve to use a tag you do not approve of them using on their own blog.
If you dislike seeing something you consider hate of your ship in its tag, newsflash: scroll on and laugh. Your ship is canon. Why would you care that someone else doesn’t like it? Does it affect your enjoyment of it? Does it make you stop shipping it? Whenever I see a tomione hate post in the tag, I just go
Ship wars are useless, pointless, vile and stupid as hell. Tag wars are even more ridiculous. Now watch me tag the shit out of this.
