Ok, so here’s a Zoisite I’ve sketched an year ago and only now outlined it! Ahhh Well. Nothing surprising or personalized from the original character… But still, here you go! ;) Maybe tomorrow I’ll scan it properly (this one’s just a photograph tidied up in PS). But, like, Kunzite x Zoisite:

- just as the main established couple they have a picture of them together which is referred to more than once

- probably in the lead in terms of sheer quantity of manifest physical intimacy on that show, and there is so much variety as well (the comforting, casual cuddling, teasing, making the other jealous then promptly making up for it, simply shielding and protecting one another)

- give me two black-hearted villains cuddling like the good guys do any day, ‘cause God knows we need them

- unlike the other Shitennou who undermined one another there is no competition here whatsoever, only support and admiration

- Kunzite would take the fall for Zoisite so that Beryl would spare him, there is like zero hesitation there?

- Zoisite is not afraid to die ‘cause Kunzite is there with him *omg bury me*

- Kunzite immediately knows what beautiful death means to Zoisite ‘cause he knows him

- as Kunzite leaves this world he calls out to Zoisite to guide him to the place where his soul resides, his last thought is of him

Seriously, black-hearted villains cuddling like the good guys. Can we unpack that a little bit? This is a show that equates love with moral goodness; villains who demonstrate a capacity to love (or who are touched by demonstrations of love) are typically poised at the cusp of reformation. Love undermines wickedness, softens cruelty, befuddles malicious intent; it is the memory of lost innocence and the catalyst of moral awakening. (Witness Nephrite, or, for that matter, the Crystal Shitennou collectively.)

Kunzite and Zoisite are a pair that riddle this equation. They are horrible, horrible people – violent, treacherous, thieving, murderous – yet they treat each other with unfathomable tenderness. Their capacity to love does not improve their behaviour in society at large (in fact, Zoisite’s desire to prove his love to Kunzite drives him to commit increasingly egregious acts), yet there is nothing corrupt or self-serving about the intimacy they share with each other. (There’s plenty that’s dysfunctional, but that’s another post.)

This is part of the reason I find them so fascinating as a couple, and why I think their relationship adds some much-needed nuance to BSSM’s grand narrative of love healing the world. Eros and philia do not always add up to agape. Your ability to love makes you sympathetic to others – and gives you the capacity to feel sympathy in return – but these things alone do not lead to moral rectitude or any sort of general goodwill. You can love and be selfish, love and be cruel. It’s not an ideal condition, but it’s a very human condition– one you don’t need to be a villain to struggle with, every day of your life.

Perfect summisation. Not to say there isn’t a chance for Kunzite and Zoisite to one day reform, but the fact that they don’t get that chance just adds to their realistic quality as complex human beings. Redemption can be achieved, but it is purely up to the hard work of the individual, not granted only by a wave of magic and a wand. As said above, it is a very relatable condition.

And I think, wondering how Kunzite and Zoisite would achieve their redemption is one of the reasons why we find them so fascinating as a couple. One never gets the chance, the other outright rejects it. Wondering how the purity of their love impacts their individual psyche is a never ending exploration into their depths as characters, keeping them fresh and as organic as you or me.
