no matter where you go, you will run into yourself

I may break the way I hold my head But don’t I reflect you? And when my pride won't rest I may not hold my breath But don't I reflect you? But I no longer want to mirror your actions I want to love you in fractions And reflect only the pieces of you that love me too

considering k-town

if you know me, you know that korean cuisine is my favorite cuisine.  whether you’re on a hot date or a group outing or want a sweet treat to cap off the night, korea town’s endless offerings fit the bill for any occasion.  just when you think you’ve seen it all, there’s a new discovery, a new specialty shop, a 67 year old restaurant hiding in a small alley that you’ve never heard of.   i myself am not korean but i’m from LA and frequent this part of town often, and i’m still learning.

being a bit of an avid eater, a lot of friends and folks around the internet often ask me for food recommendations, particularly in LA, even more particularly in k-town.  i’ve teamed up with perrier to share my top 5 favorite spots in my beloved korea town of LA.  it was really difficult to narrow down this list, comment below if you’re interested in more of my favorites -- we’ll talk!

1.  bcd

bcd by far not the best korean food in town, but it is my #1 daily driver.  maybe it’s the prius of korea town.  efficient, stable, great for families.  i love it because it’s open 24 hours, doesn’t dent the wallet too hard, and offers consistent food and service.  bcd is especially good for a late night meal with a big group of friends, and i’ve even been known to drive there from the airport for breakfast after a long redeye flight.   there are multiple locations, but the one on wilshire is my jam.  i order the #1 combo with galbi and original soon tofu pork, medium spicy.

korea town is crawling with dessert places. cakes, teas, shaved ice, everyone’s got their sugar tooth specialty.  i love okrumong for their og snow cup. it’s clean and icy and not too heavy, perfect contrast after a savory k-town meal.

and onto bbq.  kbbq might need a post all its own.  you’ve got your park’s bbq at the top, and you’ve got myriad AYCE spots.  recently, i’m liking kang ho don baekjeong on 6th street.  it’s lively, good quality meat, and each tableside grill has a moat around it, with compartments containing corn, garlic, and beaten raw eggs that slowly soft scramble as you grill your meat.

sun ha jang is a korean bbq that specializes in duck!  you order only duck, grill it up, then use the rendered duck fat and your remaining ban chan items to make fried rice!  it’s amazing!

a sweltering LA summer day will bring you to corner place.  cold noodle soup is the name of the game here, and this place does it the best.

the protest inched its way from crenshaw/mlk towards downtown, it seemed like the explicit goal was to get on the freeway. we were on figueroa and jefferson and lapd had been abiding and clearing road ahead for us, when the mob decided to turn right to get closer to the freeway. we moved under the overpass and three cop cars rushed right in, but the mob lumbered towards them, hands up. thirty seconds later twenty or so cop cars came in and formed a barricade. it got tense, the mob turned around and headed back north to downtown.

once we got near the staples center, it wasn’t very peaceful. parts of the crowd would get in it with bystanders who were pissed off. lots of indignant instigation towards cops just standing there, button pushing, trolling. lots of people wanting to just fuck shit up.

DJ  SoSuperSam has been our #WCW for years and years, so you can imagine our excitement when this incredibly inspiring babe-zilla decided to take some time to shoot with us and photographer, Adri Law. So while we spent the majority of the shoot drinking coffee out of Drake mugs, and talking about our love for Netflix binges, we also got to know what Sam enjoys doing when she’s not touring the globe.
