A report by the United Nations stated that one million species are on the brink of extinction. On behalf of @onemilliononemonth I’m pleased to be a species ambassador for Siempreviva de Guelgue, an endemic plant species of Tenerife in the Canary islands. Apparently, there are only 160 specimens of these plants left. 

This non-profit art project sees 30 international guest artist’s help raise awareness by drawing one species per day. In my home I’ve framed this series of six etchings based on Plato’s Symposium. I made these back in 2013 and the imagery draws inspiration from Greek mythology, and early ideas on love from notable figures including the philosopher Socrates, and comic playwright Aristophanes. Generating ideas for editorial artworks in my sketchbook often look like this. The seed of an early idea, conveyed in short-hand gestures of line almost like taking notes, the aim being to get an idea onto paper rapidly before moving onto the next.
