Sophie she/her/hers over 21 years old I'm a writer and I tag things that inspire me as "story ideas." Feel free to use them for inspiration! My likes glitched up so when I really want to save something I tag it as "the likes archive". Click here for my professional writing blog.

I'm re-reading the Discworld series for reasons, and honestly the most relatable part of reading these as an adult is how many of the protagonists start out being tired, used to their little routine and vaguely disgruntled by the interruption of the Plot. Sam Vimes wants to lie drunk in a gutter and absolutely doesn't want to be arresting dragons. Rincewind is yanked into every situation he's ever encountered, though he'd much rather be lying in a gutter too. (Minus the alcohol. Plus regretting everything he's ever done said witnessed or even heard about fourth-hand in his whole life.) Granny Weatherwax is deeply suspicious of foreign parts and that includes the next town over; Nanny has leaned into the armor of "nothing ever happens to jolly grannies who terrorize their daughters-in-law and make Saucy Jokes"

Only the young people don't seem to have picked up on this---and that's fortunate, because someone has to run around making things happen, if only so Vimes and Granny and Rincewind have a reason to get up (complaining bitterly the whole time) and put it all to rights. Without Carrot, Margrat, Eric, etc. these characters don't have that reason; they're likely to stay in the metaphorical gutter and keep wondering where it all went wrong or why anything has to change.

............well, that's not quite true. You get the sense that Vetinari knows how much certain people hate the Plot. And as the person sitting behind the metaphorical lighting board of Ankh-Morpork, he takes no small pleasure in forcing the Plot-haters specifically to stand up, and say some lines.

Erev Pesach really is the worst- you have no Chametz left in your house and even if you did you can't eat it anyway, but you also can't eat Matzah or any other food that's part of the Seder, so you can't have wine, you can't have charoset, you can't have the vegetables you use in Karpas.....for breakfast this morning I had a fried egg (whoops eggs are part of Seder but I literally had no other food) and homemade cucumber pickles, no carbs at all, and for lunch I had two kosher-for-Pesach pastries I took from the Chabad house. It's awful. I have no food in my apartment except some eggs and homemade pickles. I'm just waiting till I get to my parents' place, at least they have cheese and chips and actual food.

and is your shame helpful? is it inspiring goodness and change? or is it keeping you frozen in time unable to move on and be everything you have expanded to be?

It's not lost on me that part of my job as a fiction writer is helping people imagine things. Like you couldn't think of this yourself so let me walk you through it.

I also have this happen to me when I read. Like yeah I can't imagine what it's like to go on a scientifically accurate space adventure. Walk me through that. Help me take my time with it.

Every type of fiction writer does this tbh. You didn't slow down enough to imagine that viking romance. Let me walk you through it. And we love it, seeing as storyteller is still a job in some form like half a million years later. Imagine if those stars were sisters. No really, sit down and think about it a minute I'll help

Visual artists get to just give people what they’re thinking about. You just make it happen. Here’s a cow. I’ve gotta describe the cow. Make the cow seem interesting. Get into the personal and family history of the cow.

my only strongly-held yu-gi-oh headcanon is that, in the universe of the dub, yugi is partially jewish. this is for two reasons:

1. his grandfather’s name is solomon (again, just in the universe of the dub), and i’ve never met a goy named solomon

2. how hilarious would it be to sit through a passover seder with an ancient pharaoh riding shotgun in your head

Other evidence:

  • Solomon is the reincarnation of Shimon which is also a Jewish-ass name
  • Yugi’s hair frames his face in a way that, plus chin, is a six-pointed star ✡️
  • I’m jewish and I said so

Being kind to ghosts is a Jewish value

I was just telling my coworkers today about how part of the official Passover cedar is literally summoning an ancient ghost to get drunk with you and I didn’t quite realize how wild Judaism is until I had to explain that

Objection: Elijah never died, so whatever he is, it isn’t a ghost.

look i googled “passover elijah” and this is the first image result

Image

if it looks like a ghost and quacks like a ghost it’s a fuckin g ghost

That’s my grandpa

Elijah Never Died He Tucked His Arms And Legs Into His Belley. Curled Up Into A Ball. And He Just Rolled Away.

We have no conclusive proof that Elijah wasn’t always eight feet tall and translucent.

Elijah has to drive his flaming chariot to every single Jewish home WHILE DRINKING. If he isn’t a ghost at the start of the night, he’ll be one by the end of it.

Don’t worry, Miriam’s the designated driver, that’s why her cup has water

i think we should remind musicians they can absolutely make up little stories for their songs btw. it doesn’t have to be about them at all. you can invent a guy and put him in situations to music. time honoured tradition in fact.

Can't afford art school?

After seeing post like this 👇

And this gem 👇

As well as countless of others from the AI generator community. Just talking about how "inaccessible art" is, I decided why not show how wrong these guys are while also helping anyone who actually wants to learn.

Here is the first one ART TEACHERS! There are plenty online and in places like youtube.

📺Here is my list:

  1. Proko (Free)
  2. Marc Brunet (Free but he does have other classes for a cheap price. Use to work for Blizzard)
  3. Aaron Rutten (free)
  4. BoroCG (free)
  5. Jesse J. Jones (free, talks about animating)
  6. Jesus Conde (free)
  7. Mohammed Agbadi (free, he gives some advice in some videos and talks about art)
  8. Ross Draws (free, he does have other classes for a good price)
  9. SamDoesArts (free, gives good advice and critiques)
  10. Drawfee Show (free, they do give some good advice and great inspiration)
  11. The Art of Aaron Blaise ( useful tips for digital art and animation. Was an animator for Disney)
  12. Bobby Chiu ( useful tips and interviews with artist who are in the industry or making a living as artist)

Second part BOOKS, I have collected some books that have helped me and might help others.

📚Here is my list:

  1. The "how to draw manga" series produced by Graphic-sha. These are for manga artist but they give great advice and information.
  2. "Creating characters with personality" by Tom Bancroft. A great book that can help not just people who draw cartoons but also realistic ones. As it helps you with facial ques and how to make a character interesting.
  3. "Albinus on anatomy" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Great book to help someone learn basic anatomy.
  4. "Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer and Robert Beverly Hale. A good book if you want to go further in-depth with anatomy.
  5. "Directing the story" by Francis Glebas. A good book if you want to Story board or make comics.
  6. "Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger. A good book for if you want to draw animals or creatures.
  7. "Constructive Anatomy: with almost 500 illustrations" by George B. Bridgman. A great book to help you block out shadows in your figures and see them in a more 3 diamantine way.
  8. "Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and expand" by Burne Hogarth. A book that shows how to block out shapes and easily understand what you are looking out. When it comes to human subjects.
  9. "An Atlas of animal anatomy for artist" by W. Ellenberger and H. Dittrich and H. Baum. This is another good one for people who want to draw animals or creatures.
  10. Etherington Brothers, they make books and have a free blog with art tips.

As for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are more expensive.

For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.

💻As for art programs here is a list of Free to pay.

  1. Clip Studio paint ( you can choose to pay once or sub and get updates)
  2. Procreate ( pay once for $9.99)
  3. Blender (for 3D modules/sculpting, ect Free)
  4. PaintTool SAI (pay but has a 31 day free trail)
  5. Krita (Free)
  6. mypaint (free)
  7. FireAlpaca (free)
  8. Libresprite (free, for pixel art)

Those are the ones I can recall.

So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.

I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.

Hope this was helpful and have a great day.

Incase people missed this.

Also recommending Making Comics by Scott McCloud. I’ve read it at least four times and it’s the best comic-making advice I’ve EVER seen (and it’s a comic itself too!). I always reread it before starting a major comic project.

children existing in public spaces is genuinely like. necessary for the continuation of society. it doesnt have to be your kids you dont have to volunteer at a daycare or whatever but you need to be able to tolerate the presence of someone who is learning how to exist as a human and interact with people

Can’t believe I have to say this: I don’t care if someone is a bi lesbian.

My approach to any label discourse is : it’s not my business what words people use to describe themselves. I’m too busy dealing with my own shit to care about if someone calls themselves something that ppl think is ‘contradictory’.

Y’all really need to stop caring if someone identifies in a way you don’t like, it’s clearly ruining y’all’s mental health.

you can tell that the protocols of the elders of zion is a fake story because it’s a book where a bunch of old jews gather in a room and agree on something

Why is it people are incapable of listening to a Taylor Swift song and treating it like a piece of creative writing, not like a transcript from a lie detector test

✨Having someone who is invested in your story and discusses it with you is like a solid half of the fun of writing. I'm not even kidding.✨
