Listed under things that fuck me up: Gaara had literally every reason to cry throughout the Shippuden part of the manga.

He literally had to give up his life’s meaning twice, and that would have been hard to bear. Once when he was six, and again when he was twelve. He would have felt he’d wasted years of his life being brainwashed by one man twice─── And even though this can be seen as a chance to redeem himself (which is uplifting), he still had to take every structure he knew of in his life, and throw it to the ground and begin again. Gaara did not cry for this in the manga.

That being said, he also would have had to deal with the process of trying to redeem himself. This would have included a seemingly endless cycle of being set back to the times he turned on the village, disobeyed orders, and slaughtered innocents─── Gaara would have had to endure a lot of nights thinking “They’ll never believe that I’ve changed.” Gaara did not cry for this in the manga.

He became Kazekage at sixteen─ Less than half the age of his father, and is easily the youngest Kage to be elected. Being sixteen on its own is terrifying. Being sixteen and also being the elected leader of an entire country of people? Unable to break or stagger, expected to make the right decision every time, being watched, criticised, and judged continuously at literally sixteen. Gaara did not cry for this in the manga.

Not to mention the long-time after effects of literally being demonised for sixteen years of your life. Being openly told to rot, die, suffer, and seeing your best friend kill himself before you would have known what the word “suicide” meant. Being isolated not from your own village, but from your own family as well─ Gaara would have to live with these memories, and yet, Gaara did not cry for this in the manga.

You know what fucks me up?

The thing that makes Gaara cry, when he had literally every right to cry,

 was the concept that somebody out there loved him.
