Speaking of which Pan’s Labyrinth Spanish-language film, released in Spanish-speaking countries under the title El Laberinto del Fauno which is actually more accurate because the Faun in it is just a Faun he’s not Pan but i guess Pan’s Labyrinth just flowed better to English audiences? ANYWAY i digress okay  Pan’s Labyrinth is an incredible movie Doug Jones plays another creature/monster thing it’s another dark fairy tale type movie with moments of shocking brutality and violence actually more so i’d say than Shape of Water no bare white man ass sex scenes though so that’s a plus but it’s very similar stylistically also has great messages set right after the Spanish Civil War it’s about a little girl who stumbles upon an abandoned old rock labyrinth behind her house that’s ostensibly enchanted but nobody can tell but her. Also her stepfather is a Francoist Captain and overall dickhead, but his maid and doctor are both Republican Rebels, meanwhile one day a faun comes to the little girl and tells her she’s really a fairy princess but she needs to pass some tests after spending so long in the human world and shit………..goes down. The juxtaposition of what’s happening during the rebellion, the gritty horrifying realistic war atrocity shit and the sometimes equally dark but in a much more fanciful way shit that’s happening in the fairy world is really quite beautiful can’t recommend it highly enough overlooked gem if you loved The Shape of Water definitely check it out

i feel like why the aziz ansari case is polarising and why so many men as well as women (many of whom have previously been supportive of #metoo) are adamant that it wasn’t sexual assault is because if you accept that coercion is not consent, then a lot of men have to accept that they have inflicted non consensual sex acts upon women/people. and if women admit that coercion isn’t consent than they have to accept that they had non consensual sexual acts inflicted upon them. 

and whilst explicit and repeated consent is important, the focus on “no means no” has left some people acting like ten no’s and a single defeated yes means yes. also that due to societal conditioning or pressure, women or more vulnerable people may not say a clear and firm “no” but rather a quiet and placating “i’d rather not” or “if you don’t mind can we do something else”
