Blood type: Glitter +
For its color palette, the octopus uses three layers of three different types of cells near the skin’s surface. The deepest layer passively reflects background light. The topmost may contain the colors yellow, red, brown, and black. The middle layer shows an array of glittering blues, greens, and golds. But how does an octopus decide what animal to mimic, what colors to turn? Scientists have no idea, especially given that octopuses are likely colorblind. But new evidence suggests a breathtaking possibility. Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory and University of Washington researchers found that the skin of the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, a color-changing cousin of octopuses, contains gene sequences usually expressed only in the light-sensing retina of the eye. In other words, cephalopods — octopuses, cuttlefish, and squid — may be able to see with their skin. The American philosopher Thomas Nagel once wrote a famous paper titled “What Is It Like to Be a Bat?” Bats can see with sound. Like dolphins, they can locate their prey using echoes. Nagel concluded it was impossible to know what it’s like to be a bat. And a bat is a fellow mammal like us — not someone who tastes with its suckers, sees with its skin, and whose severed arms can wander about, each with a mind of its own. Nevertheless, there are researchers still working diligently to understand what it’s like to be an octopus.

Deep Intellect, Sy Montgomery. (via arabellesicardi)

The downfall of the human race is falsely assuming a lack of intelligence simply because they do not understand something. Do better, beloveds.

What does sickness look like to you?...Society has such a warped & ableist view of what illness physically looks like. Disability is infinitely more complex than the wheelchair engraved bright blue placard you’re used to. ♿️ . This is my 6th injection procedure. I know, I know that I smile a lot....so much of my life is spent seeking joy so I can mask the overwhelming pain I live with daily & focus instead on manifesting my aspirations into reality. My life with lupus will not always be adorned with glamor & glitter and that’s ok. I hope this challenges you to rethink your perception of illness & disability. Stop assuming you know the limitations of another persons body. 🛑❗️ . [A #HospitalGlam self portrait captured before procedure. Three X’s mark the upper back/shoulder area, both left and right. Each X location site will receive a trigger shot injection to provide pain relief.]

My Favorite Sheetmasks

Thought I’d share some of my favorite sheet-masks for managing several different skincare concerns that I struggle with regularly. (oily, combination, & acne prone)

*Typically, you’re supposed to sheet-mask after cleansing and using toner. After masking, then you can continue with the rest of your skincare routine.

Goodal Black Charcoal Mask ($12) This is one of my favorite sheet-masks for oil & pore control and it is available in a handy 5-pack. Goodal is a Korean skincare brand that prioritizes the use of fermented botanical & medicinal ingredients. Commonly known as “hanbang.” Very rarely do I find a sheet-mask that actually minimizes my pores. Besides oil, it’s also great for drying up stubborn acne breakouts.

Mediheal H.D.P. Pore-Stamping Black Mask ($12) This sheet-mask brand is commonly used by K-pop superstars & is even said to be BTS (Bangtan Boys) favorite masks for managing their skin while performing concerts all across the world. Mediheal has a specialized sheet-mask for just about every skincare concern. This is my favorite for getting rid of excess oil & sebum. Plus it also has niacinamide which is one of my favorite ingredients for brightening & evening skin tone. Available in a 10-pack.

Tosowoong Pure Green Tea Mask ($12) These come in a 10-pack and you can select from Aloe, Green Tea, Blueberry, Propolis, and Snail. The Green Tea sheet-mask focuses on re-energizing and hydrating the skin and aims to rebalance moisture which is a major key in controlling oily skin. Extra bonuses include fighting wrinkles and brightening/evening the skin tone.

Whamisa Organic Fruits & Tomato Fermented Hydrogel ($9.98) I absolutely love this brand! Although it’s a bit pricier than the other options I mentioned, keep in mind that the ingredients are 95% organic with 100% all natural ingredients. This mask contains lactobacillus which can be found in yogurt! Simply put, it’s probiotics for the skin which is super helpful for treating and calming acne, rosacea, and red irritated skin.

TonyMoly Timeless Ferment Snail Eye Mask ($5) I’ll admit I haven’t ventured too deeply into the world of eye skincare. I’ve tried a few gimmicky lace eye sheet-masks but I did not find the results I wanted until I tried THESE. FERMENTED. SNAIL. ESSENCE. If it’s fermented I want it on mah face, immediately! These have a gentle yet divine scent that I can’t quite put my finger on. Works best for puffy and dark eye circles in need of brightening. Chill them in the fridge before using for best results.

Beauty Bloggers Note: A sheet-mask is not a “one & done” type of product. They work best when used consistently, as in every week. Daily if you want even better results. Taking care of your skin should be a long-term investment in YOU.

One of my biggest #KCON16NY highlights was a panel discussing 'Cultural Clashes in the Hallyu Wave' at @kconusa this year. I was blown away by the deep discussions we had openly about cultural appropriation, colorism, and racism from both ends of the spectrum. I'd like to thank #Kcon for providing a safe space to these crucial conversations that affect people from different cultures all across the globe and allowing us to learn how to appreciate a foreign culture with being disrespectful. Keep your eyes peeled for a full capture of the panel with insights from Kcon 16 NY over my blog: SoultoSeoul.me 📝🌎💞 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~의 가장 좋은 부분은 @kconusa 에 ' 문화 한 류 물결에 충돌 '에 대 한 얘기를 했다. 내 블로그에 곧 더: SoultoSeoul.me 🌎💞🇰🇷 (at KCON 2016)

disabled people who are unable to work are just as valid and worthy as disabled people who can work

I know a lot of people who need to hear this…..

Yes. Disability should not define your worth. There is #ableism even amongst our own #ChronicLife & chronically ill communities. Please stop. We are all worthy of love, support, and comfort.

It seems silly to say I’ve been disgustingly sick for 12 days when I haven’t been “healthily normal” for over 5 years. As I struggled to breathe past my raspy cough and remove my sweater to prepare for my routine blood tribute a joyful gasp interrupts my brooding. “Heyyyyy Tiff, back so soon?!” It’s my favorite lab nurse. The one who always compliments my baldie and never destroys my veins. After deciding which arm will be less problematic she paused to ask me if I was ready to selfie….my days had become a blur of snot nosed tissues drowning in eau de vaporub. I had forgotten how much #HospitalGlam strengthened me during my hardest , and here was my nurse going beyond the norm to remind me that my health doesn’t dictate my beauty, worth, or importance. I left that day forgetting my fear of needles and feeling loved. Today I encourage you to celebrate your beauty regardless of the challenges you face daily. Show me your beauty! 💃✨

There is SO much negative stigma, shame, and sadness surrounding the lives of those facing Chronic Illness. Each day we're faced with endless road bumps, hurdles, and disappointments. Disappointed in ourselves for a body that doesn't work the way it's supposed to. Frustrated by our appearance when our skin blisters, weight increases, and hair falls out. Suddenly we have to learn how to love this "new" self. It isn't easy but it's definitely possible. Each day I try to point out one good moment or quality about myself. Yesterday I was able to laugh with a friend through my pain. I told lupus to suck it! That counts as victory. 💪💜💪 Doesn't matter if you're at the Doctor. So strike a pose, VOGUE! 💃 #HospitalGlam

#HospitalGlam Selfie because I may look good on the outside but inside my organs are fighting to survive while being attacked by my overactive immune system. The result is chronic pain throughout my entire body. THIS is the reality of most people living with #Lupus and many other chronic illnesses. We don't want or need your pity. We'd actually appreciate your attempt to understand our condition. #Empathy when we're having a rough time. #Compassion when we have to reschedule/cancel plans. #Thoughtfulness for providing meals, house cleaning, travel, etc when our bodies can't function normally. And most importantly #Encouragement, because it gets difficult to look forward when you're struggling to live with an incurable illness so a little extra sparkle from our loved ones really keeps us going. ♡ #LupusChat #ChronicLife #LupusWarrior #survivor
