In Bilbo's defense, I, too, would have been quite upset if a person I just met invited 13 strangers to my house without telling me, and they all started rearranging my house while eating literally every speck of food I have in my kitchen, then came up with a song on the fly poking fun at me and how strict I'm being.
Hey so I still see people utterly baffled by how religious fundies (still a majority in America and moreso its senate) react on certain issues so uhhh is it actually not common knowledge what the antichrist is all about? You guys know his defining characteristic is ending war, right? That he's foretold to unite the world under his leadership by preaching global peace and solving basically every single problem in the world? So you know when you try to talk to these people about equality and togetherness they literally believe that's what makes you an agent of the devil right???
im sorry what. so. ok im assuming they think that this is all like. to gain trust and then take over or something? because.
Yes, he's called the "antichrist" because he's an imposter Jesus and the majority of the world will love him when he ends all class divides and erases all borders, creating one world government with him at the top. That's the "new world order" they're terrified of. But they think he'll oppress true Christian believers who see through his ruse, which is why they're constantly looking for signs that they're being discriminated against and panic when they lose any control over government. This is why they fear diversity, immigration, socialized anything, even the less religious right are pretty clearly still running on the same logic; they might drop some of the spiritual lore but this is where they get the idea that all progressivism leads to the "real" fascism.
Y’all remember the Left Behind books?
That.
Not trying to start a fight here, but asking an honest question: is it really true that Christian fundamentalists form a majority of the population of the USA? I have heard otherwise in passing but I didn’t go tracking down the statistics for myself so I really don’t know.
@allsortsoflicorice I don't have the stats on me but from what I understand it's not the majority but more like the people in charge of zoning in a lot of areas which leads to much gerrymandering to stay in power. For example, every time Texas gets close to becoming a blue state the fundies in charge take action to suppress that.
The hell does that work?
The hell does that work?
Josh Duggar says he’s sorry. So what?
Josh Duggar is doing damage control. He can’t stop the truth that he’s a serial child molester from getting out, the police reports made sure of that.
What he can do is change the focus.
Josh doesn’t want you talking about his victims, he doesn’t want you focusing on the five prepubescent children he molested. No, he wants you to talk about how sorry he is.
Don’t let him change the focus. Josh Duggar’s apology is not the story. Josh can apologize until he’s blue in the face, but that’s never going to undo the trauma that he put his victims through.
Josh, and Jim Bob and Michelle alongside him, have shifted the burden onto the victims, painting Josh as a child who made mistakes, apologized and should be forgiven. They’ve tried to shift the narrative so that it’s just a short hop to viewing Josh as the victim.
This isn’t penitence, it’s not repentance, it’s what child molesters do. Rewrite the narrative so that in the end the audience feels sorry for them and forgets about their victims.

Gaslit
(I wrote this on 3/6/2015, inspired by my own experiences of manipulation and the 1944 film "Gaslight" - the quote at the bottom is from the heroine's victory speech over her oppressor) You found me in a pure radiant glow Like a gnat entranced by fire At first your attraction was flattering But then flickers of questions surrounded With shadows of doubt casting uncertainty My resources faded like oil being drained From burning both ends of the candle I was wasting away Becoming a remnant of embers alone A wind stirred up my strength And reminded me of what's true My sanity was not a game to play with you I saw the choices left to make To stand in the light or Cower in the shade I stood up tall and you cringed in my silhouette You may have dimmed my mind briefly But my soul shines brighter through it "If I were not mad, I could have helped you. Whatever you had done, I could have pitied and protected you. But because I am mad, I hate you. Because I am mad, I have betrayed you. And because I'm mad, I'm rejoicing in my heart, without a shred of pity, without a shred of regret, watching you go with glory in my heart!"
full circle... by Kirsty Mitchell I took this, the night I wrote this................‘Tonight the rain won’t stop falling…. I sit here in the dark…. and you are with me, I feel you beside me….. This room … this empty room, is full of you. Sheets creased, skin damp My face washed away…. this is raw. Broken light, bleeds against the glass. I am still…….In this silence, You are still in my thoughts….. Electric haze fades through me. Reflections, blur cold under my touch.. This heart beats slower… this night grows longer, These drugs don’t work……. I watch the shadows of strangers pace from room to room, TV’s flash and jump, burning blue. 17 floors high, this cityscape echo’s with memories of you. This girl is drowning…. this rain won’t stop…. This isn’t where I want to be…..so far away from you……’
A new book about purity culture shows the difficulty of reconciling women’s liberation with evangelical faith.
The Atlantic wrote all about Damaged Goods and the tension between reconciling feminism and Christianity.

Last year I posted these pictures from backstage at WDW Costuming individually, but thought it would be good to have them all in one post. Enjoy!
Keep it up, Disney

That IS great, but we’ve had a lot of this before. I wish people wouldn’t ignore the older movies, especially the classics, to praise the new ones-
Girls who had to work hard for something and succeeded:
Parental abuse:
Labels don’t define you:
Overcoming depression:
Learning to trust:
Diverse cast and shows science is exciting:
Probably far more than that, but that’s just a few off the top of my head.
Then there is Lilo and Sitch which covers:
-The value of family, as well as the message that you can make your own family and that family is as valuable as the one you are born with
-Overcoming labels slapped on you by others and that you can make your own path (Stitch is labeled a monster at the start and by the end, he has overcome some of his programming and is a productive member of society)
-Determination can lead to success
-Arguably overcoming depression, since Lilo does start off as a very sad little girl and gets better over the course of the movie
-The main cast is non white, either Hawaiian or Samoan
-Accepting the differences in others (the humans and aliens grow to work together)
-There is not a big romantic plot at all, since the movie is more focused on the bonds and love of a family.
lilo and stitch is just the best movie ever
Let’s not forget Pleakley dressed as a woman and no one said anything. He was accepted for who he was
